Another vote for Adium. Adium looks good and is very customisable.

Yeah. If you tweak your settings to the way you like it, Adium is great. MUCH more customizable than iChat.

For those who prefer iChat over Adium, you can pretty much customize Adium to have the same exact look as iChat.. except for the brushed metal on the actual contact list..

They also have a script to have your iTunes track as your status message somewhere on their site if that's what you're looking to have...

Downfalls for adium though are the file transfers, which I don't use enough to care about. For that I use iChat. Same with the audio/video chat, which I don't care about...

Also, I can't believe no one has said this, but the hover over on the contact list... when you hover your mouse over a buddy's name... The overall layout of that is SO much nicer than iChats dinky little yellow box. This one actually provides you with online/idle time, buddy icon in a fuller view/animation, and an overall nicer look to it that's captured in a nice white box.

All in all, Adium > iChat...

I'll have to see what Leopard has to offer with it's upgrades in iChat.

adium is much better. I've tried to use ichat several times, but it's just miserably set up. It displays real names instead of screen names (your choice in adium), has no tabbed chatting, and generally just doesn't work as well or have as many options. Plus, that ducks is waaay better than the ichat icon.

The only thing Adium needs to be perfect is working file transfers.

Oh yeah, great point. I tried using ichat a few weeks ago and was so frustrated by how it wouldn't do that.

I prefer iChat

I don't like using instant messaging too much, so it's not something I use a lot. iChat is integrated well, and is practically unnoticeable when running in the background. Now with Jabber, you can have MSN, AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, and pretty much any other service running at once, under one account. And with GrowliChat, you know exactly what's going on.

Another vote for Adium.

It's just customizable...I can make it look however I want!

I can't wait until my file transfers work. For that I log into iChat.

C'mon 1.0!

Video chat

Just to confirm....

All my contacts are on MSN so I use Adium but obviously that means no video or audio chat. Is there anyway I can do video on MSN or not?

Actually, I use both. iChat for AIM chats and video chats, Adium for MSN and Yahoo chats. I am a big fan of both programs - I can't say I prefer one over the other.

her program is Fire been using that on my 12" powerbook. I just started using Adium and like it as well.

Any other IM clients. I use msn but im not to keen on adium so is there any alternatives

Nobody in this thread has mentioned Proteus. Proteus is free, and even when it cost money I bought it rather than use Adium. Since then, Adium has gotten better, but the last time I used it for a few days I again switched back to Proteus. Proteus just has a nicer (default) interface.

I haven't been having file transfer problems anymore with Adium. I think it had something to do with forwarding certain ports.

Another vote for Adium.

I use Adium, as i love tabs for it:p

And i think the title would be Adium....iChat...which is better?

As your only comparing 2 things, and best is used for 3 or more items;)

I use iChat because it's so tightly integrated with the OS, and I like working with integrated programs.

iChat

I'm all about iChat

I use it mostly for sending files ..and for that reason alone it rocks for me.

I've send gigs of info overnight while I sleep. Love it.

Also, my $$$ iSight would be just an ornament if I used Adium.

Someday I may take the time to "customize" Adium and make it all snazzy.

But for now, iChat "just works"

I am a big Adium fan. I got friends with MSN, Yahoo and AOL. I like that i can open 1 program and talk to them all.

i use adium, and i find that it integrates well into my system....its not constantly in your face like other clients, it keeps out of the way. ive styled it to look a bit like iPhoto edit tool boxes, and ive changed the icon to an AIM man, which flashes orange when someone messages me. i have done this because no one knows what the duck means, and this symbol is recognised easily. i have kept the iChat soundset, as it is also non-obtrusive.

very good IMO, but file transfers between my mac and my PC using friends over a 10MBPS connection are woefully slow for no apparent reason. can anyone explain this phenomenon?

S

You have a 10mbps UPLOAD speed?

Who is your ISP?

iChat is ok, My Adium keeps crashing if im idle for more that 12 hours

I enjoy the integrationof ichat with os x.Adium is nice but still has some flukes to fit. I think it would be dope if aple made a universal ichat like ichat uv? heh:p

No need to choose one. I use both on a regular basis. Adium for regular chatting and iChat for Audio/Video. And since I only use the menu bar icon with iChat it is really unobstrusive.

I believe that is a local Ethernet connection, not an Internet connection. No need to worry.

I get random disconnects on both iChat and Adium, as well as other chat programs I use (for IRC, for example). I have no idea why.

I have used both iChat and Adium for an extended period of time and I have to say I like them both quite a bit.

This doesn't speak to any of the weaknesses of Adium, but the reason I ended up sticking with iChat was because I spent so much time customizing Adium.

What I like about iChat is that, like most of Apple's software offerings, it just works, and is nice and simple. That sort of quality is what has me using Camino over Safari right now. I think Adium is more the FireFox of chat programs.

Either way I think they are both good. I just like simplicity at the end of the day.

I use iChat with Chax. It's nice. The biggest quams I had with adium is the lack of AV and Direct Connect being a goob. I use Chax for the log viewer and the IMing people with multiple aliases.

Another vote for Adium. We should get a poll up for this question. But if I need file transfer, I switch to iChat for a few minutes.

My buddy list is way awesomer in Adium than iChat.
