I can't see how this guy'll be a good fit at Apple. Flash has jumped in early with new technologies, spawned industries, then abandoned them for the next big thing. Web and TV animation! Nope, not interesting enough, we have to make online ads. No, wait, Video and music players! No, programming! Wait, Games!

In the end, you get this bizarre tool which can do all those things, but sucks in comparison to all the competitors who chose to focus in those areas it left behind.

Bring Flash back! Ok maybe without the CPU hogging video component-but why get rid of the rest? One of the BEST interactive software programs ever written that used vector scalable images with layers and multimedia functionality-is there yet an HTML5 interface that can really compete with what Flash did? Not yet-why not? They are trying but not there yet-please get with it programmers and make something designers can use- not just programmers- for simple interactivity. Make it better than Flash! We are waiting.

Exactly! Flash is great for animations and all kinds of interactive stuff that's more than transitions and changing the color of a button when you press it. If it ran just fine 10 years ago on a PC at that time, why can't it run fine on a current iPhone? Surely a phone today has more processing power than a 10 year old PC? Anyway, it's not like Flash should be all over the internet, but for some things it's irreplaceable.

Yup. It could mean Apple is finally taking the high end market seriously again...

...or we're gonna soon see Final Cut iOS.

Not necessarily a bad thing. Jobs said that PCs were going away. Within a decade I expect we'll see iOS like devices replace pro set ups in addition to casual set ups... The only thing that traditional computers will do anymore is act as servers.

This means we'll need all those pro apps and IDEs etc. on iOS.

Although maybe not. For all its intuitiveness, IDK if a touch screen will ever be able to manipulate content as quickly as a pro with a keyboard.

Well crap. There goes the neighborhood.

Yep, given how ***** the Adobe installers are especially in large installations like universities where you are trying to manage hundreds of seats at a time.

I suspect he wont last long as he may not 'fit' with the way apple does things, its happened before.

Hopefully we will be seeing Apple's take on Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. We just need someone to do it in the hope that Adobe prices come down to something more reasonable. They have no serious opposition at the moment, and as we all know, competition improves the breed and brings down prices.

Pixelmator, Omnigraffle. Two serious competitors at far better prices.

Because Flash from 10 years ago did far less than Flash of today.

Adobe's software is known to become unnecessarily bloated over time. Bloat is a serious problem of lazy/uninformed programmers. Flash became the cancer of the web when ads started using it. Apple's resistence to support Flash was a GOOD thing for everyone. Yah, there was a painful transition for some, but the world eventually did move on.

For iOS devices to take over PCs in Pro environments your going to need them to attach to large monitors and also outside of the walled garden ( or relaxed ) in many cases - for example - software development.

Taking over Aperture, etc?

Is he going to be over Aperture, Final Cut, Logic Pro, etc? That'd be kinda cool. A friend who used to work for him says he's the only good guy at MM

Nope. It's not a bad thing at all, and I see it eventually happening as well. Though the transition should be something we allow to happen naturally over time, rather than forcing the change now while the hardware isn't anywhere nearly capable of handling the software.

I have no idea what this means for Apple or Adobe, but Shantanu Narayen has to be one of the coolest names around. It could fit in Orson Scott Cards Ender's series seemlessly. Seriously cool name.

An alternative to Creative Suite is greatly needed. Adobe apps have great tecnological content, but are hostile to the Mac work environment: sluggish, with an alien user interface, foolishly expensive. I hope this is a sign of competition arising.

Wow. It's kinda sad that the first thing you people think of when you hear about Adobe is Flash.

Well the first thing I think about is Photoshop which I use a lot. Speaking of Photoshop, whats the deal with your avatar? The image is so low rez I can't even tell what it is. It's either a Turkey leg, a Boxing glove, or a bleeding heart with an arrow through it. Is there a reason behind this madness? :)

I believe it is a Minecraft thing.

We've been promised a new MacPro this year, let's hope that Lynch coming in is part of an overall reinvestment by Apple in their Pro users. Hopefully the herd of Final Cut Pro users that jumped ship or, like me, are holding out as long as possible to buy new hardware, made them realize they need someone that is connected to the needs of pro market.

I think that there have been some nice enhancements to Adobe's software during his watch. If I were Apple I'd get this guy out to every trade show and start talking to real pro users about their needs, not the needs of the soccer dad that wants something better than iMovie to edit, or the rich kid that just bought a DSLR and wants to feel more pro than iPhoto.

Thing bigger.

It's almost too predictable that so many think of flash. C'mon. Think bigger. The former CTO of Adobe did... and he left.

There's actually been one person on here who's guessed what it is. You've come pretty close with the turkey leg, but...nope...

...it's the secret wall chicken sprite from the old 8-bit Castlevania games.

Awesome.... now that we have an Adobe tech exec in there we can REALLY see the bloatware at Apple.

Please keep him away from anything memory-management oriented.... Adobe has never figured that one out.
