Looks like there's no point downloading this for users who don't have the 9400m, 320M or 330M? Are there any improvements on other Mac systems with graphics cards not on that list?

It's a preview release and I expect that support for more GPUs will come later. Personally I want HD4870 support :)

HD 4850 here! You're right though, support will probably come. Was just trying to read into their description and see if there's even a point in me installing this--which I don't think there is

No, I don't believe that there is any reason to install this if you don't have a supported card. As Adobe mentions, the target audience is developers for testing existing content, not end users.

Make sure your flash version is 10.1.d81, or you're not using the right plugin. If you had other 10.1 before, make sure you uninstall it first, otherwise the Gala won't be running.

Watching the last airbender trailer in 1080p at youtube uses about 40% on each core whether windowed or full screened, on my 2Ghz Alubook hooked up to my 26" 1920x1200 monitor. I couldn't play it without stuttering before.
Finally decent flash performance without running the fans like crazy at 100% on a mac.

Finally my CPU is lightly used by Flash. First time in ages (ever since I moved to Mac) I don't hear the fan go WWWWWHHHHHHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR when I started using Youtube.

In order words, Apple only had itself to blame for poor flash performance all along.

Go figure.

What??? You thought Jobs was telling the truth? This is the same guy that let Apple slip to they the current desktop market share the own today. History is repeating itself with mobile phones with Android being the Windows... and Apple... well... being Apple.

Really? Can you give us rough CPU usage comparisons before and after the beta?

I'm considering getting on of the new MBP 13's to replace my aging Macbook, and one of my biggest beefs is with the flash performance.

I could give you a rough usage of before/after

Before: 34-50% CPU was idle while doing Flash in background, if I watched the video, that number decreased to 20-30%. Result: CPU increased temperatures to 80*C and thus fan kicked up to 5400rpm.

After: CPU barely hits 60% idle. (Which is good, higher idling, better). Temperatures increased to 74*C, but not enough to kick the fan higher than 3200rpm.

so what?!

Does adobe get a pass on older systems? This fix is not going to work for any of the five macs that I have... When are they going to just plain ol' fix flash?

I usually don't have issues with well made flash pages (other than typical flash is stupid issues... load screens? come on people) I have serious issues with all these poorly made flash ads (and the system to deliver them) that locks up safari for up to ten minutes at a time. This is why i love the app store (and apple making hardware ad software) and why a free-for-all environment leads to issues.

This new update is for Macs with the nVidia 9400M, 9600M GT, 320M and 330M GT GPUs. Any other Macs are not supported.

AFAIK, the 9600M GT isn't supported. Dumbass move to be honest. It you have a MBP, you need to switch to the lower 9400M just to get hardware playback.
That's actually Apple's fault, the only GPU's Apple has written GPU acceleration drivers for were the three listed above.

"QuickTime H.264 hardware acceleration
requires a Mac with an NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, GeForce 320M, or GeForce GT 330M graphics processor."
