UPDATE: The final release of Mac OS X Lion (10.7) provides the same support for Flash hardware video acceleration as Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6). The previous “Known Issue” suggesting that video hardware acceleration was disabled in Lion was incorrect and based on tests with a pre-release version of Mac OS X Lion that related to only one particular Mac GPU configuration. We continue to work closely with Apple to provide Flash Player users with a high quality experience on Mac computers.
Apparently.

ditch flash once and for all

download youtube5 2.2.5 by Connor Mckay. It's a safari extension that will play the html5 version (up to 1080p) of any youtube video, embedded or not. Say good-bye to flash and you'll be glad you did. I use chrome if I absolutely need to use flash (which is rarely). I got this tip from Jon Gruber.

and for this reason I'll be stating with Snow Leopard for the forseeable future.

Aus $32 for Lion

Aus $1000+ for CS5

Adobe really don't like Apple, and I suspect the feeling's mutual, and we punters are the ones who either suffer or pay up

it sucks :(

'A lack of Rosetta support in OS X Lion means that some older Adobe software such as CS2 or earlier will not run on the new operating system.'

so my original post was to do with this press release and what I meant was that rather than upgrade Adobe software to the tune of $1000 I'll just not upgrade the OS (at a cost of $32) - unless of course I can find a cheap version of CS3 which will run in Lion in which case I will update the OS

Wow big shock *not*, so yesterday me and a few developers claimed hardware support still works on Lion with flash 10.2/10.3/11 and posted results. Turns out to be true and we are not crazy. This does show how very confused and weird adobe works at times. Maybe just maybe they will now also fix the settings bug that i posted a workaround for :).

Daniel.

Nope, not you.

I didn't see a lot of anti-Apple folk in this thread. I saw a couple of anti-adobe guys though. :(

The fact is, no one had any information to base anti kind of bashing on. And now, we know the facts, no bashing was warranted at all. Especially the "Adobe didn't test on the betas ?" bashing since obviously they did from the update.

I'm not anti-Adobe. Just hate flash. Even 1080p flash looks like crap.

For the end result quality vs. cpu use h.264 is far more efficient. h.264 is so good that I can get away with ripping all my animation DVD's to 700kbps and it looks perfect. I find with animation though you can get away with about half the bitrate or less and it looks great. Standard video I do around 1500-2000kbps.

Flash video takes about 40-60% CPU on my MacBook vs. 12-27% for h.264 ranging from 480 - 1080 res.

Any normal person would use h.264 inside flash too 100% killing your argument. Maybe just maybe not for lowres but at 1080p i bet you 99% of 'flash' video is intact h.264 inside flash.

Daniel.

I understand that completely.

Why do we need a flash wrapper in the first place? Better to leave as QT h.264 and use less CPU.

Edit:

To add to this I would say flash degrades the playback even on occasions where it doesn't worsen it. It doesn't deal with scrubbing anywhere near as well and can often put the audio out of sync. It's like taking a perfectly good video and putting a layer of horrible over the top.

Because QT sucks as a wrapper just as bad as flash does. Like all of the rest of Apple's software, Quicktime has always sucked for Windows PCs.

The flash wrapper overlay ads. As far as I know that is the main reason for still using flash (well that and the penetration of browsers that can play HTML5 natively is still fairly low).

Lover vs Haters

nice discussion you have here, looks like apple lovers forget they are so minor group of users, that they don't even interest adobe as flash consumers

btw you know why internet needs flash as wrapper ? because you can put advertising in it, so when somebody turn off the advertising it also turns off the video ... does anything else have same feature (i mean with penetration as flash player has) ... and yes, we need advertising to have free video sharing on internet

and there is also the "i just hate flash" dude :D it's like to hate cars in city without public transportation, i understand that you (apple lovers) do not need flash, of course you don't you are specific group of people, where ninety percent of you is just blindfolded (you can't see what others can) and the ten percent of you (geeky developers flashing all over the world the shining apple), who just hate the technology because steve hates it

will the cold war between flash and apple ever end?

will the cold war between blu ray and apple ever end?

can we have one day where we can have flash and blu ray as standard for apple?

- OS X Lion's new reverse scrolling may throw off some users, not just in Adobe's applications but across the entire experience. Reverse scrolling can be disabled in System Preferences.
Worst. Feature. Ever.

I do not (entirely) agree on this one. I've finally managed to get use to it:eek:

- With OS X Lion now hiding the user Library folder by default, users may need to use Finder's "Go to Folder" command to access preferences and other user settings for Adobe applications. Alternatively, users can use the command line to make the Library folder permanently visible.

This is the *worst* "feature" IMO.

Why do users need to be able to see ~/Library?

You're probably right. Most users don't *need* to see the ~/Library (or /Library, for that matter), but I often do. (That's why I said that was the worst feature in *my* opinion:)

Plus, a lot of non-savvy Mac users I know never messed with it either... So I'm just wandering what are the real benefits here.

Anyway, it's not like it's such a big deal to find those folders. I just got to get use to it.

Why do users need to be able to see ~/Library?

I go into my library at least a couple times a week. Only the most pure consumer user that used everything in it's default way would never have a reason to go into it.

You question tells me that might me you.

hehe, nope not me, my wife sure, but not me... But then again I am more comfortable messing with the system using Terminal.app (where there are no arbitrarily hidden files or folders outside the .stuff)

I've also managed to get used to the 'natural scrolling' after initially shunning it.

That library hiding is easily solved, and most general users won't notice it or care about it.
