The point I am trying to make here is that Mini is terribly overpriced. I think 250 would have been a good price for it.]
An even better price would have been $79.

The mini costs more to make than the $249 tablets, and those are being sold in the best circumstances at break-even. There is no way that Apple would take a loss on the mini just to steal a few sales from other companies.

Nope. It's HD. Not Half/True/Full HD but still considered HD. It all depends which industry and definition you want to go for. It would be nice if all the TV makers can stop selling their 1024x768 plasmas as HD.
That's different. Plasma TVs with that resolution use non-square pixels to display the 720 lines without distortion. Not possible on LCDs. The iPad mini is not an HD display.
1) It does not even have a HD screen whereas kindle and other have a hd screen
Doesn't really make a huge difference. Furthermore, it's basically moot with the encoding of streaming video. You'll get roughly the same video size thanks to the bigger screen. If you watch a lot of movies, compare for yourself and see if you prefer one over the other. The real difference is text, but that is hard to compare since the fonts and sizes are different between Android and iOS, and even between the Kindle and regular Jelly Bean.
3) Compared to kindle speakers are crappy.
Based on what?

1. App Store
2. I love the support that Apple offers. I love that if something goes wrong with my device that I can make an appointment and get help face to face with somebody. The Apple Store employees have always been nothing but helpful and I love that about Apple. I have never experienced that with any other company.
3. iOS

I didn't care about the retina screen or any of those other things when I made my decision. I am big on apps and you can't find a better app store than Apple's. That was the main point for me.

Whats the real advantage of choosing ipad mini over any other smaller tablets, apart from the apple logo.

1) It does not even have a HD screen whereas kindle and other have a hd screen
2) Price is a good 130-140 more.
3) Compared to kindle speakers are crappy.

I am trying to understand why people are crazy about the ipad mini when its not even close to being the best product. I understand that the ipad is the best in the market.

Well for me personally, I have an original Kindle Fire purchased by my son just 10 months ago as a gift for me. Thing is, if you check out the software updates for their Kindle products, all the newer products got updates... we original KF owners didn't.

According to the discussion forum, the original KF was left out totally, and after several people contacted CS it appears they have no idea when or if we'll ever get updates. Hopefully they will do the right thing eventually, but it doesn't inspire me to buy another one of their products. I realize all support comes to an end eventually, however a 10 month old device should not be left out of software updates.

I love my iPad, the apps, and I do believe I can count on Apple to support this device for at least 2 or 3 yrs. I wish I could say the same about my KF. So even though the Mini might not be the best spec wise, it is likely a solid device and Apple will stand behind it.

Anyway I hope that helps you to understand why I bought a Mini this time around.

All valid points. I have preordered a ipad 4 as i thought it was more value for my money. And I just love the apps on my iphone and its integration with my entire apple ecosystem. (imac + apple tv + iphone 4)

I agree about the quality of product in general. I still feel that ipad mini is overpriced.

You know this thread reminds me of when someone comes to look at the brand of vehicle I sell.

I hear, "So the (fill in the blank) has features X,Y,Z and is thousands less and looks better"

So I have to ask myself, why are you even here? To somehow justify your purchase of the other brand?

It probably is, but not so overpriced that it shouldn't be considered. My KF made me love the 7 inch form factor and even when I got it I was hoping Apple would create the Mini. The iPad 4 is going to be great product but then I already have an iPad 3. As much as I love the 3 it is a bit heavy for someone like me (arthritis in my hands) that I ordered the Mini for the weight factor mainly. I think you will get a variety of answers as to why we want this device. The 4 is going to be a great product, I'm sure you'll get many years of enjoyment out of it.

For me, it's portability. Not heavy as a 1st generation of which I had. I did not upgrade to the ipad 2 or 3 or New.

I want to carry it in my purse.
I had a Nook.. It's slow.
I had a kindle fire. Just didn't like the bulk.
I had a Glaxay tab, I thought i was done and found out it doesn't have a print capability. It was cool. Flat, slim great screen, but if i'm in the bed and want to print something, you couldn't do it. So, back it went.

i'm coming back home to my apple as I have 3 other products and I think my husband has mac mini, Mac air, Iphone, apple tv. Why not have them all talk to each other. ?

it really helps me with having same calendars sync so when I'm out I don't come home and find out I've over booked myself.

This isn't meant to be a slam against Apple (because I love Apple), but the reason people pay a premium for their products has nothing to do with logic. It's never about numbers, specs, or processors. It has everything to do with how you feel using the product. And no one, bar none, does that better than Apple. It's completely about the user experience. How I feel when I open my MacBook Air, how I feel when I grab my iOS device to do something...it's difficult to put into words. In that regard, it is kind of like religion: it defies logic, but makes some people feel good.

Yes, I use a Dell laptop for work, and my work-provided Galaxy S3 out-specs my iPhone 5. But, in the end, I am stuck using Windows and Android. There is zero emotional attachment to these devices. It's just the way it is for a lot of us.

Advantage of iPad mini?

Smaller size and same support of ios apps. Already will fit in my Canada Goose winter jacket ( roughly same size of blue ray disc case ) I had a iPad 2 for short period of time but it was to large to carry with me daily.

I normally walk instead of taking my car. Right now always have iPhone 3 GS on me to check email + internet via wifi but screen too small.

For those who have a lot of ios apps will choose any iPad over Android tablets & even Microsoft tablets using Windows 8 RT because they do not want to have to look for replacement apps and not have the same interface experience they have now.

It is the apple apps that make the iPad so popular. In the audiophile area all the companies have ios apps McIntosh, Naim, Bryston, Pioneer, Denon , Yamaha etc ....

This x1000. Apple emphasizes user experience unlike any other computer manufacturer, and they have the resources to execute their ideas. That in and of itself is a huge advantage of the iPad mini over competing tablets.

And don't forget unparalleled customer support and a huge network of physical retail stores. I can say without reservation that shopping with Apple is the most hassle free experience of any retailers I've dealt with. Do you remember what it was like to buy electronics pre-Apple store? Hope you saved that receipt! And hope you live within driving distance of the store where you made the purchase! And god forbid something happens during the warranty period, have fun dealing with phone support! Meanwhile, I've purchased an iPad in the States, flown halfway across the world and had it replaced for no charge at an Apple store in a different country. Incredible service.

Same wordings as Amazon. I consider you as a possible marketing guy from some company. ;)

memory to memory the ipad is only $70 more than the nexus.... the 16GB nexxus is $249.

i have more than &70 invested in apple apps.....

Until tomorrow. 16gb is going to 199 price point and 32gb is going to 249 price point to match the Kindle Fire HD.

Makes the decision a little harder to be honest.

Only been here a few days, but I think that's legit. Never seen so much opposition to a new product.

I have. People raised an equally big stink about the iPod mini when it first came out. The first one had a 4 GB capacity, compared to the 10 GB iPod. However, the iPod mini was not that much cheaper than the regular iPod. People howled. There was much gnashing of teeth. And the iPod mini became a hit.

Well the Google event got delayed for now I think.. I am curious to see the specs of the Nexus 10 and such, but I think they cancelled the Monday event because of the storm.

Except the Google event for cancelled because of hurricane Sandy. They have not said what the new date will be.

Paying more for the Apple logo? I guess that's true, in a way. Apple products are all about delivering a complete, polished experience. Design, material and engineering, in every way. All at the highest level. Software and hardware, as a single package.

Well put. Plus, have you seen the competition? Their tablets are uuuuuugly. Not opinion, fact. Thick, fat, plastic and ugly. iPad mini is thin and perfect.

Weellllll,, I am pretty fond of my Nexus 7. The Mini looks nice, but the Nexus line is no slouch. I actually like the backing material. Much nicer to hold for extended periods.

The question is, does the Nexus run what you want it to run, and while the mini is priced much higher, I'd say that MisterDisney hit the nail on the head in providing a complete solution.

My red hot desire for the mini has cooled since ordering it last Friday but one of the things I'm looking forward to is the ability to read iBooks and kindle books on it.

If the complete package of the mini is lacking in any ways or that I feel I'm not getting value for my $$ then I'll return it but so far I'm still looking foreword to it and I'm anxious to get the shipping notification :)

By GB, the iPad mini is $70 more than the N7. $70 for a much larger screen, in a smaller/thinner package... $200 more With LTE. I like the Nexus, but the design of the iPad mini better suits my needs. (Thin bezels, non widescreen... ideal for reading)

I don't understand the "you can't watch movies on it good" argument. Do people really watch that many movies on tablets? I use my 42 inch 1080p LG + 5.1 for that :p

I'm on the same boat. I was only referring to the ugly comment. Hardware wise, the N7 is not an ugly device. The backing material is I think more comfortable to hold than an aluminum device. But that's what cases are there to resolve. I wouldn't pick a device just on that, although if I thought it was ugly I probably wouldn't buy it. I mean, it has to look good.... ;)

I have skimmed through this thread and thought I would share my thoughts. I've only recently become an Apple fan (about 2 years now), and I don't think i'm a fanboy or loyalist, but do appreciate their products. It's rare for a company to consistently provided a product or service that impresses me (Amazon is another).

The Fire HD and the Nexus 7 are very nice tablets and will continue to sell well despite the iPad mini. I can't speak for others, but I did not blindly buy the iPad mini. The $329 price is high, probably higher than it should be. Also spec wise, the Fire HD and Nexus 7 do match up well, if not better than, the iPad mini in several areas. However, the iPad mini is no slouch and one thing that the Fire HD and Nexus 7 can't compete with no matter how good their specs are, is the App library.

I sold my iPad 2 awhile back because I wanted a 7" tablet and have gone through several (HTC Flyer, Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD, and Nexus 7). The android market (including Amazon's market) has a decent amount of Apps, but still has less apps than the iOS market and more importantly has less quality apps. Even the apps that are both on iOS are android do not compare well (tapatalk is a good example, the iOS version is much nicer).

As I previously stated, the $329 price is too high, but I don't feel that Apple is trying to compete with the 7" tablets. If they had brought the iPad mini in at $249, I think we would all agree there would have been NO competition. I really felt Apple priced the iPad mini as another iPad option and not an android competitor. As far as they are concerned there are no other tablets and they are offering their $329, $399, and $499 tablets for you to choose from.

The reason I bought the iPad mini was because it's the iPad I have been wanting since I bought a launch day iPad 1. I probably would have still bought it at $399, not because I am an Apple worshipper, but this has been something I have wanted since Apple made modern tablets a reality.
