I am not sure what to do. Should I buy the current iPad Pro 12.9 or wait and see what Apple may do next with the iPad Pro?

The latest rumor says Apple may not come out with a new iPad Pro 12.9 until the second half of 2017. I don't want to wait that long.

But also if they come out with a new one in early march then I will regret buying the old one right now. What should I do?

I'm personally waiting for March/April to see if there are any announcements.

I say wait until then unless you really have to have it now. Then if nothing is announced in March/April you can decide if you can wait 6 more months or so, or buy the current version.

With as hard as they are getting to find at retailers other than Apple right now, I have to believe we will see an update soon.

Wait a couple of months, and there will be a second generation model. If you don't end up impressed by gen 2, the first gen will be available for a lower price. Win-win, as long as you can wait.

If there is a really good sale to be had i.e. $150 off or more, it may be worth it to buy (as opposed to waiting for the pro2 12.9).

The rumored upgrades - faster processor, TT display - aren't as big a deal as some may think.

I never buy the 1st gen of anything on principle.

I feel like these are troll posts. No offense intended. I can't fathom who would buy a year. Old device so close to a new release.
I can see this makes sense in the automobile market where buyers can get thousands of dollars in discounts before the new model year releases. Even so iPad Pros 12.9" are still full price right now or close to it.

Definitely wait please

It is not a troll post ... they could come out with a new iPad Pro 12.9" in March. Or they might wait to come out with one until Fall 2017. There are conflicting rumors. I don't want to wait until Fall 2017.

And if they change the form factor on the 12.9" iPad Pro then old third party cases etc may no longer fit and I would probably have to wait a period to order a good case.

Why do you think that the iPad pro will get a new model in March?

Just wait until March. No news then, get the current one, find a discounted one, or buy refurbished, or look at the used market for a deal.

Here's a fun experiment that can help you decide....Try to find a new 12.9 iPad at any retailer besides Apple's website right now. The remaining supply left out there is almost non existent. Everyone is sold out. You have to ask yourself why. For me, it means a higher probability that we will see an end of March announcement and release of the next generation.

Best buy has them available both for shipping and store pickup. Why do people say that they are sold out?

It is very unlikely that they will wait until the fall, for multiple reasons:
  • The new iPads are rumored to use A10X chips, which would already be old news if the A11 had been introduced in the iPhone 8
  • They don't want to overshadow the iPhone 8 at all, which is rumored to be a massive overhaul
  • That would leave the 12.9" untouched for two full years
I would expect new iPads in March if I were you. Maybe April or May, if the delay rumors are true, but certainly not the fall.

It's funny that there is 'a renewed interest in the 12.9'.

By many accounts, it lagged behind the 9.7" iPads in sales. Whatever.

Regret buying the "old" one?

The 12.9" iPP is a very capable computing device... if your in the market for one.... make sure you find one discounted and don't pay full price.

As of now, the current 12.9" iPP is a awesome device.... I recently had cracked my iPP, which was very disappointing. So, I had to choose whether to fix it for 600 bucks or sell it. But then paying 600 bucks when a new iPP was on the horizon was a tough pill to swallow.

Luckily, I was able to sell it. And picked up rMBP w/tb to help fill the void of computing on the go. Definitely enjoying it, but when they announce a new iPP... I'll give it a considerable look.

Win-win, as long as you can wait.

This the key and hard for some tech obsessed fools.

I need one semi-now if thats a word due to a job change and feel this would make my day to day operations sooooo much easier with a 12.9

That said I can "suffer" for 3 months and do your idea of get new or older version heavily discounted.

Leaning on waiting unless something truly blows my mind used in price range.

You realize that automobiles cost more so the discounts seem larger but percentage wise they are close on all of sales I see now. If the same scenario happens as with the Macbook Pro then your advice is even more wrong.

You are looking at the most unpopular model.

Simple really iPad announcements have always been in the March to June launch/announcement date going back to the original iPad in April 2010. Current iPads have been delayed likely from not having enough A10X chips to fill 3 SKUs. That's a lot of chips and they are harder to make.

The next Keynote is scheduled for June 12 at the WWDC I have my tickets confirmed and I expect it to be a Huge Announcement and IMO simultaneous launch with a Next Day Avialabilty at Apple Stores.

Waiting til June sucks but it's worse buying a year old device to be out shined in 4 months.

It also Will NOT be Fall 2017. That is 100% All Media and Mindshare will be in the 10th Anniversary IPhone Pro.

There will be for sure announcements in March/April.They don't release ipad at WWDC in June

I live 10 miles from Manhattan and Best Buy's website says unavailable within a 250 mile radius.

That is not a good indicator for a variety of reasons. And it hasn't been true of Apple products for the last 2-3 years (at least).

We're at the beginning of a new year and past the holiday shopping season. Companies will soon be performing inventory audits (typically done in February) and they'll want to have REDUCED inventory on the books by then and so they don't keep a large inventory on hand during the 1st quarter of a year.

It is a good indicator when it happens across multiple sellers of the same product. Inventory is done at different times of year, depending on the company and on when they end their fiscal year. Some companies do inventory just once per fiscal year while others do it every quarter.

When you factor in other variables that have been mentioned above, it is enough to at least think that they will be announcing a new model soon.

Basing the likelihood of new products to be announced on third-party inventory is a pretty imprecise yard stick IYAM.

Because to give that credence means that Apple is telling them something (which the general public is not privy to) and we all know Apple likes to keep news under wraps whenever possible.

But you are free to believe what you want.
