I am not sure what to do. Should I buy the current iPad Pro 12.9 or wait and see what Apple may do next with the iPad Pro?

The latest rumor says Apple may not come out with a new iPad Pro 12.9 until the second half of 2017. I don't want to wait that long.

But also if they come out with a new one in early march then I will regret buying the old one right now. What should I do?

Just wait and see what features Apple will have for new iPad Pro and I will bet orginal iPad Pro will reduce price you could afford.

I feel like these are troll posts. No offense intended. I can't fathom who would buy a year. Old device so close to a new release.

If you are talking about paying full retail then i would agree with you. However, I happen to think it's stupid when anyone pays full retail for Apple's overpriced equipment. Getting a 12.9 now either second hand or refurbished will save the OP as much as several hundred dollars and the current 12.9 will not be "old" even when the new one comes out. You can look on almost any locations Craigslist and people can't give them away. New in box 128GB Wifi/Cellular models $600-$650. That's almost half of what Apple charges for the same machine.

That is not a good indicator for a variety of reasons. And it hasn't been true of Apple products for the last 2-3 years (at least).

We're at the beginning of a new year and past the holiday shopping season. Companies will soon be performing inventory audits (typically done in February) and they'll want to have REDUCED inventory on the books by then and so they don't keep a large inventory on hand during the 1st quarter of a year.
That's not the case here where we're in mid summer and about to start the new school year. It's when "back to school" offers are starting at many major retailers (and Apple usually starts their own back to school promotion at this time of year) so retailers are usually stocking up. There is no stock here though.

I don't like the idea that being sold out means a new product will launch soon (March). The Apple Watch Series 2 is sold out at most Target, Wal-Mart and Best Buy that I have been to. Doesn't mean a new device will launch soon. It could all be a matter of Financials and Inventory.

Practically speaking if Apple waits until the fall I believe (imo) that they will get totally slammed by the launch of Microsofts Surface Pro 5 that is pretty much guaranteed to launch March. If you look at the last couple quarters for both companies MS is making huge gains in this market. Just saying March is a really good idea for an Apple Launch, February if they could pull it off.

Does anyone else think there is a chance that they discontinue the 12.9 inch iPad Pro? Rumors seem to indicate that the new ipad is marginally bigger than the 9.7. Could they just be splitting the difference and only selling one?

Well, if the 12.9 gets refreshed, there's your answer.

The larger iPad was always less popular...I hesitate to call it a niche device, better to call it a speciality device.

Certainly, Apple has really done little with iOS to enhance the iPad experience with the Pro line so far, aside from giving us the pencil.

I doubt it. Apple has a way of making two options for a certain device to which neither are really ideal. The ipp 12.9 is too big and the 9.7 is too small. The 5.5 inch iPhone is too big and the 4.7 is too small. I think this would change if Apple would reduce bezels, and with the iPhone, design it to be more ergonomically friendly such as button placement, etc.

I guess in a perfect world we would have a 5-5.5 inch iPhone with small bezels and an 11.5 inch iPad pro with small bezels. But in reality, we just have to choose from the options given.

It seems like Apple really is innovating less these last two years.

Other than force-touch, I can't really think of anything else. Windows and Android seem to be garnering all the press.

VR seems poised to be one of the next exploding frontiers and nary a peep from Apple so far.

I agree, even if they put out a meh upgrade to the iPad pro without any real game changing features, the SP5 release will kill them.

I believe that are at a point where they really need to step up the game. Smaller bezels, force touch, options to resize or add icon rows on the 12.9, and a USB C option. I don't care what anyone says, they need to add support for a mouse/pointer. There is absolutely no way to work as efficiently on the iPad touching the screen as you can using a mouse or trackpad when doing work that requires a lot of screen touches. It's a slower process and it doubles the time it takes to work. Adding mouse support would not hurt the iPad process for those who prefer not to use a mouse, but it would be a game changer for the many people who long for a mouse option. Hell, make it Apple proprietary and force me to use an Apple mouse/touchpad, I wouldn't care. This one feature alone would change the game in competiting with the Surface line.

If they added USB C and mouse support, it would be game over for the Surface.

Yea it's pretty clear at this point that Apple is banking on people continuing to purchase their products based on the Apple logo. They have some nice products and most of them are still the best in the industry, but they can only ride the lack of innovation train for so long.

I really want to see some software overhaul moreso than the hardware of the Pro lineups. Especially for the 12.9

The real estate is really lacking any function or specific items for such a great display and I really wish Apple would recognize the potential with such a great device.

I know we will not see a special OS just for the 12.9 but added features to utilize the screen space, icons, and widgets would be fantastic.

I've always believed adding mouse support would usher in much better featured software.

If you are happy without a mouse and perform the basics thru touch gestures...fine. No one is taking that away...that is a mainstay with the tablet interface.

But those that added a mouse to the iPad and with the software apps updated (of course) could see some really spectacular change.

The precise movement the mouse gives the user...that's when a true convergence of the tablet and the desktop is possible and the tablet replacing the PC for many tasks really possible for the masses.

Some people are doing that already, but it is limited because the touch interface by itself is not enough.

Previous post was right, no one wants iPads, esp the large Pro. get one for half price on CL if in US. Crazy to spend retail on it imo. I just got a nice 9.7 cellular Pro for $350 used, with 8 month warranty left. They had a 12.9 cellular Pro for $600.
I think the update will keep the large size, but the 9.7 Pro will go away for a slightly larger screen on a supposedly more premium model to differentiate it from the Air 2.

I was at my local Sam's Club last night and they actually had a sign out saying that the 12.9" iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, Apple Watch series 2, and Apple TV4 are all on back order globally. Initially that leads me to believe we will see new iPad's soon, but the Apple TV4 and Apple Watch Series 2 also being back ordered is strange to me. I wouldn't expect updates to them until this fall at the earliest.

I am in trouble if they come out with a new ATV and Apple Watch. I bought two ATV's last month and an Apple Watch Series 2 this week.
