LOL! My son's almost 17 and he won't even ask. I've got to talk him into a new phone, when he needs one.

Planning on an iPhone for him next year, I've already started working on convincing him.

I wish it was that easy for me... :)

His sarcasm was bleeding.

Anyway, when I was 14, I had no need for a smartphone. Then again, they didn't really exist when I was 14. I don't think anyone that young needs to be that 'plugged in' all the time. It's unhealthy for all of us, and as impressionable as you are at 14, it would not be a wise choice.

Yeah, we get that you want one. You definitely don't need one though. Tough it out for a few more years and come that time you'll be able to readily afford it, and there will be an even better model out.

Not when you are 14. At the college leve I can totally see the benefits but in high school you don't buy the textbooks unless it's a private school. The textbooks are loaned out.

If you can afford something, don't get it. Having your parents feed you the unnecessary stuff with their own money is even worse but I guess you are only 14 and don't fully understand that yet. Buy it yourself and you'll feel so much better.

Textbooks are not loaned at the HS level, they are rented. I paid substantial textbook fees for both of my children through high school.

The school still has to buy all those (very expensive) books, and if they get 5 years out of a textbook before it's either out of date or too worn out to reuse they're lucky.

Lots of high schools are trying out iPads, not just colleges. Not only does it give the benefits of reducing the cost, weight, and bulk of textbooks - but it allows for more interactivity. E.g. quizzes can be done right on the iPad, multimedia content is available, hyperlinking, etc.
