A hour and a half is pretty good for a full DVD. I'm averaging a hour an episode of X-Files.

OK thanks everybody so 1.45 is good:). problem is it is all scrambled on both mac and ipad
any setting i should switch on? I selected Ipad setting on handbrake
thanks

Probably because it is not getting decrypted (copy-protection is not being bypassed).
Do you have VLC installed? If not, install it and re-rip your disc with HB, you should be fine now.
If you do have it installed and it gives you scrambled pictures... then I don't know. But in this case you could rip the disc first using MacTheRipper, and then convert using HB.

Tip: In HB, select one chapter of your DVD-disc and try, this way you won't have to wait another 1h45 to see if it worked. Once you can confirm everything works as planned, you can do the entire movie/disc.

DVDShrink and DVDFab can decode/decrypt virtually everything you throw at it.
I then take the decrypted files and put them through Handbrake.
DVDFab has a DVD to Mobile option but it costs extra. I just take the extra step.
