Have you formatted the SSD to Mac os extended (journaled) ?

Double-check that it's all connected properly. That means open up the bottom again, unplug the ribbon cables to the new SSD, and plug them back in carefully. Good luck.

In order for me to format it, it would have to pop up in disk utility right?

Just did that, and unfortunately it's still not popping up.
