You have to remember, you get what you pay for. You paid for a Dell and that is what you got. Some people are happy driving a VW instead of a Cadillac. :)

VWs kick Cadillac's. Still I get your point, even if the analogy is way off.;)

Not me. VW is Hitler's company (really). Cadillac was formed from the remnants of the Henry Ford Company when Henry Ford departed along with several of his key partners and the company was dissolved. Oh, wait, Ford was a Hitler sympathizer and supporter. OK, never mind, same difference. I wouldn't drive either. I'll stick with my Audi. Oh, wait, Audi is part of the Volkswagen Group. OK, screw it: Chevy then! :D

No winning (or losing) this argument. Might as well go back to your Audi.

According to Goodwin's law, I think you just killed this thread :D  (Thanks!)

Godwin's Law (also known as Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies) is an informal adage coined by Mike Godwin in 1990. The adage states: "As a Usenet discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1."

there is a tradition in many newsgroups and other Internet discussion forums that once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically "lost" whatever debate was in progress

Tesselator... you lose! :D :p

comparison shopping

I haven't done an apples to apples (ugh) comparison of workstations lately, but when I bought my '08 Pro, it was actually cheaper than similar hardware configs from Dell.

We bought a couple Xserves at work not too long ago, and they were several hundred dollars cheaper(!) than equivalent Dell or HP servers. (now granted those prices did include a Win2k3 Server license, take that out, the Dell and Xserve were about the same, HP a couple hundred more)

How does an '09 MP stack up against a Dell Workstation?

To give you my experience in the UK -

on the eight core (8 core Mac Pro vs Dell T7500) Dell were able to match the student discounted Apple price (i.e. about 16 to 17% below Apple retail). If the Mac Pro had six ram slots per processor like the Dell and almost all other workstations I personally would have gone with the Mac Pro (given that I'm a student).

For the four core (W3500 series Xeon) Dell was a lot cheaper, something like 40%, but this is partly because Dell sell the T3500 workstation which has a smaller case, only a 525W power supply etc whilst with the Mac Pro the single processor machines differ from the dual processor machines only on one daughter board. The Dell has six ram slots so buying 12GB of ram from Crucial is about £200. The Mac Pro has only four ram slots so if you want 12GB the cost goes up astronomically (4GB ram modules are still very expensive).

The above was for me as a private individual. Companies can get bigger discounts out of Dell but perhaps they can also get better discounts from Apple (I have no experience).

Comparing apple v dell is like comparing apples with oranges (see what I did there ;)). Anyhoo the end product on your monitor may be the same but alas if we're going to make analogies it's like me making spagbol and comparing it to one made by Gordon Ramsay. Me being dell of course and apple being Gordon!
