Once you realize what the native YouTube app is downloading, you'll realize it isn't slow nor does it suck. It actually downloads HD instead of HQ like the mobile YouTube does (which is why it loads faster). Do a comparison between the two apps and you'll see the difference.

What Apple needs to do is put a quality setting in the app.

That's not true. The mobile web page does HD when on wifi.

The app just sucks even on the fastest wifi.

Apple's maps app is driven by Google, but Apple is still responsible for the actual app itself, isn't it? I don't think they would bundle a 3rd party app with iOS.

I'm not sure, although we are losing Google Apps. The App itself is powered by Apple I think, but Google just supplies the Maps. Same could be for YouTube, Apple creates the App, just uses YouTube as its search engine. So it may just be Apple's responsibility.

I've been using the Safari app version for about a year now. The native app quality is terrible and it has to be the way Apple has it set to download video...

What I want to know is why the only complaints are about the video caching. The commenting and rating features suck too. Half the time I get a "YouTube not available" message when I try to comment. Half the time the comment doesn't post, regardless of no error message. No retry, lost comment, because the error message comes up after the screen changes. For the first few months of the app, I couldn't even log into it (though the google account merging crap had some added complications there). I prefer the GUI on the YouTube app over the web interface. Most web interfaces suck. Slow loading, unresponsive, poor design for small screens, etc.

This is the problem with bundled apps. There's no clear maintenance or ownership and you can't remove them if they suck. Stocks app? Why can't I delete that little turd? Game Center? Bah. Gotta stick these useless things in a group and forget about them.

Settings -> General -> Restrictions -> Disable Youtube.

Say goodbye to the problem.

the app really should have more functionality.

that being said, i don't often watch videos on my phone. if i do, it's usually just clicking a link and i watch a video once. and it works.

but yeah, i agree... there's really no reason the youtube app is missing so much functionality.

same goes for the camera app, the default weather app, etc. etc.

Look at most of Apple's preloaded apps. They haven't really been improved upon much. The only one I can think of that has seen many changes is maps. Everything else is as it was when first released, for the most part.

Given Apple's current feelings towards Google, I'm not expecting any updates at all. For those who were wondering, App store rules prevent Google from making their own app. (duplicates built in functions of OS)

Sucks to hurt the user experience (their loyal customers) out of spite.

There are many core iOS apps, which after four years, still suck.

Bingo.

We're only getting attachments in Mail after almost 5 years? And only for pictures? It's a joke.

iOS devotees would never let Android get away with something like this. They'd be the first to point out how slow Android was to upgrade or get a feature.

Eh, I wouldn't go that far. There are 87965283465283465283465 iOS v Android threads and I don't think I have ever really seen this mentioned, honestly.

I have a subscription list, I watch those vids mostly and never really have an issue with YouTube.

This used to be the case, but I am pretty sure it isn't any more. There are browsers, music players, email apps, etc etc, all of which duplicate the functionality of something built into the OS.
