I got lucky in that my first phone was in perfect condition. However, while scratches on a 200$ or more device may not bother some people, do you really think you should have to put up with that on something brand new that you paid alot of money for? If I order a brand new pair of shoes online and they come with scratches or marks on them, I'm sending them back. Same with anything that's supposed to be brand new. What's the difference between shoes you are going to wear and a phone you're going to use? Absolutely nothing. When I buy something brand new, it should come looking BRAND NEW.
Apple may have production problems with these phones, who knows, but I shouldn't have to just accept that if I don't want to.

This is exactly how I feel. I don't think you are being a perfectionist or overly picky if you expect a flawless product when purchased brand new. I don't care what the uses of said product will be when I open that box it should be 100% flawless.

Exactly, if you would send back an expensive dress, shoes, or watch etc with the same flaws, why would you get down on someone that would send back a phone? You should get what you pay for which is something new unless asked otherwise. Don't become complacent because then companies don't try to be the best that they can be.

Wow, I really hope they make improvements to the 5S so it doesn't have these quality issues. The iPhone 5's I played with in the Apple Store did look very beat up, moreso than my 15-month-old 4S that has been dropped dozens of times and blown out of my possession during Hurricane Sandy, it only has a few nicks around the edges, no screen scratches or anything else.

Is it just me or do people seem angry that someone has had multiple defective devices, I don't get it. Why should anyone be forced to accept a defective iPhone? As if it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

I love my iPhone5 and it is perfect since I took it out of the box on the first day it was launched in the US. I can sell you my Motorola Startac if you want to replace your iPhone. :D

You cough up $199 or $299 when buying it. The carrier buys the rest. I am perfectionist, yet, I don't let the most minute detail from allowing me to enjoy my device.

A small minuscule scratch was present in my 4S. Guess what? I let it be there and this device has been great for almost 2 years now.

I paid €900 for my 64GB iPhone 5. Bought it right from the Apple Store. I owned every iteration of the iPhone except the 3G and 4S, and always paid the full price it retails for. If Apple sells it for €900 in their store, it better be perfect.

I don't profess love blind for apple. Check again. I do however not fret for the tiniest scratch.

We all know Apple is so fussy over the look of their products, so you tell me how any scratch is acceptable out of the box on any of their products? If you accept a scratch out of the box, I truly feel sorry for you.

Finally, someone with a brain!!!

Yes people on here get very angry when people like me go through a dozen phones. It makes Apple look really bad and they're just really insecure. ;)

$849 for a mass produced consumer grade device.

I actually wish people like you would just return them for a refund the first time. Might make them cheaper for the rest of us in the long run.

I actually wish people like you wouldn't even waste your time posting nonsense! You go right ahead and accept the defects out of the box, I will not!

some people aren't blinded by their love towards Apple and actually want a first grade product and quality for which they paid their money.

Another person with a brain!!!

What's funny is that people on here love to defend the defects and problems. They think the iPhone 5 is the greatest phone on earth. It's actually been Apple's most problematic iPhone. But you all already know that.

For the people that are defending their atrocious QC, go right ahead, you WILL NOT convince me black is
white!

I also love how people think I paid $199 when I did choose to buy my phone outright without a contract. Wow, stupid, stupid people on here.

Call me stupid, perfectionist or whatever but I returned my 5 for my good ol 4s and guess what, not a thing wrong with the 5.

I beg to differ that the 5 is worlds ahead of the 4s. There were not that many big deal differences. 5 felt too cheap and toy like to me.

So flame me now but to the OP. We will keep on enjoying our beautiful 4s s:)

Yep. To me it was the awkward display. A longer 4" display is/was NOT practical. From the moment I got the 5 it just felt like a huge downgrade from the 4S. Glad to know I'm not alone.

No you are not alone and I do not see why it is such a big issue to like our 4s over the 5. Now people, this is ONLY my opinion but I completely agree with Matt and many others I have spoken to that QC at Apple went way down with the crap ( my opinion) 5

Step 1: Get clearly defective new product.
Step 2: Claim old product is better because it is immune to defects and you're not unlucky the new product is just bad!
Step 3: Prove you have an IQ in the single digits.

Why do people have to insult others for their opinions? Here is my insult back at ya....Are you 3 yrs old? 4s is better built period.

My 5 came to me undamaged. I sent it back anyway cause it sucked compared to my 4s. So I guess I have a low IQ? Ummmm...okay

You just made me laugh!!! Haha.

For the record, I had my issues with the 4S, trust me. It is by no means perfect, but the 5, IMO is way worse as far as QC goes.

Learn a thing or two before you post next time.

Well, you'll not get any sympathy here, that's for sure. The list of defects you mention are some of the reasons why I purchased a 4S instead of the 5. Add 'bends too easily' to the list. That extra row of icons was not a selling point to me, and with a lighter, thinner, weaker shell that is now taller and more prone to bending and screen pops and poor finish, no thanks.

So you got a couple of lemons. That doesn't mean everything is a lemon. Quality control is just fine. No one can get 100% yield rates and zero defects. It's not possible. What's also not possible is your IQ not being below average for not knowing this simple fact. To prove my point, out of all the humans in the world with average IQs, we get a few people like you who obviously are below that.

Anyone who kids themselves that aluminum is weaker than glass is pretty stupid. And no, it won't bend if you put it in your back pocket. That's just BS.

5 felt too cheap and toy like to me.

I had the same reaction for about a week when I got my 5. It felt too light and fragile... but after a week it feels fine and my old 4 feels like a brick... way too heavy and thick. Give it some time.

Mine might have a scratch or two on the body; I wouldn't know, since I put a case on it right away. I don't really care. I don't have any of the other problems.

And are people actually saying that the slightly bigger screen is a problem? It's not like it's huge or anything. I like the new screen.

That's right. I want my iPhone 4S back!!! I absolutely hate, hate my iPhone 5. It's a piece of crap!!! The screen just started creaking. That's the straw that broke the camel's back!!!

Original launch day iPhone 5: excessive camera rattling, Apple Genius said it seemed like something was obviously loose.

November iPhone 5: scratched bezel by power button

3rd iphone 5: defective home button

4th iPhone 5: dust in camera

5th iPhone: another home button issue. The home button rotated a few degrees.

6th iPhone: more dust in camera. Affecting photos now.

Current iPhone: screen is creaking!!!

So yeah I've had it. I hate this phone. The 4S had the perfect screen, perfect design, perfect feel. Oh and it actually got me the best reception. Apple went down hill drastically with the iPhone 5. It's way too thin and way too light.

I actually want my iphone to have some weight and feel to it!!!

Fortunately I am a unique situation with Apple Customer Relations Administration. They are currently in the process of downgrading me to a 4s as long as I send my iPhone 5 back.

Praying Apple redesigns the iPhone this summer with a NON-AWKWARD display. Hope they actually make a quality product again. I had my issues with the 4s, but nothing like the iphone 5!

god damn, thats some tough luck for you! Ive only had to get a new phone once. the volume button stopped working on my 5. now i have this replacement..but i dont know if its refurbished or not. oh well! good luck on your next phone!

I sure hope OP has never bought any lottery tickets with that luck.

Either that or maybe standards are too high.

Received mine with minorish scratches on the bezel and I don't complain, I like it actually. Now, if the camera had problems or the screen cracked, that I can simpathyze.

Hilarious! I wonder what's going to happen if you found a scratch on your brand new car.

I've owned all iPhones since the 3G, and they can all take a licking.
iPhone 4S best quality build and reception. I still miss it lol.
I dropped my black iPhone 5 a distance of 6" and it now has a nick and discoloured bezel. I did change it once because the launch day phone had too many nicks and scratches out of the box. iPhone 4 and 4S was dropped on concrete and tile floors a few times and not a scratch.

I really like my 5's speed and screen, but when it comes to build quality and durability you can't beat the 4S. I hope that Apple goes back to more durable materials in the future.
