I agree, the OP seems a little too OCD. I have my launch day iP5, sure it had a minor scratch on the top of the bezel, barely noticeable..has a couple more now. My iP4s bezel took some good nicks and scratches as well...these things are durable not indestructible...most people just don't care if their phone has a minor nick or scratch, or if the home button is alignment is off an mm, or whatever.

So you got a couple of lemons. That doesn't mean everything is a lemon. Quality control is just fine. No one can get 100% yield rates and zero defects. It's not possible. What's also not possible is your IQ not being below average for not knowing this simple fact. To prove my point, out of all the humans in the world with average IQs, we get a few people like you who obviously are below that.

Anyone who kids themselves that aluminum is weaker than glass is pretty stupid. And no, it won't bend if you put it in your back pocket. That's just BS.

QC IS NOT FINE!!! I only hope that by me returning all these phones causes them to evaluate QC. I hope I made a small dent.

I had the same reaction for about a week when I got my 5. It felt too light and fragile... but after a week it feels fine and my old 4 feels like a brick... way too heavy and thick. Give it some time.

Mine might have a scratch or two on the body; I wouldn't know, since I put a case on it right away. I don't really care. I don't have any of the other problems.

And are people actually saying that the slightly bigger screen is a problem? It's not like it's huge or anything. I like the new screen.

I used the iPhone 5 for 5 months straight. Absolutely hate the form factor and how cheap it feels. 4S feels much, much better. An extra row of icons looks bad if you ask me, but that's my opinion.

Hilarious! I wonder what's going to happen if you found a scratch on your brand new car.

I'd take it right back and complain, and complain, and complain until they fixed it. My money is hard earned and you better believe I will bitch and bitch until my product is flawless.

No problems with my iphone 5 or any of the other 9 iphone 5's used by the rest of my family and close friends.
I would never go back to an iphone 4S instead if I could have an i5.
But again we didnt all pull out a microscope and examine each one and start making a dozen returns and exchanges.
But while you're at it bring it in. What's one more time, most reps should know you by now at your local Apple store:D

Now that's some bad luck

I've been lucky, I've had the 5 for a week now and it seems perfect. I must agree, though, that the phone should be perfect out of the box. Yes, I'll scratch it up probably within a few weeks or days. But I will do it, not the manufacturing process.

Can't agree with the OP on the "way too thin and way too light" thing, that's like supermodels. Don't like 'em. I think women should have some "weight and feel" to them. But, um, we were talking about phones....

Using them both, the 4 and the 5, I'll take the 5.

I paid more than 700 bugs for mine, I like to have a perfect phone for that, and I want to make the first scratch by my own^^

It must be a bugs life. That's an awful lot of bugs :D

I got my first ding at the top of my iphone 5 other day. I feel so proud now I have got it.

What's funny here is you people think I'm nuts and OCD because I won't accept a product with flaws out of box.

How wrong of me.

No - I personally think you're nuts because you think ALL iPhone 5's are crap based on your VERY limited experience.

You could've returned 100 iPhone 5s for problems and it still wouldn't amount to anything statistically relevant.

For what it's worth, I returned my first iP5 because of dead pixels. The second has been flawless (save for the nick I accidently put there when I dropped it - my iP4S probably would've shattered).

I also exchanged an iPhone 4S for an overactive processor issue that caused it to run very hot and the battery to die quickly.

I also had my iPhone 4's dock connector crap out on me (after over a year of use).

Point being, these are mass produced products and there will be hundreds, maybe thousands with defects - while millions are produced with no issue. This isn't an Apple-specific problem.....its the nature of anything mass produced by machines (which is just about everything these days). I agree we should hold Apple to a somewhat higher standard than other companies, but truth be told, there have been "issues" with iPhones since the beginning - and pretty much every consumer electronic in every category....

And by the way - I'm 100% certain if you went to Craigslist and tried to trade an iPhone 5 for an iPhone 4S - you'd probably have multiple takers. So instead of b****ing and moaning on an internet forum, do something about it....

Why the hell did you ever buy the phone in the first place?

I absolutely dreaded people like you when I worked in retail.....people looking to make a stink because they like to make a stink. I've got news....your 5 returns aren't even a drop in the ocean....and the iP5 form factor is phenomenal.

As I said above - no one is stopping you from going back to the 4S....sell the 5 or trade it. Easy and done. Seems you're just a glutton for punishment.

Ok? Do you feel smarter now? Because you pretty much ignored the main point here.

How is it acceptable for someone to keep a damaged out of the box iPhone??? If the store model doesn't have a loose rattling button but mine does out of the box, you tell me how that is satisfactory?

Your probably the kind of retail employee who just dismisses everything because you don't want to hear it and pass those very few people like myself off as OCD or "nuts". Well people like you probably don't last long in your line of work I'd imagine.

I bought the phone because I thought, like many others, that it was an actual upgrade over the 4S. To my disappointment, it was not. I will gladly go back to a 4S and call it a day. I just want to share my experience so that at least its out there.

You love your iPhone5, congratulations, but that doesn't mean there aren't problems with QC.

I have to agree with you. I'm on my 5th iPhone right now:

1- Scratches in the sides and back out of the box
2- Bent
3- Power button failed after 10 days
4- Scratches in the sides and power button
5- Scratch on the screen and chamfered edge.

I took the 5th still because it doesn't bother that much, but it gives me a bad taste on my mouth...

You had scratches on the sides and power button and returned it, but kept a phone with a scratch on the screen and chamfered edge... Am I missing something?

So do you keep bitching and bitching until your wife is perfect?
Nothing is perfect in this world, buddy :p
:apple:

My thoughts exactly. Some people are waaaay too perfectionists.

Perfectionist, maybe. But he has the right to expect a "new" product when paying top dollar for a premium device such as the iPhone. It's like buying a new car, having a scratch on the bumper and saying it would have appeared there eventually...

Cost which you equally pay if you don't get a subsidized device. Tell em something, does the cost of your plan decrease because you brought your device with you? No.

Actually, yes. Unlike in the US, where carriers are abusing their massive powers, in Europe and elsewhere around the world those awkward situations don't exist. For example, a 16 GB iPhone could cost you €100 with a €55-a-month plan. Or €200 with a €45-a-month plan.

Elsewhere in the world it is "variable price for plan". That's it. No phone? Cheap-ass plan. Expensive phone? The more you decide to pay upfront, the lower your monthly costs. The less you pay upfront, the higher the monthly costs.

In the US it is more like: high monthly costs, whether or not you get an expensive phone or not.

If you decide to get a device yourself, you can get a plan for as low as €10.

Again, US carriers are abusing their powers. If they did that anywhere else in the world, a huge antitrust investigation would be initiated.

That's right. I want my iPhone 4S back!!! I absolutely hate, hate my iPhone 5. It's a piece of crap!!! The screen just started creaking. That's the straw that broke the camel's back!!!

Original launch day iPhone 5: excessive camera rattling, Apple Genius said it seemed like something was obviously loose.

November iPhone 5: scratched bezel by power button

3rd iphone 5: defective home button

4th iPhone 5: dust in camera

5th iPhone: another home button issue. The home button rotated a few degrees.

6th iPhone: more dust in camera. Affecting photos now.

Current iPhone: screen is creaking!!!

....It's way too thin and way too light.

lol what I didn't know babies could post on MacRumors.

Why do people get into such a tizzy about contracts? If you're using at&t or tmobile etc, what reason could you have for NOT getting a subsidized phone? Even if you have to pay the etf at some point, its still cheaper than buying one outright.

Unless of course you want straight talk or something.....yada yada.....Stop whining. Theres so many more important things to worry about.

Quality has went down the tubes, yes. But no one has anyone shackled and forcing them to use it. Can't return it? Sell it, buy what will make you happy.

What's funny here is you people think I'm nuts and OCD because I won't accept a product with flaws out of box.

How wrong of me.

Pretty much yeah :)

The iPhone is not a fine piece of artwork, it is a tool. A scratch does not impede on the functionality at all.

Mine has scuffs and a camera rattle (this is actually a common 'issue' if you care to check) and I didn't exchange it... guess what... it works

If the iPhone 4s is what you want, go for it. People have their reasons, even if it sounds weird or foolish to some, but it's a good phone and I'm not here to criticise your decision.
One thing to remember - 5s is around the corner.

Praying that Apple redesigns the 5S and calls it a 6 for Summer 2013.

I would take a 4S with 4" screen and LTE. Weight is meaningless to me. The build quality of the 4S was something to behold.
