Yet most of the people I know loathe the N64 controller with a passion. The analogue stick is too tall to be comfortable, and it usually breaks off to boot. You can't access all the buttons at once - okay, it might be a 'design' feature, but it's a stupid one. The GCN design is way superior...but looks remarkably like a customised DualShock or Xbox unit.

In addition, what exactly don't you like? You seem to simply be saying that Nintendo's designs are better, without actually pinpointing what is the problem with Sony's. You can't dislike a controller simply because it hasn't changed (much) over the years, versus a company that constantly messes with control schemes to mixed results.

Refined how? Sony, for this round, are making it larger, with a bigger space between sticks, altering the triggers completely and adding a touchpad and light bar. Oh, and the D-pad has been tuned slightly, ditto the face buttons. What else is left?

Having not held one and seeing the same location of the sticks indicates it may be nearly the same experience. The thumb stick location is not very ergonomic, but it works though.

The triggers were a massive fail. I heard they were redesigned but I will reserve judgement on that until I feel the feedback of the spring return, vice the squishiness of the ps3 controller trigger.

What has Nintendo done for gaming through controllers?

Nintendo introduced all of this to home consoles: Rumble, Analogue Sticks, Motion Control, Wireless Controllers (Wavebird), D-Pad (NES), Shoulder Buttons (SNES), Dual Screen Gaming on DS/3DS/Wii U

Also: 4 Player Multiplayer on Every System without an add-on - N64

Without folks like Nintendo that try new things and evolve what gaming is and means you wouldn't have much progress. I grew up on the N64 controller and still enjoy playing games using that controller. I also had a PS2 as a kid and enjoyed the N64 more from a controller perspective.

I would rather have a company learn and improve from their mistakes and successes rather than have a company stand still for a decade.

As stated before these are why I and many others like folks like Nintendo and why we believe other companies should be trying to do more than they are.

As stated before many love the Playstation controller and that's fine - just sharing my own thoughts and opinions

Now those are more reasonable complaints, but enough to not purchase a console? For me that wouldn't be, then that is fair enough if you hold that opinion. However, I wouldn't write off the PS4 until you've tried them.

This is where I don't get your logic. Just because you can't put Sony on the pedestal, that rightly or wrongly you put Nintendo, you won't buy one of their products? That's just odd.

But the N64 pad was ridiculously flawed, as you couldn't access all the buttons at once, you had to totally shift grips, and it was only a single analogue stick. Nintendo's GCN controller didn't improve matters too much either, and arguably cribs heavily off Sony's designs.
I'd say it's more based off the Virtual Boy controller, it's almost identical but with some parts flipped around.

The DualShock4, by all accounts, has a wider space between the sticks, which should prevent the thumb collision problem.

This is true :)

I didn't realize how much I disliked it until I used the Xbox 360 controller. Add that plus the squishy triggers and color me disappointed. I mainly used my PS3 for blu-ray, not even that now as I use iTunes.

I talked with dagless about the triggers and said it was not an issue. I have one preordered I'm just not sure how much time I will spend on it. By that same token I'm not al, that pleased with the Xbox one shenanigans either.

Sony are definitely the ones who are more conservative about their controllers, and ways in general, and Nintendo are more prone to just try something new. Each generation saw something crazy added to the console or controller. Their most conservative system (the Gamecube) was a flop for them!

Where Sony pushes connectivity between services and great software solutions, Nintendo pushes for new hardware features. And Microsoft take what Sony do and slap an American flag on it. I find.

this is what it looks like now lol

Oooops, forgot about VHS machines...

I preferred and had the sleeker Sony Betamax's... :D

You mean something that looks sleek and sexy like this? :p

LOL...

Interesting.

I heard that the Sony Designers had studied the fact that people would shove their Home Entertainment equipment (consoles, DVD players, cable boxes, etc.) up against the sides of the shelving causing the unit to overheat if the fan was on the side against the wall.

Hence, the angles and the middle gap used throughout the PS4 would still ensure a space large enough for airflow no matter what side is against a wall.

Awesome design...

IMHO
the fact that the ps4 controller handles look more like the gamecube controller handles makes me look forward to it... those simply were molded right into my hands

if it weren't for the stupid Z button, the small d-pad and the right smaller analog stick it was the best controller ever: perfect ergonomic, brilliant face button layout.. and good analog triggers with a nice rifle like pressure point

I agree. I recently played my GC again, and the controller just fit in my hand like a natural extension. I never really was happy with the button placement (like most people).

Anyway, when I then saw the PS 4 controller's molded shape, like the GC controllers shape, I thought that was an excellent idea.

Yup, I've been playing through Brawl again using the GC controller. It's still a total treat. Maybe once the Wii U gets GC games on the eShop they might release a wireless GC controller?

Have you seen this 3rd party controller? Looks like someone is trying to merge a Wii U Pro Controller and the GameCube controller - as far as the joystick/d-pad layout.

I would love if they took that another step by making the face buttons like the GC with that MASSIVE A button :)

[NEWS]

Since this is where E3 complaints are, here's more MS info:

"Microsoft's first Xbox One push? All about the NFL
The company's first ad shows people watching NFL programming on the Xbox One and promotes some of its integrated football features."

http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-57601674-75/microsofts-first-xbox-one-push-all-about-the-nfl/

I guess they are trying to reel in the non-gamers.

I remember flat panels weren't really selling, until they started targeting the Sports Fans...

Gaming may be the central function on Microsoft's Xbox One, but in the company's first major Xbox One TV ad, it's all about the pigskin.

The company on Thursday published to YouTube (and television networks) its first Xbox One TV spot. Rather than focus on gaming, however, the ad centers on the upcoming console's ability to integrate with the National Football League's live games. Microsoft also promoted the console's fantasy football integration and the ability to get highlights from different games.

The ad was timed to go live with the opening of the 2013-2014 NFL season, which might be why Microsoft decided to kick off its TV promotions with football. Still, it's somewhat surprising, considering the console is designed first to play games.

That said, Microsoft has made clear to this point that its Xbox One is about more than just gaming and has pushed the entertainment side of its console. It appears, at least for now, that focusing on entertainment is its first-line marketing strategy.
