Only a problem if you insist on buying on/around launch day.

I usually wait about half a year after release, and then buy games for around 20 bucks from amazon UK. The next gen will probably be the same.

The real threat is margin compression causing AAA games to not get made period

Even at $80, the pricepoint of games still doesn't match inflation.

The AAA model will eventually kill itself unless the industry figures out how to counter shrinking margins

Xbox One. Dedicated servers will be AMAZING for first person shooters, which is my most played genre on console. Destiny, Halo, and Titanfall (Xbox Exclusive) will be 10x more playable that way.

Also I dig the quickness of the system, the controller, the Twitch.TV integration which is the way of the future for the gaming world.

I'll be buying the PS4, really wanted the xbox One for TitanFall and the new Halo but really? DRM, 24 hour check-in, and kinect always watching you is just a turn off.
Who else wanted the Xbox one but went with PS4 due to these issues?

Xbox one. Cant go playstation, hate the controller. All of the perceived negatives you mentioned have been reversed. Not one ps4 exclusive game has impressed me. The Sony fanboys sure are having a great time with it tho.
I will stick with Xbox, as the online experience blows stony out of the water. Sony has offered it for free for years, but it sucks. Now ps4 will require owners to pay the same price as Xbox to be online. It should be really funny seeing how it performs online for all these fanboys after launch. Ms, for all their perceived evilness, has a tried and true online experience, with new servers being added for extra support. I can't wait.

High price point would probably be the wrong way to go in today's industry.

Lower the price of entrance, charge more later for DLC and microtransactions, that seems to be the trend of the future.

Mind you, I'd rather pay a little more and have the complete product right away, but that's not where things are heading, I'm afraid.

PS4 is pre-ordered, will pick up a one eventually when I get my perfect dark, banjo Kazzoie, viva piñata or Kameo new titles...... Sadly Killer Instinct isn't the RARE game I want.....

The problem with dedicated servers is when they're being run by EA and similar publishers. Dedicated means they can and will be switched off before the end of the console's life. If you could select to use either Dedicated or P2P, well then you've got a winner.

I hope this video streaming thing kicks off, ever since Sony announced it I've been really interested to see what the uptake would be on it. I couldn't think of anything more boring than watching someone else play games, maybe I will when these services are released?

Well if you expect the same service that was on the PS3 then you'd be wrong. Even the Vita has a better service, and that's a handheld. It's not magic. These services have just been limited by the hardware they're on and how they were initially set up. The PS4 service will be just like the the Vita (but faster!), Xbox 1 and PC.

Mine was full of being called names :( so I stopped subscribing to Live.

I also don't get how people can say they "hate" the controller for either console without having actually used them yet. The PS4 controller is physically larger than the DS3, with longer handles and generally wider, and both Xbone and PS4 controllers have had re-designed triggers and analogue sticks.

Hands on is what counts, ultimately.

Yup, the PS4 controller feels very different to PS3 or anything I've held before. It's closer to the Gamecube in terms of comfort, but with a more traditional layout.

I hope they add PC support because I'll buy one just for that and replace my 360 controller.

Well, its pretty easy to understand if you look at the controller. It hasn't changed that much as far as the general button layout. Sure there are some minor changes, but come on, they can't change them that much or people would up in arms. It's not a radical redesign. In general, I don't like playstation controllers, and simply looking at it tells me it hasn't changed enough for me to want to use it. To me that is in the end, a deciding factor on what console I buy, among other things. If I don't like the controller, im not gonna buy it.

Excellent :).

You mean the button layout that's the same as the Xbox, DS and 3DS that started out on the SNES?

Come on you know what I was implying. Each controller has a similar layout, sure, but they also have their own unique shapes and distances between each button and such. I just happen to not like the ps controller.

I agree - PS layout is not my favorite - I really wish the joysticks were placed differently. But, I know many PS folks that love that positioning. Just seems odd that the d-pad is so in your face even though games don't use much of that these days.

Id have a really hard choice to make between them if it weren't for the fact you cant watch Netflix without paying for gold on xbox. I rarely do multiplayer gaming so its just not worth me paying for it.

I don't think Sony will create a controller anytime soon where the d-pad and the left analog stick are switched. Why not? The current lay-out screams "PlayStation!". It's basically their 'trademark'.

That said, I actually really like the PlayStation lay-out (but I have absolutely no problems with the Xbox lay-out, either).

Nothing about swapping them, but a total rethink and redesign would be good to see - a controller designed with no analog sticks in mind would be nice to see what would happen if they thought about that stuff during conception

No analogue sticks, really?

No analogue sticks, really?

I'm saying the original design was more or less modeled after the SNES controller - a D-Pad - four face buttons and shoulder buttons.

They then added analogue sticks when Nintendo did the N64, but added 2 instead of one. They didn't rethink the layout or try to imagine what the controller would be if it was conceived with the sticks in mind. Nintendo did BIG rethinks for their controllers in this transition - multiple times to perfect it - N64, GameCube etc., Sony did not.

I know that this point has been brought up before and pushed off as crazyiness or you don't understand because I love this because I grew up with it.

But that is why many including myself aren't the biggest fan of the Sony controllers - not saying it is right or wrong - but for me that is why I don't like it - I understand you and several other people do :)

But the N64 pad was ridiculously flawed, as you couldn't access all the buttons at once, you had to totally shift grips, and it was only a single analogue stick. Nintendo's GCN controller didn't improve matters too much either, and arguably cribs heavily off Sony's designs.

The complaint I've seen most about the DualShock design is that when the two sticks are pushed inwards together, some people find their thumbs colliding. Beyond that, the complaints come down to the physical size of controllers, which is always a problem when only a single design is used - a prime example being Microsoft's woes with the first Xbox.

The DualShock4, by all accounts, has a wider space between the sticks, which should prevent the thumb collision problem. It's also physically larger, which may help other people.

Just sharing the concern shared by many. Most of the people I know love the N64 controller and the GameCube controller. The point of the N64 is that you are either playing in 2D or 3D mode and you don't need the d-pad all of the time. Nintendo learned from that design and changed things up a bunch with GameCube.

The point is you can see a company learning and trying new things to improve the gaming experience, versus a design that never changes even if it would benefit from. The guy whose job it is at Sony to make a great controller has been sitting around doing a bunch of nothing for a decade now.

Just sharing my viewpoint - understandably not everyone shares it - but many do.

They did add rumble to the same form factor six axis controller. That had to eat into some of his design time. :D

It was a great design when the controller came out, but the layout needs to be refined a lil bit.

It should also be noted that new controller designs encourage new gaming experiences and give developers new tools to work with. The way you interface with a game is critical and having that fresh and forward looking encourages a new generation of games that do more than just look better.

Just my opinion once again - I know others are a firm believer in if it aint broke don't fix it - after all what is a Playstation without that controller layout?

Yet most of the people I know loathe the N64 controller with a passion. The analogue stick is too tall to be comfortable, and it usually breaks off to boot. You can't access all the buttons at once - okay, it might be a 'design' feature, but it's a stupid one. The GCN design is way superior...but looks remarkably like a customised DualShock or Xbox unit.

In addition, what exactly don't you like? You seem to simply be saying that Nintendo's designs are better, without actually pinpointing what is the problem with Sony's. You can't dislike a controller simply because it hasn't changed (much) over the years, versus a company that constantly messes with control schemes to mixed results.

Refined how? Sony, for this round, are making it larger, with a bigger space between sticks, altering the triggers completely and adding a touchpad and light bar. Oh, and the D-pad has been tuned slightly, ditto the face buttons. What else is left?
