Face ID will get better. Just like Touch ID. First gen was slow. Second gen will works much better. Also for Face ID the default requires you look at the phone try it with the feature disabled. It’s under Face ID settings -> attention awareness- require attention for Face ID. Makes it more lax for security.
Yep, it’s been like that the entire time hah. Thanks for the help. Not sure there’s anything else I can do.

I will try scanning my face outside in the sunlight to get the best possible scan. I rescanned in my bathroom and rebooted, so far so good.

Return the X and get the 8.

There is absolutely no reason to have an X if you don't use faceID
Ever heard of the 5.8” OLED?

I have the 8. I love both phones. They each have advantages over the other.

Honestly. Once I stopped worrying about the Face ID and positioning it just works. Just raise the phone and as soon as I see the screen start lighting up i swipe and it unlocks.

Al used it while driving using Oakley polarized shades. No issues.

What about having dual camera in a smaller-than-Plus device? That’s the main reason I want the X.

As for FaceID, it seems to work well for many but I bet there are some kinks that will be worked out in future iOS updates. I do wonder if there are some QC issues with the dot projector though.

I’m not too worried about FaceID because TouchID hasn’t worked that well for me. It has never worked well with my left thumb. It’s very reliable using my right thumb, but quite often I operate my iPhone with my left hand. No matter how many times I rescan that thumb, it just doesn’t work. My left thumb had long deep creases across the shallower finger prints that my right thumb doesn’t have.

Security? Is someone going to steal my dog pictures? Not everyone cares about phone security.

All my sensitive data requires authentication inside the phone. I can easily wipe my phone from iCloud if it gets stolen. Sensitive data is more prone to theft from external services, than on your personalized device.

THIS X 1,000,000,000.

People somehow believe the rest of the world is awaiting to grab their phones to look at their pictures. Sometimes i wonder whether everybody excepts me has a picture displaying the nuclear codes.

I’ve tried rescanning to no avail. Rebooting my phone made it a bit quicker, hopefully that’s all it needed.

You might also try avoiding a rescan and just letting it build up a library of your face scans. Every time it fails and you unlock with your passcode, it’s adding what it scanned to the FaceID database. In theory, it should get more reliable over time. Rescanning might clear the cache and start the machine learning process from the beginning again.

The slowness is a concern. Hopefully restarting won’t be a frequent requirement. I would think speed will improve with updates. My first generation Apple Watch improved dramatically in terms of performance and reliability with each major software update.

Um, you mean like having no huge chins at the top and bottom, a higher resolution OLED panel with higher contrast ratio, stainless steel frame, et cetera? FaceID isn't perfect, but I'm going to give it a chance. It's supposed to learn your face over time.

I found that when you scan, if you rotated your head slowly, and also turn it left and right as you slowly rotate, it works great. There is no time limit once you start, so go slowly with both attempts and really rotate the head left and right and up and down. I think some people rotate their head too quickly trying to get all those bars to turn green.

? There are a ton of reasons to have it. For sure it’s a personal preference I think mainly based on Apple’s ecosystem. If you have a Mac and iPad then an iPhone and maybe an Apple Watch it all works together especially considering Apple’s killer app, to this day: iMessage

Don’t get me wrong I’ve been swayed to get a Galaxy S+ but for me it has come down to these things and of course this was before the iPhone X shipped.

1) Ecosystem: I have 2 macs 2 ipads 2 Apple TV’s and 2 iPhones and an Apple Watch. It all works together rather well.

2) Apple customer support is legendary and infinitely better than anyone else’s. This is almost a universal truth their service and support is so good.

3) Resell value of used Apple products.

4) 1st rate apps come to iPhone either exclusively or first. Generally speaking and in my opinion app for app across platforms the iOS version of an app is usualky smoother, faster and more stable.

That's why there is an iPhone 8 plus. There aren't hardly any reasons to get the X over the 8 plus if you don't like faceid.

Exactly. It works great for me every time. Oh, wait, I don't have FaceId. I have TouchID. iPhone 8 plus is the better phone imho.

I’m still going back and forth between the 8 plus and the X. TouchID doesn’t work with my left thumb, so it has been a bit frustrating and I’m hoping FaceID will work better for me. The bigger question for me is whether or not I will be happy carrying a Plus size iPhone. I’ve never had a Plus model, but I really want the dual camera. That makes the smaller X model very appealing.

It took me a bit to get use to carrying the larger size over the iPhone 5. But I love it now and it would be hard to go back to a smaller phone.

? Take FaceId away and the 2 phones are the same ? Have you seen an iPhone X?

Have you not been reading this forum for the last 2 weeks? The iPhone X and 8 plus have the same exact spec except the screen and size. The iPhone 8 plus actually has touch ID, and a wider (more usable) screen. Like I said, both are almost identical.

Have you tried resetting Face ID and doing the two scans from different angles? One at normal upright position infront of your face, the second from a low angle or when you're lying in bed. That fixed it for me.

My most recent scan and a reboot fixed it for now. I’ll try this if I’m still have issues, thanks.

Iphone 8.

Not galaxy S8.

The whole point of the X is face ID.
Apple sacrificed themselves on the notch for the sake of FaceID.

Why on earth would you have everything the X is without face ID.

Just return it and get the 8

I found FaceID was more reliable once I recalibrated outside in bright sunlight. Also, I just swipe up to open. I don’t wait on it. It seems to work 99% of the time.

I’m thinking there’s some logic in there that allows for a more accurate and consistent unlock as time goes on.

I do miss Touch ID for some things, but I’ve adjusted to the lack of a home button almost instantly.

Multitasking is is much faster if you just don’t wait for it. Just swipe up and to the right quickly.

Overall, there’s quirks, but it’s an amazing phone.

I turned off that attention thing in settings, mine works 100 percent of the time now and fast. Can’t see a reason to leave it on myself.
