Age of Empires 2 resolution problems

Resolutions???

Okay, 1280x1024 does NOT show up in my options.
I downloaded and after about 4 attempts got that SwitchresX to load and go.
Lost entire display...quick Google safe mode in mac...worked.
Fussed with it for a while...besides being asked to register my software nothing else seemed to work with SwitchresX!
Thankfully, using the instructions on his site I was able to recover my display and reset it back to original. Further attempts to introduce 1280x1024 gave similar results however.

Any other ideas?

So I am trying to get AoE to run on my macbook but can't get it to work.
I've downloaded the 1.0.6 update but still it won't work. Also, I've tried holding down the command key while the program is starting but I don't have a "force 256 colors" option. It simply isn't there. All I see is Refresh Monitor Rate, Don't Play Start-up Movies, Don't Switch Resolution for Movies, Disable Sound, Disable Background Music and Use Hardware Cursor.

Can anybody help me?

Anyone ever have any luck with this? I'd love to play at a higher resolution on my 24" iMac, but the 1280x1024 box is grayed out.

I've similar problems with the 1280x1024 option not being selectable. But when I checked the screen resolution options for my iMac G5, the 1280x1024 just isn't there. It goes up to 1152x720 then directly to 1440x900. In my case, that is probably the cause of it all. Too bad...

Depending on which G5 iMac you have, 1440x900 is the maximum possible resolution your computer can display.

Hi guys, I'm new. I have just completed the registration. I was surprise when I saw people speaking at this in 2016! Also I think it's time to bump this important thread! Many years have passed since this game was developed but nobody found a solutions at this... I don't think is something challenging but I don't know, maybe I'm wrong.
However please guys solve this, also I have this problem with a macmini 4.1 mid 2010 and osx snow leopard installed in. Black bars are very ugly and 1280 option isn't selectable in spite of my full hd monitor

edit* Also aoe2 icon isn't good. helmet didn't appear! See the picture :/
