If they put AIM on the iphone as an app, why wouldn't they put ichat on the iphone?

Maybe because ichat is known as a major video-conferencing app, and they can't provide this right now. It still amazes me that we're getting AIM, when you could just pay ATT gazillions more for SMS.

I doubt it. The messages will be sent and count as data (unless on Wi-Fi).

I believe that since the app runs in a "sandbox", once you go to the home screen or another app, AIM will not run in the background and you will not continue to get IMs.

Wouldn't this be a potential workaround to free text messages?

Yes...and no...if AIM wanted to, they could definitely relay IMs sent to cell numbers to AT&T, which then they could charge as texts...if they really wanted to.

So does this mean Apple is definitely coming out with iChat for iPhone or that they definitely aren't? I can think of arguments both ways.

Well, Apple is allowed to take AIM and make iChat including AIM...but no one knows now.

Isn't AIM going to require Apple's Push notification service, which isn't coming till the fall?

Before the fall, it will simply sign you out when you exit the application. After fall, you'll still be signed in.

Unless AIM and eBay are special and get push notification now :).

Yes. But why the hell would they do that when they have access to the internet? The only party that would benefit would be the phone companies. It just doesn't make sense.

I know. I'm just saying that it's possible.

Couldn't AT&T force Apple to force AOL to do that otherwise they won't put AIM in AppStore? Just wondering. I have no idea.

I mean obviously AT&T did something for the other phones to count AIM as text. So couldn't they at least prevent people from SMSing through AIM for free?

Aparently people must have skimmed my post. SMS is already obsolete on the iPhone. AIM isn't making it easier to send messages to other iphone users, or SMS users than it is already to do with your email! They don't charge you for sending emails to ##########@teleflip.com! Why would they do that here?

Maybe. I don't know the contract specifics, but it sounds flaky. Remember, Apple is dealing with many more phone companies than just AT&T.

Yes, but those other phones usually needed custom software that required a partnership with AT&T. AOL is partnering with Apple. Its a little different (I think).

Yeah, my thoughts exactly.

two words

two words explain why aim WONT be in the form of texts:

ipod touch

I'm surprised no one thought of this

When I first heard that they were making an AIM app I was reallly excited. Now, I don't know if I will even download it as my friends and I never use AIM anymore, we just text so I don't really see a use for it for me.
