I hate the useless and meaningless phrase 'future proof.' People who try to do it are fools that are easily parted with their money.

If one purchases a laptop with higher non-user-upgradable specs than necessary at the moment, the following applies: As long as the increase in resale-price in combination with increase in longevity, is equal to or higher than the increase in purchase price, it's worth it. And only then. Nothing foolish in that.

If you won't call this future-proofing, what would be more appropriate to call it?

Awwww man, there you go making a lot of sense and all...

I don't do any video editing. I do heavy photoshop and Aperture editing on 11MP pictures and haven't ever needed more than 2GB. People really over estimate what they need. Just because OS X will use all the RAM you throw at it does t mean you need all the RAM you've got.

Not my experience at all. Photoshop runs much, much better on every PC and Mac I've ever used it on with more memory. Just because you can run it with 2 GB of memory doesn't mean you should.

so you waste a ton of money on something that by the time you need it will be dirt cheap. Smart.

A ton of money? There isn't a huge range in cost from the lowest model Air to the highest, but if you could squeeze another year out of a model with more RAM or a bigger drive, you'd save substantial money.

Im a newbie in mac world. Just got my new air 2 days ago and my life is so much better =) Really the performance is superb, boots up in 10 seconds, shuts down in 2. And the light weight is just the biggest plus for me, just like having a book in your lap, very comfortable computer. Oh and the battery, now when I'm writing this I got open only safari it says 9hours 12 min remaining battery life.

Good points.

I can't understand why so many people here seem to be so averse to the term 'future-proofing'. Not everyone can afford to change their computer every year so the term can absolutely be applied to people looking to make their computer last as long as possible.

Keep in mind the Air does have an advantage when it comes to swapping RAM to the disk. While an SSD is not nearly as fast as RAM, it's 3-4x faster than the average mechanical disk. There was a thread on here somewhere where someone using a base 11" (2GB RAM) opened every single built in application and the machine was still usable.
