UPDATE: Got a QLL and the screen is awesome. Looks like its the L that's the key, the samsung screens are clearly more consistent overall. There is a faint tint on the left, but million times better than the first two I had.

And you know it's a Samsung screen how exactly?

Brought my ipad air back today. The employee I showed it to didn't immediately see the problem but after I told him to read a paragraph of text from left to right in portrait mode he saw it.

I said this is the main reason I bought the air - to read. He agreed it is distracting and initiated a replacement order. The store didn't stock 128gb models so I'll have to wait a few days.

Hope the replacement is perfect. I'll be running a ton of tests on it before I leave the store

What tests do you run? And I'm STILL waiting to return my iPad. I got it on day 1 and they have been out of stock and unable to get a replacement for me (128gb tmobile space grey).

Makes me wonder if they put a quiet shutdown on production to fix these issues. A company like Apple should have a spare allowance for replacements.

The colour change from left to right can be seen in the game centre login screen as it is mostly white. This can be done on a clean iOS device. It can also be seen in Safari and a few other places.

Another check will be for dirt/dust under the screen. Again a white screen should show these up.

Another test would be to sign in as my Apple App Store id and download color wheel to test for dead pixels.

7 iPads later, finally a near perfect screen.
The only thing is that there is a very small backlight leak right above the home button (maybe 2 - 3mm) but if I had to pick a spot, it would be there. Watching movies eliminates it completely. White on all four corners, split key board in all orientations match.

The screen is a little on the warm side, but beautiful nonetheless.
I'm actually pretty fortunate to have 8 apple stores about an hour awAy from me, plus 1 in my town.

I find it bizarre that none of this is being mentioned in Tech media. This seems pretty wide spread if people are having to replace four or five Airs and still have issues, the PS4 had something like 0.4% issues and it's over the front page everywhere. Are they that scared of Apple?

I wrote about it in my daily columns at Mediapost. Have written about it before with the third gen iPads as well. Made a press query to Apple that went unanswered.

No, it's not widespread. Just because a few people are... persistent .... it doesn't meant its a widespread problem. Only 2% of buyers return their iPads. 2% of millions of people is a lot of people for sure! but 98% is a whole lot more. iPad returns are not a media worthy story.

The PS4 issues are also not media worthy. But the stories are more likely to generate clicks and revenue for the sites running them. A story on "Apple customers returning iPads 7 times" just doesn't seem like it would generate that many clicks...

could the magnets be causing the problem (within ipad or a case), has anyone tried a process of elimination (like adding, removing the smart cover, case etc)?

I'm going for lucky 4 tomorrow. I've had the first 2 replaced via the online store, but this time I'm going into an Apple Store.

I got the newest machine only 2 days ago, but it it's a DMPL-H... I don't care about the first 4 letters, but "H"? that seems older, but I had to wait over a week for delivery. Huh...

As for backlight bleed. I can accept a bit of bleed. It's screen uniformity that's the biggie for me.

But really... 4th iPad air is utterly ridiculous. I'm sick of this, but I'm not going to allow Apple to get away with selling me a product that is obviously inferior to what it should be.

Agreed. I'm attempting a 3rd exchange through AppleCare in Europe but if it fails I will also head to the nearest Genius Bar because I'm exhausted. All this energy and time wasted is not acceptable.
Bought the Air on nov 2nd and since then spent more time on the phone and on these boards than enjoying what I paid nearly a thousand bucks for. Non sense.
I also agree we *might* represent less than 1% of the total customers yet the fact that so many if us had to go through several replacements before getting a decent unit should not happen and prove that something went wrong with that release.
Wether the topic makes it way to the press media or not doesn't change the fact that I never thought one day I'd go through all this hassle buying an Apple product.

I've noticed that 70-80% of my screen has a minor yellow tint to it , starting on the left and going all the way across and the last 20-30% of my screen on the right has that nice blueish tint.

At the same time I compared it with my Iphone 5 and it still doesn't look as yellow as my Iphone 5. I remember getting my 5 last year and noticing it having that yellow tint instead of the blueish tint my Iphone 4 had. I took it to the Apple store and they called it normal saying some factories ship out yellow, some ship out blue, and that they couldn't exchange it as a "defect" because most of theirs in the store and the replacements in the back looked the same.

I've noticed that it doesn't really bother me and and I dont notice it on my 5 therefore I'm thinking maybe the lesser yellow tint on my Air might not be such a big deal.

That's why I dont know if I should exchange it or not. There's nothing else really wrong with the screen that I can see in terms of dead pixels or dust or anything and I'm hearing these stories of people going through 7 exchanges to get a slightly better one which I dont know if I'm willing to go through 7 exchanges.

For some reason my Air feels slightly heavier and a tad bit thicker than the displays ones I've played with in the store which seems kinda wierd but maybe it's just me. I'm sure it's an Air though by the box and body dimensions.

And the PPI.

Pretty sure it has something to do with smaller and bigger screens.

So the Iphone screens are suppose to look noticeably sharper and clearer than the Ipad screens ???

Just picked up my replacement, Serial is a DMPL, the previous one was a DMQL.

Will report back once I've had a good look and set it up.

What I will say is that both Air's seem to have marks on the space grey back panel, the first one having some that didn't come off.

This one has some but so far they have come off.

Gotluck, sourds like you got lucky finally. No yellowing at all? No bookspine? Or just "acceptable" ?

Just out of curiosity, what's your serial letters?
(I know it's already been mentioned numerous times in this forum, the defect bears no relationship with the serial numbers)

DMPL. It really is quite a joy, sadly enough, having a screen that doesn't have any weird discoloration. Although after using it a little more, I noticed that the upper left corner in portrait mode is ever so slightly darker. But I can live with that.

there are times when I feel like it is a little dim at the top left corner near the cellular signal bars. Not sure if it's the app, brightness, ambient light, my mind, or what but I cant always see it.

After reading these threads it's hard for me to tell if its really there :p For whatever reason it doesnt seem to extend down the whole spine. I wouldn't say it suffers from the partially yellow screen problem. If it's yellow, it's uniformly yellow :p. I'm having a hard time finding a problem, we'll just say.

seven????

I can believe it. It took 4 for me to get a good if not perfect screen. The first 3 were yellow overall and looked terrible compared to my other devices. Not something I could get used to, nor should I have to.

Mine has that slight dimness at the top left corner also and a very slight yellow tinge at the lower left, but is overall a very good screen, otherwise uniform, bright and slightly bluish white. I must also add that sometimes I really am not sure these issues are there and a couple of times when the top bar looked darker on the left it was because of what was underneath with iOS transparency. :)

My screen has a piece of dust under the glass, and a scratch or some other kind of imperfection that is only visible when there is a screen protector on the glass.

I didn't notice the dust until today, had my air for a couple weeks, when I saw it while trying to clear the screen for the second protector install.

The scratch under the screen protector was visible from day one, but I thought it was dust under the protector. Still looks like a dust bubble under the second protector I installed today, but it is in the exact same spot as when I had my first protector on.

What am I going to do about it? Nothing. Both imperfections are below my OCD threshold ;).

UPDATE 2: I am too optimistic of a guy and really believed it was different. After turning down the brightness it was yellow and pink just like the rest. Additionally, this time there was either a group of dead pixels or dust under the center area of the screen, i.e. unavoidable. It looks like I am joining Anti Lucifer, I will wait for the next update to the mini/air in hopes for a consistent screen without having to waste all this time/stress return rebuying. What's worse is that tons of these will probably show up as refurbs eventually. I guess if it doesn't bother you then you're good, but I don't remember the 2,3,4 having these issues...is it because of the compromises for the size/weight loss? If so I would rather have a heavier device if it meant the screen was superb. I guess that's why the weight of the 3 never bothered me too much.

Well my second iPad Air seems to suffer from the left half of the screen being more yellow than the right.

This one seems a little less more pronounced mind you, I do wonder if it's the glass playing tricks on it or what.

The case does have a odd mark on the back, best I can describe it is a tiny mark which looks like a bit of dirt is in between the anodised space grey coating so it doesn't rub off but it isn't a chip either.

There is a tiny mark by the lightening connector but as this is an area that is very easily exposed to marks I'm not worried about it.

Maybe my fingers are a bit dry for the winter but this glass panel doesn't feel as slick either but more likely down to my fingers.

Not sure if I'll bother returning/buying another one.

DMPLL=Good screen

Key is to request anything with the 4th and 5th letters being LL. Seems to be a good batch.

All my DMPLK were terrible.

I am afraid that's not the case here in the UK.

My last one before being banned by Bullring Store, Birmingham UK is DMPLL - it as two spots of dusts + left blue band + left half yellow tint + bottom half pink tint + light bleed + on unwrapping, there were pieces of ?rubber silicone? protruding from where the metal frame meets the glass.
