Man, that's gotta suck. I was lucky, my second air had a great screen, pure luck i guess.

Btw, how did you notice a dead pixel? I'm just wondering if there's a certain way to make it easier to notice or is it very obvious?

Thanks.

The retina display certainly makes it harder to see dead pixels (which is a good thing). I did a Google search for a white background and saved it to my camera roll on the iPad. Then I viewed the white background and stretched it out in the photo app so that it filled the whole screen. From here I can easily see defects such as screen yellowing, faint lines, and dead pixels. Some dead pixels will only show when a certain color is displayed, so you can try colors other than white. Many people will say "don't go looking for them", but my feeling is that you're better off finding them within your 14-day return period than after. Unfortunately for me, once I find one, I see it everywhere. My eye just goes straight towards it and it drives me crazy.

I think that the retina screens made things complicated for apple and for us.

They have problems on it's own, and when we spend big bucks for our devices, we wan't them to be perfect.

Despite all that hassle I had with retina macbook and and new ipad air, I still like those products and how I was served at genius bar. But.......something is going on at Apple, not sure if this is going to the right direction.

I followed your steps and I can't find any dead pixels. It's tricky though, you stare and stare until your eyes cross.. screen needs to be super clean as well..

are you going to get a fifth Air or have you had enough..?

I agree. When I got my replacement Air on 7th Nov, the yellowing was quite noticeable. I left it on full brightness on a completely blank white screen overnight several times and the yellowing got better.

Recently, I've only just been able to see the yellow on the keyboard (however not on the "old school" keyboard some apps still use). I often would close my eyes, spin the Air around and open my eyes to see if I notice the yellow side. Now I can't.
You're saying all iPad Airs will eventually sort themselves out? I'm hoping you're right! :(

This post is actually rMini related but...I'll be returning my 128gb Space Grey LTE (UK). Green line down middle of the screen. Doesn't show up in screenshots weirdly, so here's a very hastily take photo taken with my phone.

It won't show up in screenshots because a screenshot is a capture of the information on the screen it doesn't actually take a picture of the screen.

That looks like a nasty problem. I'd deffo get it replaced!

Yeah, that makes sense. Not hopeful they'll have stock of it any time soon (128gb LTE) so I'll just keep using it till next week when I'll be near the Apple store anyway.

I know they keep products for replacement purposes, but I'm skeptical they'd have any of mine right now for such purposes.

I find it bizarre that none of this is being mentioned in Tech media. This seems pretty wide spread if people are having to replace four or five Airs and still have issues, the PS4 had something like 0.4% issues and it's over the front page everywhere. Are they that scared of Apple?

Mmmph. Agree.

I am on my 5th Air.
Previous issues included clump of dusts under screen, clump of stuck pixels (bright on black background), heavy yellow tints

Now - Pink tint bottom half with yellow tint blending in from the left side + 3 spots of dusts
What I had done so far - a total of 48 hours (on 4 separate occasions) of full brightness of white background / Colours cycling for few hours on full brightness (the one used to "revive" dead pixels) - Pink + Yellow tints are still there.

Found this article. Not sure how much this related to iPad air technology:

I strongly believe this is a very widespread issue. I've had plenty of Apple products and never had to return something for screen issues before never mind 4+ times. My feeling is that the majority of the people who are happy with theirs simply do not notice the issues or do not care about them. I had an iPad 4 before this and the screen was beautiful. When I was at the Apple store last night, I looked at a few of the Airs on display and they all had some sort of issue. The most prevalent was the dark band on the left side of the screen. I'm sure this is just a side effect of the IGZO technology or the backlighting only on one side, but it's very irritating.

After going through 4 Airs in total, I'm just giving up on it for now. I don't believe it is possible to get a perfect screen at this point in the production. I am going to wait a few months and see how things are. I really think the only options are:

1. Get an iPad Air that has a screen with defects that affect your experience enough to make you want to return it.

2. Get an iPad Air that has a screen with defects that don't affect your experience enough to make you want to return it.

All 4 of mine fit into #1, but I'm sure lots of people are getting #2's whether they notice it or not. I want an iPad Air that has no screen defects. I don't think that's asking too much.

As far as the tech sites go, the verge and macrumors, like it or not, tend not to write articles that reflects badly on apple. They link them, sure, but rarely do they write one themselves, the verge is especially bad at this actually. I'm sure there are many scientists/engineers on this site who use hard data as evidence and now anandtech/displaymate have firm proof in the case of gamut, and for the tinting, there are tons of customer images out there along with numerous threads on the apple support site.

Unfortunately, some customers are not as detail oriented and either don't notice or care about the tinting defect and these for now are the majority of the millions sold/year. We'll see if the rMini gets a silent update on gamut (doubtful), but I'd like to see consistency in the screens produced. I shouldn't have to sift through serial numbers and/or multiple return/exchanges to get one that isn't darkened or defected.

I have had 3 LG screens with yellowing (rMini) and yellow tinting (2 Airs, a white and black 16gb). I am going for a QL air this time and if not successful I will just wait for the next revision.

How can you tell which ones are Sharp or LG or Samsung screens?

I'm beginning to doubt that there are ANY good screens sold to the public... Even the people who say they have a "perfect screen" end up posting pictures of their device and I can clearly see the half-yellow/half-pink tint. Apple thinks people won't notice. It's so odd how the ones on display are ALWAYS perfect though. I asked one of the geniuses and he said that those are sold exclusively to the Apple stores - makes me think Apple keeps their nice screens for display and sells **** to customers in hopes they won't notice.

I have 2 DMPL and its the same problem, yellow on left with white background and yellow leak with a black background. Please contact the Apple care for problem feedback. I dont understand Apple continues to produce products with screen problem...

Should make a petition ?!

No just the powerfull light in the Apple store cover the bad screens... You cant see the defect products...

SORRY, I don't think so. It looked awful to me.
But it's up to you, if you don't mind, just leave it alone.

if you really cares a lot, split the keyboard(white color) and observe the colors.

No, you are just getting used to it.
I thought the same before, but I felt the yellowish when I reading books, and my camera proved the eye-cheating thing...

No it's pretty obvious that it's evening out. Every day that I turn on the device the yellow half gets smaller. Considering how widespread the problem is I personally think that it can't be a defect, but instead a product of trying to manufacture each unit too fast - without waiting for things to dry and such.

My left half of the screen is still more yellow compared to the right. I left it on a white screen over night. Not fading at all. Off to the apple store to get a third. Most of what I do is web and email that has a white background. It's annoying on Mac rumors as I read my screen gets whiter as my eyes move to the right

At this point I just want the display to be even.

Brought my ipad air back today. The employee I showed it to didn't immediately see the problem but after I told him to read a paragraph of text from left to right in portrait mode he saw it.

I said this is the main reason I bought the air - to read. He agreed it is distracting and initiated a replacement order. The store didn't stock 128gb models so I'll have to wait a few days.

Hope the replacement is perfect. I'll be running a ton of tests on it before I leave the store

There's nothing to dry the screen isn't glued. I'm glad it's working out for you but this isn't a problem that goes away it's a defective screen. I did the whole leave it on for 24hrs etc if anything it got worse and probably screwed the life of the battery.

So to update you all on my trials and tribulations in getting a non defective iPad Air, I ended up ordering another one online at the Apple Store. Also a faint yellow tint on the left and a stuck pixel in the middle of the screen. Apple shipped a replacement that left straight from the factory in China. I received it and the screen is beautiful. First of many I've seen with no yellow tint. Uniformly white. I don't know if there was an issue with the initial batch or if this replacement is one of the few good units. But I'm now officially a happy camper.

Just out of curiosity, what's your serial letters?
(I know it's already been mentioned numerous times in this forum, the defect bears no relationship with the serial numbers)

I used to think this until I brought my defective iPads and compared them to the ones on display at the store. Clear difference.
