Apple had to encourage Roku to do this. There are many Roku owners who wouldn't think of buying an AppleTV (like me, for example). Of course, if you're not invested in products requiring Apple's walled garden, this news is "meh". I fired Apple a couple of years ago.
I would think most apple news would be meh if you're not invested. Not sure why you're on a macrumors site if you fired them years ago?
 
Sorry but Roku is garbage. A friend of mine just bought a Roku TV. They now require a $60 subscription to be able to use the TV for anything—even TV functions not utilizing Roku. I called the Roku support number in an attempt to help him and was informed by the billing manager that they just changed their Terms of Service to require a subscription. Needless to say, he is returning the TV.

That’s completely false information. I just bought a 2019 TCL series 8 Roku tv. There is absolutely no subscription required to use the Roku tv platform.

BTW, the series 8 is an awesome TV.
 
I mostly care when these little set top boxes and TVs will have AV1 hardware decoding support. If that is going to be the longtime standard, it seems a bit crazy to buy devices now that have only HEVC/h.265 and VP9 (roughly 7 year old codecs).
 
My wife is interested in Fitness+ but we don’t have an Apple TV and don’t want to buy the current model which is over three years old. Going with a new Roku will solve this problem, right?

Many others have pointed out that this is not true, but I'm going to be a little more detailed.

There is a very common scam where the scammers bought a bunch of misspelled domains that are close to the Roku URL, and so when someone mistypes the activation URL given by the device, they are convinced by said scammers that they have to pay a subscription. They also have off-by-1-digit phone numbers that they give out on the fake site. Sounds like your friend got taken for a ride and you believed them for some reason. But if you had called the actual Roku support number, or gone to the correct Roku support website, you'd see that no subscription is required for any Roku functionality.

Probably, but let's wait until all the updates roll out before you spend the money. My assumption is you'll be able to start the Fitness+ video on your phone or tablet, then AirPlay it to the Roku device, and it'll work just fine.

No it’s not. I just dealt with it yesterday with an older gentleman who purchased an Onn 24” TV from Walmart.

I was shocked but I used their website and called them because the TV popped an error message with a phone number to call Roku.

Call me a liar if you like. It was my first and last experience with a Roku TV.

This post is garbage. Roku is consistently rated at the very top among all the streaming devices.

As I said, I called the number, spoke to the billing manager, and was told my friend had to pay $60 for a subscription to Roku, I think they said it was for 5 years. He clearly stated they had changed the TOS recently.

I have hooked up Roku boxes to TVs for another friend without issue so this error code and phone number displayed on the Roku TV was a shock.

I think you got scammed (or attempted scammed). I just googled and there are some situations similar to yours. People posing as roku support and charging people. Numbers popped up on their screens etc. Roku doesn't charge a subscription or activation fee.


There are stories in that thread that sound exactly like yours.

Directly from the roku website. It clearly states that there is no charge for Roku. Unfortunately somehow how you got scammed. I'd call the bank ASAP and dispute the charge.

It is easier to scam/con someone than to convince them they have been conned/scammed.

For real. Happened to my dad last year and he's tech savvy for his age. He's still trying to convince himself somehow that it was legit. Hard to admit you got duped. This guy didn't actually pay anything, so he shouldn't feel too bad :) Just stop blaming roku.

Fortunately I told my friend not to give them any information. I did not give them any information either.

If indeed it was a scam, my problem is two-fold: 1) the number displayed on the TV. I was trying to troubleshoot on my phone. 2) it appears quite easy to redirect away from Roku’s site. That is something they do need to fix.

For now i’ll chalk it up to a scam, but how it occurred through their tv leaves me perplexed

And as I also stated with my Roku tv I bought a month ago, there is NO subscription fee to use the tv.

Was the TV bought new or used? And from where?

the new Ultra coming out has AV1. If they rolls back to previous years releases, I don’t know.

Yeah I'm not sure how that actually happens, but other people had the same experience with the number showing on the screen. Hacked at supply chain or 3rd party seller, bought, hacked, returned? Maybe there are remote ways to do it, I'm not that smart :confused:

AV1 hardware decoding requires new chips to do it. It can't work on older models. (They could do software decode but it would be horrible and slow and likely the old chips can't support it).

Media companies will obviously still need to continue parallel streaming h.264/h.265/vp9 for at least 10 years until av1 or other codecs are everywhere.

What are they subscribing to? Roku TVs do not require a subscription.
 
This is a great idea. At the end of the day, this won't prevent anyone that wanted to buy and Apple TV from buying one. In fact, prior to these sort of decisions people were turned off from Apple services because their hardware was so expensive. I'm a big Apple guy so I'll still buy the latest and greatest Apple TV, but not everyone is me. This allows more people to get into Apple's services without the added cost for their hardware.

Happened to a friend of mine a few months ago turns out it was his old unpatched router had been hacked into. Its DNS settings were remotely changed that sent legitimate domains to phishing sites. Id recommend checking out nextdns.io for the network you can review the logs and see where the traffic is going and it will block any of the phishing domains plus all of Rokus ads. It was the same scam $60 five years and they injected a site into the TV. Thats not even considering banking etc he did on his computer may have been compromised as well.
