I am looking for something close to what the original OP was asking for, but for a different purpose. Rather than starting a new thread, I thought I would ask on here. If I don't get responses, I'll try a different thread.

I work a lot of trade shows, and like to play videos, and show product info with an iPad to a TV monitor. I currently use an Apple TV, and use airplay to put my iPad info to the monitor. The problem with this approach is that I am in a convention center that does not have a private (or even a public) wifi network. Therefore, I have to bring along a wireless router that both the Apple TV, and the iPad can connect to, in order to work. I originally brought an airport express to generate the wireless network, but that would not work without a wired internet connection (which did not exist in the convention center)

My ideal solution would be a wireless device that could generate the wifi signal (basically being it's own webserver) that the iPad could connect to via airplay, and stream directly to that. I don't like needing to bring along my own wireless network for both the Apple TV and iPad to connect to.

Does anyone know of a way to do this wireless, without the need to bring along a seperate router just to create the wireless network?

Thanks

Maybe you can:
-get an iPad with cellular Data and tether it to create the Wi-Fi network...not sure if this will work
- tether your iPhone data (if you have one) to create the Wi-Fi network
- Buy a Mi-Fi device or equivalent (are small and portable)
- create a Wi-Fi network with a Laptop even it is jot connected to the web? Not sure if it will work for AirPlay...

I have done exactly this (albeit with audio only): my cooler radio and in both of my vehicles. Because there have been advancements since my implementation, I can assure you that it is now* audio and video capable (AirPlay mirroring). The solution: Raspberry Pi. It is a $35 computer that will accomplish what you need.

*At the time of posting, you will need to be accepted into the rPlay Beta software program. For more information on this, please visit http://www.vmlite.com/index.php?option=com_kunena&Itemid=158&func=showcat&catid=23

You will need the following:

Raspberry Pi - http://www.adafruit.com/products/998
WiFi Dongle that supports hotspot - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007BWFXYS/
SD Card (4GB or larger) - http://www.adafruit.com/products/102
HDMI cable - http://www.adafruit.com/products/608
Micro USB Cable - http://www.adafruit.com/products/592
USB Power Supply - http://www.adafruit.com/products/501

Hopefully rPlay will soon release it's software to the public. Until then, to do this you will need to have access to the beta software.

Let us know if you have success with this! I might try it out for myself in the near future.

As a teacher using airplay mirroring in the classroom, I can confirm that mifi devices can't support streaming of videos. You need a full powered router for that.

Google "ezcast dongle". It's some chrome cast replica which hooks to a tv, and can create its own wireless signal. You basically mirror the ezcast app from your device. Worth a shot.

I bought my brother-in-law a Chromecast for Christmas and he was ready to throw it in the trash can after about 5 minutes (he probably did). It just wasn't as user friendly as Apple TV. Great idea but implementation isn't all that IMO. Now if you want to watch Netflix its great for that.

As stated since the chromecast needs power such as a USB port or via the power adapter, I don't think its any more convenient than Apple TV. Its cheaper but thats were the benefits stop, you get what you pay for.

I have thought about getting one just for play maybe hack it or something.
