it might be integrated with Mail...

I've been getting this message ever since upgrading to Lion...

Pretty sure there are numerous methods of fixing that around the net, just google growl broken OSX. It should work.
I use Herald now anyway, much much better than GrowlMail.

They need to fix the codec used on teh ipad first, when I play real racing HD with airplay, the image is pixelated and not HD on my 720p lcd (37inch).
ipad2 -> airport express (11n) --> apple Tv. all within 3m of each other. its not what I expected along with ipad mirroring that creates a 4:3 border, hell this is 2011 and we live our life with 16:9, not 1984 with 4:3.

+1!

hope it will be able to stream from VLC to TV even higher resolutions. I have a lot of .mkv-files i wanna view on my TV.

This is great news for people using their computers to watch TV shows via the network websites, especially those only available with Flash. Now you can start a show in a browser window on your mac in one room, and Airplay it to any ATV2 in the house.

I had originally planned to get a mac mini to hook up to my TV, but the way they are rolling out the Apple TV connectivity, that is no longer necessary. Instead of another $600 + (for a mac mini), I can just use my current Macbook Pro and Airplay to however many Apple TV's I want!

(I hope Airplay mirroring on the mac comes with audio. It does on the iPad 2, so I'd expect it to.)

This sounds good and all but to me it seems it would only be useful with a laptop.

If I have my Mac in my office and mirror it to my HDTV in the living room how do interact with it ?

Unless they update the remote app to control the computer also. There's a thought.

There's a third party app called Mobile Mouse that odes exactly that with your iOS device. Much better with an iPad though.

I agree exactly. Please fix the current mirroring issues before moving on to this, iPad 2 AirPlay mirroring is disastrous at the moment. Laggy and crap resolution!

AirPlay streaming from QuickTime Player is a no brainer. I was really surprised that Lion didn't ship with it.

I borrowed an iPad to test out mirroring to see if it would work for "catch up tv" in the UK since no-one seems to want to let their Apps use normal Airplay (although you can now use airplay with iPlayer on the web). Streaming video did not work well at all, just kept stuttering, hoping it is software related - when using iplayer on the web with airplay that worked great!

To use iMessage effectively on a Mac, I think we need Notification Centre as well. The bouncing dock icon would do my head in otherwise :)

At the iCloud announcement, Steve "demoted" the Mac to being "just a device" instead of the center of your digital hub. So, it makes sense that as being just a device, it will have the features of all the other devices.

It never cesses to amaze me that people actually spend time looking into strings from application, beta software, etc.

As a father of two young kids: it is part contempt (for the wasting of time), part jealousy (for the wasting of time) on my part... :-S

I'm very surprised that Apple didn't just go with the name "iChat" for the iOS 5 IM function rather than "iMessage". "iChat" is so much of a cleaner, easy-to-say name that communicates the same point without sounding overly iPlayedOut.

Re: Airplay Mirroring.

Nice idea - I just wish they's put in multiple airplay outputs in iOS - what's the point of having a really cheap but effective sonos if you cannot multi-room play.

I know you can get round this using apple's remote app connected to itunes - this does play multiple rooms... but why can't they do the same thing direct from an iOS device?

Great news! iMessage will obviously be handy on the Mac, but if you can airplay any content to your apple tv, now THAT's something really awesome! Because that means you can effectively bypass all the limitations of the apple TV! One reason I never got the apple tv is that I can't play ALL my media through it. Video is the best example, like MKV files, etc., but now I can play it all through my mac, and simply send the video signal to the apple TV! Awesomeness, if this is true!

That's a very good point. I'm definitely looking forward to this!
