This seems to always happen when their are IOS updates. I remember is happening with both IOS 7 and IOS 8. You just have to wait for an update.

I've been facing the same issue.. even back on 8.4.1.. It seems hit or miss whether or not sleeping my iPhone or iPad if Airplay continues or stops working.. Only thing i've discovered a restart of the device seems to fix it.. eg: iPhone cuts Airplay off when you hit the power/sleep button.. Restart iPhone.. Airplay now continues to work after sleeping.

Try this and report back.

I just noticed that putting the iphone to standby with music through earphones also shuts off music now wtf.

Restarted my iphone fixed the music turning off when going standby.
Airplay shuts off when turning my iphone standby.

Same issue when playing music through Bluetooth. Even went up to Public Beta 9.1 looking for a fix, no luck.

I have the 6s Plus and I'm very frustrated. Trying to stream music to my Apple TV via Airplay and the music stops every time the screen goes off or if I turn it off myself with the power button. And this is even using Apple's own Music app, which one would think would be updated for iOS 9 and work properly with Airplay. So I tried Google Music and streaming to the Chromecast and the same thing happens... streams fine while the screen is on, but stops as soon as it goes off. Only workaround I found was to plug in phone and leave screen on... which is obviously not a practical solution when you want to put the phone in your pocket to stream music.

I tried rebooting and that didn't fix it. I even upgraded to iOS 9.1 Beta 2 and then Beta 3 and it's still doing it.

Hope it gets fixed soon.

Upgraded to iOS 9.1 official release today.

Boom.

AirPlay stops when the screen goes off/sleeps.

Oh Apple. Much fail.

Never had this before. iPhone 6s.

I am having the EXACT SAME ISSUE.... spotify stops playing on airplay as soon as the iPhone goes to sleep, have deleted spotify, re-booted the iphone and then reinstalled spotify.....reset and restarted the internet router. Don't know what else to do.
It happened on ios 8 as well but reinstalling Spotify always solved the issue! This is apple post Jobs era...what a pity!

Old iPhone 5 on 9.02 here and I am not having this issue but I have in the past. It seems random and it does seem to happen more frequently right after an update. Why does this keep happening?

Guys this time its not just spotify, its happening with Apple Music too!!! So there is a definite bug in the 9.1 update....it did not happen till 9.0.2......Hope 9.1.1 comes soon with a fix!

I have a bug report with Apple for this issue, so I'm hoping it gets addressed soon. It was doing it with Bluetooth as well, but that was apparently fixed with the final release of 9.1.

Hi!
I have the same issue but for me a workaround works. Please can you test this to see if it works for you too? I noticed that if I have a live photo on the lock screen - then music via airplay or whatever app via airplay will shut down. If I choose a still photo everything is working just fine. I'm on 9.1. I'm not sure but I think live photo worked in previous ios9.

Hey, you're awesome! That is indeed a workaround. I will update my Apple bug report to add this information as it should help them narrow it down. Seems like the Live Photos are causing the Airplay to stop. There is a similar issue if you are playing music on the phone and then open the camera app. It used to be if you were just taking photos, you could continue listening to music (such as via headphones), but with the new iPhone, any music will stop if you open the camera app, even if it's just on photos. In fact, even if you turn Live Photos off with the toggle in the camera app, you still can't play music with the camera app open.

Anyway, good find!

Turning off live photo for lock screen to still fixes the bug.

Come on Apple try harder please.

Yes this worked for me. Changing wallpaper to static one fixed the AirPlay problem. And I noticed the camera thing as well.

Dude you are a life saver....Live photos indeed is the issue here, but lets not forget that this is just a work around, Apple needs tu sort this out in their next update. Anyways its working thanks to you!!! Good job....Cheers

I am so thankful that a workaround was found for this issue! I updated my bug report with Apple and await a reply from the engineer who was following up with me on it. They couldn't reproduce the issue at first, but with this new information, I am confident they will be able to.

I saw that 9.2 Beta 1 came out, so I'm wondering if it might have been fixed already? I'll be updating when the public beta is available, so I can't say for sure right now.

I have also found this on my new iPhone 6s+. I found that trying to put the display to sleep turns the music off. Both blue, Apple TV and headphones. My Fix is to push the side power again getting to the non logged in screen with music controls showing, press play again and then turn the screen off and it continues to play. I hope this helps.
