I would be interested if i would be able to stream all of my own content to all of my iDevices from my own server at home, streaming everything from Apple's cloud will have monthly cost i'm sure and paying more then enough monthly as it is.

You can do that on the new Apple TV. Heck, you could do that on the old Apple TV. Or did you think only content bought from iTunes could be played on an Apple TV?

That's a mistake a lot of people seem to make and don't understand. Yes, your ripped DVDs and Blu Rays play on the Apple TV as well as HD video you record on your own cameras. Plus of course music and photos as well.

The only limitation is that it must fall within the specs of the device. For video that is mainly h.264 up to 720p/30fps in .mp4, .m4v, or .mov formats but there are others.

For the full list see the specs here:

If your video isn't in a supported format (.mkv, .avi, 1080p, etc.) you can convert it or possibly just Airplay it to your Apple TV from your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad using an app like Air Video which converts the video on the fly.

1. Who cares about streaming from the cloud to my ios device. Frankly, I would just be happy to be able to stream from my own library in iTunes to my iPhone4 (basically home sharing). Either over wifi or 3G, I currently use Orb, but it is wonky
Airfoil works great for audio (streaming from my Mac to my iPhone or iPad). Have not tried it for video yet.

And how could anyone who's watched OTA HD suggest eliminating the only video source that can come close to BD for quality?

Oh wait, the obvious answer is "the Kool-Aid drinking fan who believes the 'bag of hurt' lie"....

Not sure where you're going.

I enjoy my DirectTV (which I am watching HD feeds on at 720p/1080i) for my sports, TV shows, and many movies, etc.

I use my Apple TV system as a complement to that, renting the occasional HD movie from iTunes, but mostly watching either purchased movies or my DVDs/kids DVDs and listening to music streaming from my Mac through my stereo with a nice photo visual.

But I am not the rental market for TV shows. My DVR handles that just fine. I suppose in some way TV purchases/rentals would be cheaper than my DTV service on a monthly basis except for all the included movies, reruns, and live sports and news that my broadcast TV gives me.

I don't feel like AppleTV is going to replace my Satellite, though I know it does for some people. For me it adds to it. And the Apple ecosystem works quite well, is easy for my wife to use and has easily been worth the purchase price. I have a PS3, but I don't go nuts over Blu-Ray like some do. So we never use it for movies.

I remember the "PC on every desk in every home" world view. Now it's more like "all media, any device, any time...bought or rented" including cloud-served options. Me like.

I think he means using the iPhone to listen to music anywhere on 3G. Not on a home network. Airfoil can't do that.

all your videos, music, even radio streams from iTunes are available on apple tv (old and new) and other IOS devices.

They could have done iTunes-iPhone streaming years ago, but they didn't :(

Hopefully AirPlay is a sign that Apple now see the potential in such things and that's the kind of thing they are moving toward. Either that or AirPlay is just a gimmick to sell more ATV2's... I hope they have grander plans for it though. Time with Tell. In fact, the release of iOS4.2 will probably give us a sign of things to come.... Fingers crossed ;)

I feel your pain! Until Apple pull their fingers out their arses there is always Air Video. It's not perfect (what is?) but it got a lot better with the latest update which added better cacheing and Retina Display support.. Still doesn't play DRM stuff though :(

This is something I would be interested in, but since ipad still doesn't support adobe flash, no way I buy an ipad :/
The primary reasons I would buy an ipad are 2 flash content websites from tv channels where I live. tou.tv and webillico

Sounds similar to what Plex and the Plex iOS app do right now.

This sounds exactly like what the Plex boys are doing. I haven't tried there app yet, but I'll be excited to see a side by side comparison of these two...

Not sure why you would want to install the AirTunes Daemon on your iP4 to stream Airfoil audio when Airfoil makes AirTunes Speakers for the iPhone that allows you to stream any Mac audio from your computer to your iPhone or iPad.

I watched the Redskin's game on my iPhone with the free EyeTV Live3G app. Luckily, I didn't smash it by halftime.

At least 60% of my TV watch is live sports. And over half of that or more is not from local OTA channels. So I don't see a way I can personally get away from the above content sources.

Maybe not right now ... maybe not even 5 years from now ... but eventually, you'll be able to get the sporting events that you want directly from the league itself.

Think about MLB.tv and expand that to NFL.tv, NBA.tv, NHL.tv, PremierLeague.tv, PGA.tv, etc. That way, you get it directly from the source. OK, so maybe it won't quite work out this way, but perhaps for the lower tier sports, this could work. Leagues such as the IRL (IndyCar), WNBA, MLS, Lacrosse, etc could build a fanbase by having a yearly subscription instead of buying time on ESPN or Vs.

Anyways, if enough people get rid of cable/sat, you can bet that the major sports leagues will find a way to get their product to you and your iPad.

Maybe I wasn't watching the keynote closely a couple weeks ago but I could have sworn jobs already mentioned and demonstrated this ability between Apple Tv and the iPad. Maybe I just imagined it. Either way.

The NFL (thru DirecTV) finally allowed it's games to be available online this year for $350. Expensive, I know, but you get every game and you don't have to be a DirecTV customer.

If they can make it so that video being played on the DVD player app on my iMac can be streamed to my (soon to arrive) new Apple TV, I would _love_ this.

I could ditch the standalone DVD player cluttering my home theater space and simplify my setup.

There are DVDs that I've ripped b/c my kid watches them again and again, but periodically I pop in a DVD someone has brought over or that I already own from back when I purchased such things. Seems silly to have a device idle 90% of the time (standalone DVD player) when a perfectly good DVD player sits unused on the iMac.

No. He demonstrated streaming from an iPad to an ATV. This rumour is about streaming the other way; from ATV to an iPad... And hopefully from any iOS device to any other...

1. On the iPad, I believe you have to download the entire movie from iTunes before watching it. On the Apple TV, you can stream.

2. What if you want to watch a movie not in your house? In a coffee-shop, in an airport, in a car.

And if the video is on your iPad only? And not on the internet? Or you recorded a video with your iPhone 4?

arn

True, true, it makes sense like that. Plus I guess it's faster to stream something that's already on the iPad than have to connect and buffer on the Apple TV. But I didn't know you can't stream movies from the internet on the iPad!

Apple using Netlist Hypercloud in North Carolina data center

Netlist Hypercloud was qualified by Apple earlier this year. This is the only memory module that runs at 1333mhz fully stacked. If you invest, look it up ticker NLST or Netlist.com. You can look up the qualification under their news section.

This is going to be huge!! You heard it here first.

Bit like having Front Row on your iPad expect better, grown up Apple TV software! Now how about Apple TV software to replace crappy long in the tooth Front Row on the Mac, for those of us that use our Mac's a our bedroom TV? :)

I'll say it again... anything to rid of direct tv/comcast/etc...

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

I want aTV for my TPB content. SSSShhhhhhhh

It's BS that we have to pay for access to shows that have commercials. One or the other is fine, but both? I'll find a work around...

Sorry to dig up an old post but I am thinking about getting the Apple tv and have been trying the 'remote" app on my ipad.

When the next release of the ipad/airplay comes out, will I be able to play music/pics/video from my PC itunes to my ipad just like it can route to the apple tv?

That way I dont have to put everything on the ipad except for things I want to travel with.
