Summary: No ANC or transparency mode for 3rd Gen. But 3rd Gen have better battery life. And of course, no silicone tips for 3rd Gen. Both have wireless charging.
So, how long until they upgrade the Pros? On the fence on this since my original AirPods battery life is very short now.

I don't need noise cancellation and transparency mode is redundant considering the 3rd gen Airpods aren't sealing your ear canals.
I'm not trying to argue with you but not sealing your ears and transparency mode aren't exactly the same thing either at least not in the way airpods pro does it.

Without ANC and transparency mode it seems like it's not much of an upgrade over the airpods 2 IMO.

so 179 for AirPods 3 or 199 for AirPods pro? Kinda silly to not get the airpod pros. (they are currently on sale almost everywhere)
Not silly at all. (1) Some of us don't like the intrusive feel of those silicone tips in our ear canals. (2) Some of us like the abiltiy to hear external sounds while using. (3) No one wants to spend more money on a product than they need to.

Apple's own website:

Transparency mode lets outside sound in, so you can hear what's going on around you.

Because the Non-Pro Airpods don't make a tight seal in your ears, you don't need transparency mode, as you can still hear the world around you when using them assuming you don't have the volume set to maximum or anything.

Interesting... I didn't catch that. But I thought that steve jobs said that they didn't care about such things as canibalizing their own sales. Having the wireless charging case for the gen2 just makes sense. I'm not sure how keeping the case would cannibalize gen3 sales, but whatever...

As you wrote, the wireless charging case is a desirable feature -- and many 2nd gen airpod buyers willingly paid the extra $40 for the version with that feature ($159 vs $199).

I'm guessing some portion of the market is more interested in the convenience of the wireless charging than the additional capabilities of the 3rd gen mode -- and thus would pay the $179 for the 3rd gen to get the wireless charging, but would instead just buy the $129 gen2 if they included with wireless charging case.

i am too. my surprise was pleasant, until i realized that it was the low end version of 2nd gen...

Yep, would've already ordered a set of 2nd gens if they came with the wireless charging case.

Now I'm debating whether or not to order a set of 3rd gen. My ancient 1st gens finally failed 3-4 weeks ago and I've been getting along okay without them, as I use Aftershokz for running & cycling.

i would get a wireless version of gen2 from 3rd party reseller. i bought them for myself when my 1st gen stopped holding charge. i will probably buy another pair when these start to crap out, if i can find one. i recently had them swapped through apple care though, so i should hopefully be ok for a while.

At that point I'm within $20 of the 3rd gen model and IMHO no reason not to go with the 3rd gen (barring an individual fitment/comfort issue)

So basically Dynamic head tracking and wireless charging are the major differences between Gen 2 and 3. Not sure how important adaptive EQ is. Also not quite sure how immersive the head tracking would be without the seal.

So waiting for the gen 2 pros - next Spring hopefully - makes more sense to me.

If it's very short for you, like getting an hour charge or less from the earpieces, then probably not long. That was my experience. And the earpieces/case went fast once they got down to an hour. When they finally went, last month, the left earpiece would drop out after only 15 minutes.

At first, I wondered if it was a Bluetooth connectivity issue. After doing multiple resets and repairings, I thought that fixed it, until I realized the case was going dead as well. Or maybe that was the issue itself, that the case wasn't keeping a charge and so the earpieces weren't getting charged.

So, you'll probably need a new pair soon. If anything, the last month has shown me how much I hate using wired earbuds again, lol.

Are the Airpods Pro the same as the previous generation, just with a different case? I can't find this information anywhere.

Apple today announced that the third-generation AirPods are available to order starting today, with pricing set at $179 in the United States. Apple also said the second-generation AirPods with a wired charging case are remaining available for $129, down from $159.

The third-generation AirPods will begin arriving to customers and launch in stores on Tuesday, October 26, according to Apple.

The third-generation AirPods feature a similar design as the AirPods Pro, but without noise cancellation or silicone ear tips. Newly added Adaptive EQ tunes sound in real time based on how the AirPods fit in the user's ear for an optimal listening experience. Other new features include spatial audio with dynamic head tracking, IPX4-rated water and sweat resistance, longer battery life, and a MagSafe-compatible charging case.

It doesn’t even come with a surprise U2 album that can’t be deleted. This is total garbage and I won’t be buying. Gonna continue holding onto my PowerBook Duo 280c for now

Exactly. I have never liked the feeling of having anything made out of rubber inside my ears. The fact that rubber has a tendency to absorb stuff completely makes me avoid the Pros altogether. I keep my ears pretty damn clean but I'm sure the rubber ends from using the Pros would eventually begin to look dingy even from the natural oils on our skin. Yes, even our ear canals have that oil.

This is the main reason why I'm still using my 1st gen Airpods. They feel and fit my ear canals perfectly. Sticking something inside my ear canals with rubber doesn't appeal to me at all.
