Apple's standard AirPods offer active noise cancellation for an additional $50, bringing them closer to the AirPods Pro than ever before. But after a substantial update to the AirPods Pro this fall, which should you choose?

AirPods-4-vs-Pro-2-Thumb-1.jpg

The AirPods Pro 3 move slightly closer to the AirPods 4, adopting a hidden LED indicator and capacitive pairing button, but the device also adds new high-end features such as heart rate monitoring, along with significantly improved active noice cancellation and better earbud battery life.

Apple last year introduced a major update for its standard AirPods, with the earbuds gaining a more refined design for improved comfort, H2 chip, dust, sweat, and water resistance, 5GHz connectivity, a vent system for pressure equalization, Personalized Volume, Voice Isolation, a USB-C port, and "Siri" command support – just like the AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3. For an additional $50, the similarities with the AirPods Pro go even further with active noise cancellation, Transparency mode, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, support for Apple Watch chargers, and a speaker in the case for Find My.

Should you consider purchasing one of the AirPods 4 models, or do you need the higher-end AirPods Pro 3, which sell for $249? Our guide helps to answer the question of how to decide which of these sets of AirPods is best for you.

The standard AirPods are now very similar to the AirPods Pro, offering almost all of the same key features at a lower price point. As a result, the AirPods 4 should be the default choice for most prospective buyers. If you have AirPods Max, which already offer ANC, and are looking for an additional pair of headphones to use while working out or on the go, the AirPods 4 are also a good complementary choice.

You should only buy the AirPods Pro 3 if you are happy with its in-ear fit, which provides better sound quality and active noise cancellation, but can become somewhat uncomfortable and fatiguing during prolonged periods of use. While the AirPods 4 now offer ANC, it is not as effective as that of the AirPods Pro due to the lack of an in-ear fit, so if noice cancellation is your main priority, the AirPods Pro 3 are still the best choice – they deliver 4x better noise cancellation than the standard AirPods.li

In addition to better sound quality and ANC, the AirPods Pro 3 also offer slightly longer earbud battery life, Conversation Boost, touch controls for volume, MagSafe charger compatibility, Precision Finding with the U2 chip, and a lanyard loop, as well as hearing protection, testing, and aid features. The most significant new feature with the latest generation is heart rate monitoring during workouts, which provides an excellent option when not wearing an Apple Watch. Many users will be able to justify the additional $70 to get the AirPods Pro as a result.

The AirPods 4 are still a solid option for most average customers and will be better for those who do not like the AirPods Pro's in-ear silicone tips.

AirPods Pro frequently see hefty discounts on Amazon and other third-party retailers, so stepping up to the Pro version may be more worth it if you can take advantage of one of those deals. The standard AirPods also often see solid discounts, so it is always worth seeking the best price using our Deals roundup.

Loving the APP3s so far! Without any tweaking or even testing different sizes of ear pieces, the new Pros are subtly but significantly improved over the APP2s. The fit is better, seeming more natural and yet more secure. And sonically they offer better ANC during my daily urban bike commuting where I feel improved awareness of environmental sounds while also hearing content better. I am very pleased with my decision to upgrade to the APP3s.

I have the 4 ANC model, is it just me or with ANC off does the surrounding ambiance get boosted? I tried them for the first time yesterday, coming from the standard 3’s, and it’s almost as if Transparency mode is enabled and boosting surrounding sounds - almost airy sounds, but Transparency mode is not enabled. Maybe there’s a firmware update that corrects this, I don’t know, but it was horrible and I will be returning them and sticking with the standard 3’s for the gym.

The Adaptive Mode on the AP4 + ANC is good, but weird - it seems to automatically rebalance the ANC and sound volume on the fly.

There's also the "Connversation Awareness" setting - if that's on, it will much more aggressively change both eh output volume and absence volume. I had to turn it of as I sometimes mutter to myself, and even that drastically alters the sound momentarily.

Next AirPods article will be a "how to clean out earwax" tutorial. 18 hours later "What to expect from AirPods 5"
To be fair, given some of the complaints on here, the "how to clean out earwax" is very much needed.

No, Apple isn't destroying your AP quality with every update, you just need to clean your bloody AirPods.

I did not realize that the AirPods 4 ANC do not have the U2 chip for location tracking.

A couple of days ago I used Find My for the first time to locate my AirPods and was very disappointed how imprecise the positioning was.

On mine I have transparency disabled and they are perfectly fine, not sure why you're experiencing this.

Word of caution: AirPods 4 will NOT stay in your ears. I had to return them. I had no issues with the original AirPods.

Is it possible to test the fit in store? I had the originals but after about a month or so, the right pod never fit properly. I wanna give them another try because the Sony's I have now have a lot of interference in NYC.

Depends on the person. I've been trail-running (so a lot of jumping) for the last several months with my ANC AirPods 4, and they haven't fallen out yet.

Just turn off ""Conversation Awareness" - it's a toggle in the AirPods settings.

Not sure what that "lossless audio with vision pro" means. Any speaker or headphone is not lossless. What they do is take the electrical signal and turn it back into sound waves the ear can hear. The lossless audio is the digital file that is covered into an electrical signal a speaker can use. Typically that conversion happens when the decoding happens upstream by the software. This is akin to saying my car speakers are lossless because I'm playing a track from TIDAL that is lossless. That is incorrect. My TIDAL app on my phone is converting the lossless signal back into an electrical signal that my speakers can use to make sound, just like any other source.

Perahps Apple is limiting the ability of the airpod pro 3 to vision pro? That does not make sense because I'm sure the airpod pro 3 will be able to play my losses streams from TIDAL. This is misleading at best.
