Nice idea. But would require enormous development of the Translate app. In its current form it’s about the level of an MVP for rudimentary translation.
The best translation service in the World is DeepL.
Fails on basic vocabulary let alone grammar. For example, it doesn’t know the difference between woman and wife in Spanish.

If I knew the Ray-Bans worked I'd buy them in a minute. I travel to Asia often and need help translating without holding my iphone up to their lips.
It didn’t for me. My point was that Microsoft Translate is better than Apple and Google.
My personal opinion is that DeepL is by far the best translation tool.
As for Apple’s translation ( piece of garbage )—honestly, I wouldn’t even take it seriously, especially for someone who is a polyglot, since it doesn’t support a wide range of languages. And as far as I know they don’t even have a macOS app 🤷🏻♂️
You are absolutely right. I have studied translation tools very intensively and have also come to the conclusion that DeepL is rightly the world market leader. philstubbington simply has no idea and doesn't know the tool well enough.

Apple Translate is practically useless for anyone who speaks multiple languages. In general, Apple has ignored its international audience so much in recent years that, especially when it comes to its translation app, I find it impossible to trust a single word.

Meanwhile, GPT and other AI tools now even offer translations for Ancient Greek and Latin—just wow!

My iOS device has multiple languages installed, yet when I use my Apple Watch, I can’t simply start speaking and have the system recognize the language automatically. Even worse, when I receive a message in an unsupported language like Greek (yes, Apple continues to ignore many languages), my watch reads it out character by character instead of as actual words.

I agree. Microsoft Translator is quite good. It's not perfect by a long shot, but I used it recently and was able to understand everything said, even if the translation wasn't quite correct sometimes. It was close enough to get the gist.
To be fair, when I just tried it, it did at least offer some alternatives ("mi esposa" instead of "mi mujer") that were correct. The problem is someone would need to know enough of the other language to know if the translation was or was not accurate. Another explanation: maybe the developers say, "my woman" instead of "my wife". ;-)
I've found that ChatGPT does an excellent job at translating. It's not perfect, but is the most accurate tool I've found so far.
It can't even handle English properly. Siri has absolutely no capabilities when it comes to context, except when it pretends to by erroneously auto-correcting previous words whilst typing.
Siri pronounces the word "reading" - you know, like one would do with one of those garbled text messages - as "redding" as it thinks - despite contextual clues and lack of capitalisation - that the only word "reading" which exists is a town in Berkshire.
It's mainly because of the above that I have no faith Siri's "thinking" capabilities - I don't trust Apple's translation tools and have AI disabled everywhere possible. Pity, really.
