True, I hadn’t realized that. My transit tunnels don’t have wifi so that means you’ll have to use another device to do just about everything with these and that greatly reduces their functionality.

If Siri is going to be need to even get basic function on accessories its about time that Apple has in phone Siri commands for those basic commands.

Won't be a problem for me since changing tracks and volume are a cinch on my Apple Watch. It's a great substitute for inline controls, and maybe that was Apple's intentions. Another fitting piece that further raises value of the Apple Watch in the eco system (like auto-unlock for Mac) and I think it's pretty brilliant.

I thought what a great design...then I imagined biking down a long hill at 40mph and one popping out onto the road. Maybe the cheaper beats will be a better choice for exercising.

Even worse is imagining oneself falling off of a bike going 40 MPH and losing them.

If you're truly even considering them, most stores offer at least two weeks to try before returning. I get it though. $160 isn't exactly nothing.
If you just want to check the fit, try the lightning EarBuds that come with your new iPhone 7, or the original EarBuds. If you have problems with the fit, don't even bother ordering the AirBuds.

As far as how well they'll actually stay in there if you, say, go for a jog, it's hard to say, though the buds could certainly benefit for some sort of anchoring system
Scotch tape.

So you're saying that Apple has not refined the design with this latest release?

I'm sure there's improvements did but the fact is these won't fit everyone's ear. It's not hate, it's just fact. As it relates to me, majority of the EarPods don't work for me so it's not just Apple and I'm sure others here and outside the forums experience the same.

No playback controls/gestures on the AirPods themselves makes this a non-starter for me.
Let's wait and see. Perhaps they have other gestures besides the double tap for Siri. The Bragi Dash, for example, uses its accelerometers to recognize if the person nods or shakes their head to accept or reject incoming calls.

lol you're afraid of not hearing the fire alarm when you're on a Treadmill? Or someone screaming at you while you're on the bike path on the beach? Or maybe you're afraid you won't hear a mountain line scream at you while on a hike? I just want to make it clear what safety issue you're talking about.
Why do you play music why doing these activities? Take your treadmill example, first I like to concentrate on the activity. Thinking about my routine, how I am doing, etc. Some call it maximizing your workout, less distractions. You are correct on the fire alarm, or a major event you will mostly hear the event. However, your reaction time in many cases will be slower, delay in hearing the mountain lion is not good. Example, a major problem with driving, distracted by texting etc causes slow response times. For me, maximizing my workout, is why I am there in the first place. Same with the other activities. Just my opinion and curious as to why others need music, which you did not answer.

Those wireless airpods should of came with the iPhone instead of people buying them separate. Not Cool Apple!!!!!!
Agreed, at a minimum with the iPhone 7 plus, as a potential driver for the higher end device. Although as I type..., since they dumped the jack port, yes, these should have been the default headset with any iphone 7 to encourage adoption and more specifically to stand behind their courage claim... Maybe next year is where we will see the end of including wired headset since Apple believe's so strongly in a Wireless/Mobile world...

It seems clear to me that most iPhone users really don't give a damn about sound quality. Bluetooth is merely adequate tech for headphones- if you don't mind lag or short range. And I guess I have to be ok with that- Apple hath spoken, I guess. For people in my field who use their iPhones as mobile studios, that jack was useful. Loads of peripherals use 3.5mm, and the ones that use Lightning, well, you could monitor sound using wired phones and a jack. Now? Well, back to the drawing board. Or buy new peripherals when they come out- because the budgets we have are infinitely flexible. Use a laptop? Sure, because that's as portable as a phone, yesiree.

I know, whine more, right? Because Apple has a Vision. But that doesn't help with my work right *now*.

I say put caution to the wind and have the 'courage' to take a leap in the dark and buy a set. You've already budgeted them into the cost of your "new" iPhone 7. Ok so far? Good.

Now. Ask yourself if you can still justify forking out a total of > £700 for the same-looking 32gb phone with headphones you didn't really plan buying and ... (and here's the really magical bit) ... if you can justify all that disposable dosh .... the chance of you losing the wee MHDs (MicroHairDryers) is pretty negligible because you'll be too worried to let them leave your sight! Back of the net!.

If you're still worried about losing the tiny blighters, I would recommend tethering them to your phone. Perhaps with wire or such? Or keep them in their charger-case thing? Come on. You've spent enough on the phone. You can't risk losing these wee beauties.

Yes its true, the company's new AirPods will be significantly more expensive in the UK when they go on sale in the beginning of October. In the US they will cost $159 (£119), while in the UK they will be £159 – a £40 difference.

But don't let that put you off. You can't have water resistance and a conventional headphone socket apparently. And who are we to argue? Let's rejoice. Embrace and accept the £££ whack. And enjoy the better camera. And haptic home button. And ... Oh no. What am I saying! I've just gone and spent £800 on the same jazzed up phone with a set of ear things I didn't even want. Damn you keynote! You're always so persuasive.

Just wait 'til my missus finds out what Ive done with the family budget. She's gonna kill me!

Yeah, but it depends on what kind of ear you have. Apple ear pods always slip out of my ears. They just don't stay in. Maybe it's the shape. Maybe it's because they dont have a rubber coating like other ear buds. Either way, they always fall out of my ears. And without an attached wire, I'd definitely lose them for sure. At $159 a pop, thatd be real expensive to keep replacing. I much prefer the around the ear style. But I doubt Apple will make such a design for their wireless. I love Apples design aesthetic, but in this case, at least for me, it's form over function. Sigh

Guess you'll have to use the free included 3.5mm adapter then. Sorry to say.

They not only included a set of Lightning headphones in the box with the 7, they gave the adapter for normal headphones. Expecting them to give you the wireless headphones in addition is beyond belief - what other provider boxes wireless headphones with their phone?

What I'd like to know is if they'll be capable of better sound quality than standard BT headphones, perhaps due to the chip, or other modifications to the wireless connection?
Yes, Apple is using a higher quality BT connection (similar to AptX) but it's not HD or even CD quality, just better than standard BT.

Since Lightening is a data port I wonder if an lightening hub and a dongle might solve your problem? The whole point of using the port is for usages like yours - could it be a simple as just putting the monitoring that used to be through the 3.5mm in its own data channel in the Lightening port?

Yep, that can run either my phones- or the peripheral. So how to do both?
Can you elaborate on the use-case you're describing?

Edit: NVM I see what you're saying now.

I foresee plenty of third parties coming in to fill the void here, which isn't a bad thing in my book.

Could be- I'll be finding out, won't I? Off to see what I can do when I or one of my coworkers is issued a 7.

Yeah they don't work for me unfortunately. :(

Trying and returning Ear Buds is a dubious business. I would never want to buy something that might have been in someone else ears. Its no different than buying and returning underwear just not done.
The returned product is ever going to be sold as new. Neither is the underwear for that matter. Do whatever you feel is best. I take full advantage of return policies if I don't like what I just bought.

Guess this is one of the cases where people need more than one Lightning port - or a way to pass-through information with a special adapter. Not sure how that's going to work out in the future.
