On Airpods pro both gens, active noise cancellation is incredible. No it does not allow you to hear quick noises better it is just best at drowning out continuous droning noises like an engine. If I have music playing it pretty much blocks everything. Allows you to listen to music in loud environments without turning up so loud it will damage hearing. Great for flying, or while mowing the yard. I’ve tried the Airpod Max ANC also and its really good I just prefer earbuds. Airpod Pros are 100% worth every penny. Max are as well if they correct the most recent change they made to ANC.
Apropos of nothing, as much as I love the airpod pros, I prefer to mow the lawn using my 3M Worktunes. It may not make 100% objective sense, but for something like a mower which is VERY loud and VERY continuous, I'd rather just straight up block the noise rather than use ANC. Now that I think about it, I've become very specific in my choice of headphones for different activities. 3M's for yardwork, Power Beats Pros for working out, Airpods Pro for casual/everything else, and old Airpods 2 as a back up.

My Airpods Pro 1 died not long before 2 came out. So I bought Airpods Pro 2 as soon as they came out. With 2, I've felt the wind noise ANC to be much inferior to what I was used to. I don't know if it was the new hardware or new firmware that could have affected both 1 and 2, but in any case, wind noise ANC on Airpods Pro 2 seems much worse than with Airpods Pro 1 prior to 2 being released. Unfortunately, wind and car noise are two primary ANC uses I have (running outside).
One of my colleagues returned his APP2's and went back to his 1's as he said it just wasn't as good. I'll have to ask him about his experience now he's back. I still feel mine have changed in quality.

Apple's $550 over-ear AirPods Max headphones are less effective at blocking out outside noise when using Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) following their latest firmware update, according to results from a detailed audio test.

A recent update to testing by RTings.com reveals that the AirPods Max ANC "blocks out a bit less noise between the mid-bass to high-bass range" after the 4E71 firmware update, which was released in May. "When it comes to the mid and treble ranges, this firmware update has slightly changed the level of isolation, but it's a relatively minor difference," RTings.com said following its test.

The decrease in ANC effectiveness was highlighted in an article by The Verge last month following months of discussion and complaints from AirPods Max users on Reddit and other discussion forums.

It's unclear why Apple adjusted the ANC performance in the latest update or if it plans to restore ANC effectiveness in a future update. Apple occasionally updates the firmware on AirPods Max and other AirPods models to deploy new features, fix bugs, and tweak performance.

Apple has been providing developers with beta versions of AirPods firmware since WWDC earlier this year, with the most recent beta version having been released earlier this month, but there's no word on whether there are any changes to ANC performance in the update.

It happened to both of my AirPods Pro and Max (both first generation) and made me think they are doing this to make you buy the new one
