AirPods Max Battery Drains Only Slightly Faster Outside of Case

@jclo mind checking on this and updating the article if confirmed?

This is inaccurate. It isn't a power off button, it's a button to turn OFF noise cancellation and transparency. See image.

According to the article it drains 1% per 4 hours when in the case, so that’s 6% in 24 hours, that’s a little over 2 weeks for your battery to go from 100% to 0% when not in use. That wouldn’t happen with an actual off button.
I have the AirPods Max here at my house, and have tested this. It doesn't drop 6% in 24 hours. After the first 3% of not being in the case, it drops 0% over the next 12+ hours.

If you put them in the case at 70% battery at 10pm, when you take them out of the case at 10am the next day, they're still at 70%. Just like a power button.

But the internet would be such a boring place if we didn't have people complaining about products/features they don't own or likely will not buy.
I'd be very interested these headphones but some of these noted issues (lame case, excessive weight, no power-off, dirt-sucking mesh headband) certainly cause me to pause. I'm not going drop that kind of money out of the gate. Hearing some of the drawbacks helps me make a better buying decision.

Put a power button on it and it won't drain at all. What a stupid design.
Yup. And since all the case does is add minimal protection and slow the battery drain, you might as well just set them on a desk and plug them in overnight, and not mess with the case.

I’ve got to side with the naysayers on the AirPods Max. They absolutely look cool and iconic but the increasingly high price point combined with a worthless case and no way to turn them off to save power seems like a way too much form over function for me. Yes I know Apple underestimated demand so maybe these will continue to sell like hot cakes. Time will tell but this feels more like HomePod and less like Apple Watch, AirPods, etc to me.

I wish they would go into the ultra low power state after say 30 minutes of inactivity then to get them to 'turn on' again just press either the Digital Crown or the transparency button. This seems like an intuitive and simple way of getting them to save battery while also being simple to use and wouldn't affect how they currently work with the case.

The battery loss outside the case isn't drastic but it would certainly add up and reduce the useable life of the battery over years of this, if I was traveling over several days I could see this starting to cut into their useable battery life.

so with the lack of a power off function, you will have continuous battery drain, as little as it might be - thus requiring more charging compared to having a power off.
Apple told us that they did not include a power brick for the iPhone 12 for environmental reasons. That argument now contradicts what they've done with the AirPods Max requiring more than necessary charging. As little as that might be on an individual basis - it does have an impact, like it or not.
Apple, please get your logic straight across all products!

I dont even understand what the carry case is from the pictures, cant make out how it works. Design fail from Apple. What about a proper case with padding as you get with other high end headphones?

Doesn’t the FAA require all radios to be turned off during flight? I know people do it and I know it’s probably harmless, but still technically would it not comply with FAA rules to fly with AirPods Max?

This is such a non-issue. Everyone here charges their iPhones, iPads, Macs, Apple Watches, etc. every day or two so charging one more thing every few days is no big deal.

Also, I've owned several OE headphones and I've not once used the cases they came with because they're way too bulky and would take up too much space in my suitcase or backpack. While I've seen many complaints about the Airpods Max case, they look far more functional to me... they're light, doesn't add bulk, and protects the aluminum ear cups from getting scuffed... something I would actually use!

While it remains to be seen, I'd wager that many more people will use them than the cases that come with most OE headphones, and prove once again, that Apple knows more about design and functionality (or at least puts a lot more thought into these things) than the competition, reviewers and internet commentators.

It doesn't need a version 2 to be addressed if Apple wants to do anything about it. A firmware update can enable the secondary button to put it to sleep on a long press (a function not currently mapped to anything). Don't count on Apple making a version 2 for probably 3-5 years. They may introduce a new charging mechanism in the time being as a separate accessory, or an option at purchase. They may even introduce new colours for the ear cups, or new materials.
I hope they do the firmware update for that! That be great. :) Still would of liked the U1 chip in there. You really think it will be 3-5 years for a revision? They don’t need to change the entire design...

I used it on one phone call and nobody complained. Though I was annoyed that I couldn’t hear myself talk because of the noise cancellation - I had to hit the button to toggle it into transparency. Would be nice if it took care of that for you, since the phone knows you are on a call and hearing yourself talk would be helpful.
I bit the bullet, bought them a couple of days ago hunting down store pick up availability. Every hour I use them I like them more.
Microphone quality is actually very very good I think. Colleagues say that with AirPods Pro it was “good”, with these ones they say “a lot better, crystal clear”. I did this without camera feed faking some “fixing some computer mic thing” as I’m pretty sure it would raise some eyebrows (they do make me self-conscious a bit).

And transparency mode is bonkers, the change from/to transparency <-> anc is always jaw dropping.

What you say about going to transparency mode automatically makes A LOT of sense... even better, if it is too noisy outside keep it noise cancelled (so that the user can hear clearly the call), if the outside sound feels like a normal office environment setting then go transparency to have a natural call. All the waveforms info are definitely already there.

EDIT: small update, on topic, I turned them on and haven’t charged them at all for the last two days. I think they will last easily three or four days a charge for me (infinitely better than the ever declining AirPods Pro battery wise).

That’s never applied to headphones.

been a while since you’ve flown eh? They ask you turn off cell service but modern planes have Bluetooth entertainment centers you run with your wireless phone, and on board Wi-Fi to connect with the internet. So. No.

no power button, no proper case, no UI chip - not interested

And as ridiculous as the price is, the price is not my major concern.

Don’t you just love a public beta test? My $25 headset has a power button although no boobies case was included.

You should definitely be put in charge of all product design decisions at Apple. They haven’t be able to make much money with their existing designs, none of which are very popular or sell very well.
Apple has screwed up many times before...add these headphones to the list. Not having a complete shutoff feature is pretty stupid for a product so expensive.

Looks like a similar design principle they applied to the AirPods and PowerBeats Pro. There's no way to turn them off, and the only way to "deactivate" them is to put them in the case, where they would charge.

The only difference here is that the case really is just a carrying case, and it doesn't supply power. I wonder if this can be solved with a firmware update?

I know, old habits die hard. It won't be long before it seems silly to turn headphones on and off once you get used to devices not having power buttons, like iPhone and iPad... devices that put themselves to sleep and wakes up with a tap.
