I cant tell what you’re saying here. I think your statement means they aim for 33% margin, i.e. pricing to cover cost of production and operations then a third margin. But I do not get how you have written it.
you got it - this is mentioned on every earnings call - Apple gross margins are usually:
hardware - 32.3/33% and services 63.5/64.5%

Every time is see “AirPods Max,” I cringe. I’m sure they will sound amazing and will be great at noise cancellation. I just can’t wrap my mind around this “strategy.” Had they priced it for $399 or less, they would have dominated the Bose/Sony market IMO. I also could have overlooked the lack of a case and a way to power them off. $550? Not sure who they're targeting here. I doubt they will be $200-$275 better than Sony or Bose offerings. Even if they are “better,” it’s still a stretch given how much more they are.

On a side rant, can we get rid of the “Max” nomenclature? “Max” is just so cheesy, it’s like Apple is letting an 8 year old come up with these names. “Super mega-awesome Pro-Max XDR PROMAX Super Edition Plus!”

I guess another rant, why are these even called AirPods? The first thing I think of when I hear “AirPods” is compact, wireless, in ear headphones, not massive, heavy cans.
I wish Apple would just make their Pro lineup and than SE versions. Keep it simple.

I think they missed a trick with AirCans.

I don’t think you’ll ever buy them at any price. Some of the items you listed are never going to be changed, whether it’s Revision 2 or 20. :)
I don’t need them all to change, just some of those points. I can even likely deal with them being unprotected by that smart case, not folding, etc. but I can’t really deal with the uncustomizeable 2 hour autooff, lightning, or lack of auto detect ears after it was rumored for so long.

What is so hard about letting us customize it to between 5 minutes and 2 hours, and include an auto-on when wear is detected? Or did you just want to post a smarmy :)?

:)

And yet I'm typing this on my first gen M1 MacBook Air.

Everything "just works." Incredibly fast. Especially the SSD. And I can go two days before needing to charge. It's dead quiet and cool. A far superior laptop compared to my 2017 MBP, in all aspects.
The emphasis on GOOD & ENOUGH. The next generation will be better. :)

I wonder what your view is on Stereo speakers such as the KEF LSX which are Bluetooth speakers that can be used with the Mac and cost $1000? You surely think these aren’t worth the price tag whether huh? I’m being sarcastic of course as they are worth every penny

Everyone complaining about the price... they're actually cheap for "high end" cans. Especially given the build quality. Also, don't forget it's a statement piece, if you're complaining about the price, they are not for you.

Why do you think you can't fold them for travel? Why does the case make them look like a purse? They are meant to be seen duh!!!!!

You said “Here is exactly why I’m waiting for Revision 2 on these.” I thought that meant “these are the things that need to be in Revision 2 for me to buy them”. But, yeah, if these are just some of the things you’d like to see change, and only 8,6,2 and 1 are REQUIRED to change... actually, I still think you may end up not buying them because it seems like Apple plans to stick with lightning. And, auto-detect ears was always a curious rumor to me. Almost like the kind of thing you’d tell someone internally to find out if THEY are the one that’s leaking... not an actual feature.

You think they’ll be sticking with Lightning on their iPhones even for the next 5 years? Man, if that’s really what they do that’s a bleak future.

And yes, really my only hard requirement is no lightning, or failing that, an alternative like some kind of wireless charging dock for them...

You’re right about that. If the lightning port never goes away on these, I’ll never buy them. Sad but I have to stand up for my principles. I think at this point it’s reasonable to expect USB-C from them, or even some brand new port. Anything but lightning really. I’m not enamored with Apple pushing USB-C or wireless on literally everything except this product alone. This is now the only product they make that can only be charged via lightning besides the non-wireless AirPod case, but those at least have the option for wireless at an upcharge.

Here is exactly why I’m waiting for Revision 2 on these.

$550 is fine if they didn’t have these glaring flaws:

1) It has no USB-C... I’m done with Lightning and refuse to buy any more products with it besides iPhones (and even on iPhone I’m sick of it, but thankfully iPhones can be wirelessly charged, AirPods Max can’t).

2) It has NO form of auto-off besides losing 2 hours of charge first (source: mkbhd 1st look). No on/off button to alleviate this is even more baffling on such a spacious product.

3) The smart case offers no actual protection unlike the included XM4 hardshell case (which also has convenient slots for the included 3.5mm to 3.5mm analog wire, the included usb-c to usb-a charger, and the included airplane adapter, and also the XM4 case has a very large external mesh pocket on the outer shell for even more carrying capacity).

4) They don’t include the analog wire like the XM4s do. Since they claim to be about audio fidelity, what is more fidelous than a wired connection for the real audio engineers/creators? For $550 no detachable wire nor a decent case???

5) They are so heavy that they move around on your head with a delay (see daringfireball review).

6) They have a lightning port!! This is so egregious it’s worth mentioning twice.

7) Absolutely no fast charging, seems to have been confirmed by multiple reviewers beyond the abysmal quoted 5 minutes for 1.5 hours, even though the included charger is lightning to usb-c, there is still no fast charge as confirmed by reviewers.

8) L/R interchangeability/ear auto detect is nowhere to be found???

9) Lack of touch controls on outside of cans is suspicious, like they rushed this version out... they could’ve at least copied XM4’s palm to cup creating immediate temporary transparency mode. Instead you have to press a button to switch to Transparency, and press the button again to switch back.

10) The H1 chip is not there yet. I have a 2020 Intel MBA with Big Sur and my AirPods Pro with H1 chip still can’t auto detect when I switch to my Mac with 100% regularity (and yes I have a good and fast Wifi connection). I often have to fiddle with the AirPods and sound settings to get that instant “seamless” connection. I’m at the point where I’d rather just connect manually with Bluetooth since at least it won’t create an insane nightmare scenario by randomly deciding to not work. Just the other day I had to reset and repair my AirPods just to get my 2020 Mac on Big Sur to recognize them. Took 2-5 extra minutes to diagnose the problem.

11) Nearly no transportability. The XM4’s fold up easily and nicely into their included hard case to the size of a man’s hand 🤚. The XM4’s are surprisingly small when put into their case, I was shocked. AirPods Max don’t shrink in size in any meaningful way. Again, look to the “smart” case to see that no thought was given to a more compact means of storage.

There, for all these reasons I’m spending my money elsewhere and waiting for them to transition to a better revision of AirPods Max. I don’t mind waiting 2-5 years for AirPods Max 2 on the XM4 that I just got for $278 which includes so many features and accessories I won’t even bother to list them.

I love Apple, but these are a ridiculous proposition due to multiple design flaws/compromises.
It sounds like you already own the perfect product for you!

Why bother waiting/complaining since the headphones you already have are so great?

Lol... if you have to ask this kind of question, you don’t understand Apple fans.

We WANT to buy everything they make, so when they put out something with questionable decisions we have to ask ourselves “is this the time I vote with my wallet?” Case in point, the hilariously priced $129 Duo Charger, or the $399 wheels, or their expensive MacBooks between 2015-2019/20 that they sold with a very faulty keyboard.

Sometimes Apple messes up and it’s important to call them out on it instead of ignoring or being purposefully silent about their mistakes.

This is an aside, but I like my duocharger. I dont consider it a mistake at all. It beats the competition for travel by a wide margin (besides price lol). I do agree they are not for everyone, or maybe even for many, but for those that need/want them, they are great. Just saying.

You are taking some flak from others over your reasoning, and I find myself agreeing with you on several items but in the end saying, good enough for me. So agree to disagree.

But I wanted to thank you for a very well thought out list that we can at least discuss. 95% of people these days just throw out their biased opinions without anything to back them up. Your list made me think. So thank you.

I agree I am going to miss the palm to cup momentary transparency gesture, its great for those that sit in the emergency row and need to interact with flight attendants. And there is no defending that case. But other than that, I am looking forward to seeing what they can do.

My personal preference would have been USB-C as well, but its not a deal breaker. What is your beef with lightening anyway? Sincerely curious. From an engineering standpoint it works great, is solid, and has never let me down. If your objection is marketing, i.e. evil apple for pushing its own technology... shrugs. Okay. Doesn't bother me. Apple is entitled to make a profit. It may also be there was already a lightening to 3.5 mm jack adapter from Apple and they didnt want to confuse things with a USB-C to 3.5 mm jack adapter. If there was zero way of getting a wired signal, that might have been a deal breaker.

As for fast charging... eh, no thank you. fast charging means degrading your battery faster. You dont get something for nothing. I dont use it even on devices that have it, but then, I am good at planning ahead. I have never ran out of power with any of my devices.

I think they’ll be sticking with lightning for Beats and AirPods Max, certainly. For the iPhone, I think they’ll stick with it but, because it’s theirs, it can do whatever they want it to. It could stay around and become a data only port, just for connecting audio or other devices where low latency is important, but charging becomes exclusively a wireless situation.

Lightning is also required for Beats Solo headphones and Beats Pill+. It COULD be that they don’t want to build USB-C Power Delivery compliance into these products, no idea.

Definitely feels like there was some sort of two-step embargo here -

a) You can talk about the headphones, how they feel, packaging, etc

(units ship)

b) ...now you can talk about how they sound

I suspect the performance will be decent or even better. But this delay in reviews of how they sound is really frustrating.

How many of the existing reviews did you read/listen too? Almost all of the ones I perused had something to say about sound quality. Even iJustine! LOL. Granted the majority of a 'review' described the form/packaging in detail, but that is why they were called 'unboxing.' It's meant to be clickbait to get you to read and all they can talk about is the superficial, because they are rushing to get content out, not any sinister conspiracy. And they almost all say a more detailed review is forthcoming. My guess is a lot of them are waiting for what the professionals say so they can reference that, or copy it. And the professionals take time.

btw Apple had long sold out of inventory by the time the unboxing occurred.

Most of the unboxings I read/watched commented that the noise cancellation was even better than Bose or Sony and the sound quality seemed more even than them as well. The folks commented in a very favorable fashion. But it is going to take the professionals days to put together more objective measurements.

mine too, hoping to see some movement today, although, historically the Apple Shipping status doesn't always match the actual tracking, my iPhone 12 Pro Max as preparing to ship, but on fedex it was already in Kentucky.

People in the Pro Audio Field aren’t getting these. To be frank with you, nearly no one goes car shopping for an Accord and than thinks “what’s another twenty thousand dollars!” Another 20k is another Accord. While I understand that Apple can typically charger a premium due to an earned reputation, that does not make them immune from making poor pricing decisions. Plus, this only works if Apple is going after the “pro” market. They’re not, this is aimed at Bose/Sony and a few others. That’s where my confusion is in regards to Apples strategy.
This is true. Tesla buyers are not accord buyers. Tesla poaches BMW. These are cars for rich white people who were going to buy a Ferrari but bought a Tesla roadster (making the subsidies on them just a cruel joke on blue collar Americans who are now funding the sports cars of the rich). I don’t know who will buy these headphones but they have money to burn.
