I bought the Sony XM4s and those are pricey. I dunno about the Max. I thought $450 tops. Dang.

This will sell as well as that $1500 watch they were hawking a few years ago. Because the case is different and it says “edition”.

it’s not Gucci or Pravda. These things will be half price by Q3 2021...

These are a hard pass for me. Headphones are one of the biggest tech scams in the industry. I even consider $250 headphones insanely over priced. I DJ and work in video production and have always used a set of Sony $65 headphones that sound amazing, rich and clear enough to mix vocals and other frequencies. They finally broke and I bought a off brand pair on Amazon for $35 that use a cord for realtime or bluetooth. The mids are not as nice as my Sony's were but they still sound great for a wide range of music and production uses. I would have bought a pair of Sony's again but I figured what the heck I could also use them as bluetooth headphones for watching TV on my Apple TV when my daughter is sleeping at night.

People are spending way too much on headphones these days and it is almost criminal the cost of some of these that don't provide much benefit. I realize some technologies like noise canceling can add to the cost but there are lots of headphones out there that do that. I don't need noise canceled that badly listening to music in less than optimal environments to pay $550.
I don't spend more than $30 for headphones for myself (non-pro occasional use).

I've gifted Beats to my family, but they appreciate their cachet and features and I only purchase them at a severe discount (which brings them closer to fair cost in my mind) on Black Friday.

I don't see it as criminal on Apple's part, I just don't understand how customers did not bat an eye when Apple removed the headphone jack from the iPhone and then offered $160 wireless ones as a (admittedly not mandatory) replacement.

But at the same time, I'm glad these exist even if they're not for me.

Apple is not an audiophile product company and they hold the dubious title of denigrating the quality of music available world wide with their iPods, iPhones and earbuds. If any company knows how to make great sounding music sound like crap - it's apple.
Perhaps these $500 headphones are an attempt to sort of heal their notorious reputation - but history is against them.

Pravda means "truth" in Russian. Are you trying to tell us something here, comrade?

So I guess by the god awful design and whack job price it was 3.5 years of smoking crack and 6 months of dev.
Apple are just losing it lately, a £129 pony pouch, £59 crappy magnetic wallet and now these car crashes. No Jobs, No Ives, no idea anymore...

So I placed an order for these in Space Grey. If the reviews come out next week or the week after stating they are bad, I can cancel my order. But I would like to replace my Sennheiser wireless headphones I got 5 years ago for $379 at some point soon.

They are really nice but I've come to the concussion that I wouldn't pay more than $200 for headphones. I don't care who made them, the materials, or tech in them. I can get a nice set of premium Bang and Olusons for $199.

Classic California! 😂

It took 4 years to develop this, yet it doesn't even fold to pack into your backpack like pretty much all of the other over-the-ear headphones. I considered buying this, then I saw how you would store it or pack it, and immediately I checked out.

Well this is hardly anything to boast about. Most competent audio equipment manufacturers could do the same in less than one year. Probably way less. No wonder they are the price they are. Recovering 4 years of R&D on a pair of headphones will take time or a very high price. We know which option Apple went with.

Not by any means an audiophile, have no idea if these are overpriced, guess we'll see when the reviews start coming in.

It'll have to be convincing though, here in Canada they are $779 Cdn... I guess I am not the target customer.
Hold on ... let me take a sip of coffee.

$779?!

The minuses are more than tha pluses, starting from the overpricing, the weight, the polyester, the features, no touch based controls, the cups doesn't fold, no real protective case.. no wire option, no usb-c .. just to name a few.
Agree on most that but there is a wire option. Apple sell it to you for $35.

I have a few pairs of the B&O H9 which I didn’t pay more than £300 for.
No way these get even close to them aesthetically, can’t comment on the sound yet but doubt it’ll be night and day between them in apples favour!

And what if they’re not “audiophile” grade, but still noticeably improved over the <$400 options?

I have a feeling these are going to be the XDR of headphones. Not “professional” grade but with a feature set and quality (never mind the convenience) that isn’t being catered to in this price range.
How many people can discern sound this well? How many people can discern lossless, 128K, 256K, or 56 K compression?

This a luxury good which probably does a great job but like $500 purses its really a signal to yourself and others that you get to have fancy stuff.

People complaining about the $550, and here I am just wishing it was only $550 for us. In Denmark, it's 4.799 DKK (781 USD). No way I'm paying that, and judging by the "short" 3 week delivery, I guess I'm not alone.
761 USD in Poland as well :D (2799 PLN)

You can't compare bitrate compression to out and out sound sound quality (ie. a good audiophile headphone vs. consumer wireless) - the latter the difference is extremely evident, the former (at least at 256k vs lossless), even trained ears can fail in blind tests.

If these elevate what is expected in the consumer space from a product of this type, they will be worth it.

will be interesting as hell to see the review videos pop up and how Apple justifies twice the price of comparable headphones
Always complaining.. they gave you a MacBook faster than most high end laptops on the market for 1100 bucks and now you whine about paying a premium of 100 or 200 dollars for their headphones.

$899 here in Australia ($668 USD).

you have to remember the US price doesn’t show Tax.

They didn’t “give” me anything. And if people having opinions bothers you, get off the internet and snuggle with your Apple boxes in a corner
