Enough fools to push the delivery times into March 2020. Longest I can recall of any Apple product ever released.

Sounds like sound business pricing to me!
That’s what happens when you only make 20 of each color. Notice the exploit for faster delivery discovered yesterday in which BTO skus shipped faster than stock on hand? What more proof do you need that the fast sellout was caused by artificial stock constraints, and not demand or manufacturing capacity?

How many people can discern sound this well? How many people can discern lossless, 128K, 256K, or 56 K compression?

This a luxury good which probably does a great job but like $500 purses its really a signal to yourself and others that you get to have fancy stuff.
You’re not going to get pushback from me on that. Most of the time when I see people in their 40’s+ spending big money on a sound system would be just as well served by a $400 system in a box.

As for the cost, maybe I’ll pick up a pair years down the road, but I’m more than happy listening to my podcasts (and VERY occasionally music) on my AirPods.

I do think the premature “it’ll never be as good as my Bose whatever’s” to be funny. Not because it’s right (we don’t know) but some here seem to be offended on behalf of a different brand for some reason.

I wonder why he bothered to delete the tweets? There is no prohibition on saying when you signed an NDA.
Actually not true. In my work, I have had to sign separate NDA's to assure I would not disclose I had signed an NDA.

The minuses are more than tha pluses, starting from the overpricing, the weight, the polyester, the features, no touch based controls, the cups doesn't fold, no real protective case.. no wire option, no usb-c .. just to name a few.
I think you try to look too much on the - side (no touch control, no wire option).

If priced around $199 to $249-ish these would have looked great with my *old* iPhone 7 Plus and Apple Watch Series 2

They look dated to me (and not in a retro cool way).

Still can't get over the price. Along the same price as a Mac Mini (with Edu discount)
There’s no way this would priced at $249.

4 years and they didn't once look at the Sony XM3's, Bose 700's/QC's, B&O's, etc, and realize "Man, this price is really stupid, only fools will buy this".

I still love my wireless Sony MDR-1000X ... a LOT. They were $350 new which was a little bit of a mental stretch for me but worth every penny. I'd seriously consider the AirPods Max but kind of agree with the pricing. Even if people believe/write it's a steal because it competes in the $500-1,1000 headphone range ... that still seems to be a much more limited market. I don't think I've ever knocked Apple for pricing but this one seems little out there. Granted, I'm no expert in the high end audio market.

I find it somewhat unprofessional to publicly disclose the time spent creating a product that just launched.

That's assuming this competes with the $250 - $350 headphones and not the $500 - $1000 headphones. We don't know where they are supposed to compete (and maybe Apple doesn't know) but it's too soon to know if these are overpriced and destined for a quiet demise like the Power Mac G4 Cube or the Gold Apple Watch Edition or are priced high but fairly given their performance (like the Pro Display XDR).

Note: I'm not going to buy them. I don't spend hundreds of dollars on headphones (I have a set of AirPods Pro but I only paid $90 for them new [not a reproducible deal]). That being said, if Apple wants to sell $550 headphones and people want to buy them, what does that matter to me? I'm not going to judge how people spend their money; I only need to worry about how I spend mine.

Agree -- I'm really curious to see the reviews.

Seamlessly pair to my MBP and iPhone at the same time allowing me to take calls as I work without switching devices.
I saw people boasted about this a lot. How do you dictate text on your iPhone when you didn’t wear your Sony?

I am not in manufacturing, but does it really takes 4 years to design and build a headphone? Its not like new technology.

Ive been using the qc 35 v1 for 4-5 years now 5 days a week for atleast 3 hours a day (sometimes 6). Only one issue and still love them. The issue is the leather started peeling off. I can wear them for 6+ hours and have zero ear fatigue. A co worker of mine picked up the xm2's and i could not stand them for the exact reasons you described. they felt cheap and then dang touch controls were more on a hassle than a feature. They did sound good though
I have Bose QC35 and the cushion started to degrade less than 2 years making the seal and the fit degraded as well. Funnily it used to be very comfortable at first but now it hurts my right ear. Must be because of ear cushion degradation.
And the physical buttons is at strange place.
Also, the 2 devices pairing forced me to demote it from my iPhone almost instantly after I bought it.

I am thinking that designers and marketing/sales work separately. Designers designed the headphones and then gave it to Sales/Marketing and told them "here, we have the headphones you wanted. Now, sell them." And, Marketing/Sales thought that $550 was a justified price point for this product. I doubt they even spent a second of their time looking at the competition when designing these headphones....

I have gotten three replies saying the same thing but I already replied to one. Figure I’ll reply again. Yes, these can happen but generally speaking this is not a common thing. When you look at how many former Apple employees have discussed things related to products they worked on, one can assume that Apple does not typically apply such a tactic. None of us have read the NDA so we can’t be sure what the restrictions are but I would conjecture that a lawyer wouldn’t get involved in something so trivial in this specific situation.

I'm curious how the mesh fabric on the ear pieces and head strap look after a few weeks of use, as we humans tend to soil nice things.
I'm not worry about ear cushion that I can replace but worry a bit on head strap because it can't be replaced.

I just don't understand how customers did not bat an eye when Apple removed the headphone jack from the iPhone and then offered $160 wireless ones as a (admittedly not mandatory) replacement.
Because the wireless is what it's supposed to be. I'm back using my NAD and suddenly very annoyed at the wire.

It took 4 years to develop this, yet it doesn't even fold to pack into your backpack like pretty much all of the other over-the-ear headphones. I considered buying this, then I saw how you would store it or pack it, and immediately I checked out.
It's ugly but it's functional.

Let’s remember, this is the same company that took years to simply release a new tower computer

They often overthink it and over engineer things.

I know someone who in fact did sign the NDA for this and they said they would never have dreamed of saying/posting ANYTHING about the product or even mentioning the NDA or that they even signed one. They didn't say they weren't allowed to say anything about it but they did say that it is HIGHLY frowned upon to do something like this. Legal or not, it's a good way to burn bridges, not just at Apple but throughout Silicon Valley, I think.
Also, I've actually met this guy. First, this article calling him an engineer isn't accurate. He was a designer on the webpage side, I believe. It's not like he was involved at all on the headphones project. And his tweeting about it is definitely making the chatter around with his old coworkers in a not great way. Kinda sounds like he just wanted to boast that he knew about it, then realized it was a dumb thing to do.

I can agree with you there. It’s not a good tactic on this person’s part. And I can definitely see how it would run counter to culture and precedent. But once the genie is out of the bottle, it’s near impossible to put back.
