People complain about absolutely everything. Apple is raising the tide here, no one is going backwards, this is groundwork for the future (and the now for many). Still, people complain, and how. Never ceases to amaze me.
Yes, this is table stakes now, which is good for everyone. It's just a confusing rollout with no hardware story to back it up. Especially revealing previously unknown deficiencies in existing products.

It's the most predictable thing about this site. I'm very happy for the update but I'm using wired iems and headphones. Also it's unlike Apple to not charge extra so I'm grateful for that :)

Unbelievable!. Not even with lightning cable!!!. Apple prided itself as having a close relationship with music.
What an overpriced product with incomplete support!. So, the alternative to hear lossless with headphones is using another brand of headphones?. Will iPhone 13 be able to send lossless audio somehow (wire or wireless) to AirPods max?.
What is Apple “proposal” to hear lossless?. Using iPhone internal speakers?!, maybe iPhone 13 will bring back the 3.5mm port?. “Losslessgate”, anyone?.

I contacted Apple Support today. First the so-called Specialist said there is no port for any cable to be plugged into the AirPodsMax. Then, when I asked about Atmos support, he said that there would be support and through a cable to the Max!
It seems most Apple “specialists” don’t know squat about the stuff they sell. I’ve overheard specialists giving out incorrect informations before when I was at the store checking out the iPhone 11 in 2019. I feel it’s rude to butt in and correct them though.

I think many members here know more about Apple products than the folks that sell them. When I bought a HomePod after it was discontinued, the specialist was stunned when I showed him how to decode a serial number and we say that a HomePod purchased a few months ago was made in early 2018.

If the rumors and recent history are anything to go by, Apple is slowly "undoing" their mistakes:
  • redesigned 14-inch/16-inch MacBook Pro will include more ports, including HDMI and MagSafe
  • The butterfly keyboard has been removed from all MacBooks
Maybe this will be fixed with the release of another generation of AirPods in the future.
I get making mistakes and we’re all happy to see course correction when it comes. In this case I’m more commenting on the timing. If a year or two had been between the items in my lists it would’ve seemed pretty normal. Then you could hope for a new remote with find my or new headphones with lossless support in the near future. With this timing it just makes it seem like these things weren’t even on their radar.

I do wonder if covid had anything to do with this.

I would be surprised if your DAC didn't "support" ALAC. Most USB outputs convert at the source to PCM then the DAC processes PCM. MQA is a different beast because it needs to be unfolded to get the hires content. Thats why DACs (or a software player at least) need to support MQA. Are you sure you have to replace your DAC to play ALAC over USB? Have you tried playing a ALAC file on your computer out the USB to your DAC?
I've never tried it no, its just the article said the DAC would have to support it digitally and I figure its like MQA where it transmits it to the DAC to decode.

Is it outside the realm of your ability to show some compassion to those that purchased Apple's best, high-end Audiophile headphones, and now find out that when Apple releases their Audiophile music service it won't work with their audiophile headphones?

It seems a reasonable assumption to me. Not to mention, before ripping-off customers $600 for the headphones, Apple might have let people know ahead of time that they wouldn't work with any lossless music services, even wired.
OP made a very reasonable point that has sailed directly over your head apparently. It was very clear that the headphones didn't support it when they were purchased and if it was possible it would have been done. Whats your solution, to never release an upgraded music service because some of their old products can't support it?? The entitlement on display here is breathtaking.

1. This marketing tragedy is going to get even bigger than the one with XDR display stand.

2. Please stop the nonsense that lossless is not even distinguishable on the ear! Steve Jobs himself was working with a senior sound engineer years ago on an entirely new lossless sound format (there is an interview with the guy) because he was complaining that iTunes users were only hearing 8 percent of what they could actually hear.

3. Spatial audio requires an additional processing, which I'm sure only a certain portion of mainstream artists will do. Lossless is everywhere. Literally all songs are originally in lossless copies.

When you are as big as Apple and make as big a mess as this, you "shrug it off." You will survive...case in point, Facebook - how many breaches have they had until now? They just keep getting away with it, and so will Apple with this, and I believe, just like with the Butterfly keyboard and Trashcan Mac Pro, they will silently acknowledge the issue and release a new generation of hardware that "fixes" these shortcomings.

They won't let you, the average consumer, get the satisfaction of Apple apologizing for the shortcoming and making amends for it.

The good news is you can buy a pair of say, Sennheiser HD6XX's and something like the FIIO K5 Pro for less than the price of the AirPods Max and fully enjoy Apple's new lossless audio - wired of course. Apple really scored an own goal on this one.

Apple didn’t advertise APM supporting direct digital lightning to lightning audio anyway. Why do you have that sudden expectation out of nowhere?
It’s ****ing expensive and hyped like hell by Apple, that’s why.

You call the Max old? Jesus. Apologist much.

Replace “old” with “antecedent” and his point still holds. Product does the same thing it did yesterday. Unreasonable to expect it to add every new feature, especially ones that are nothing more than aural placebos.
