My translate worked immediately. I went in to download the languages, but they already were (probably because I had them downloaded in the Translate app), so I just pressed both AirPods, and got the tone and “translating Spanish.”

Very cool!

I have English, French, Brazilian Portuguese, and Spanish Spanish downloaded. I wish other versions of Spanish were available, but I’m happy with this. I speak conversational Puerto Rican Spanish myself.

I was just able to update my AirPods Pro 2. I put my phone on the charger. Opened the lid of my AirPods and connected to a charger as well and placed them next to the iPhone, then closed the lid. I left them alone for 30 minutes and now the AirPods are updated.

I got mine working now. Not sure how. Based on the UK. Maybe I just needed to download English US before using it?
Apparently both target and destination languages need to be downloaded. Which I did... and it still tells me to download languages lol. I'll give it some time to unf** itself.

I am getting this also, weirdly the audio prompt I am getting is saying to "To use live translations with AirPods...." live as in the movie title "Live and Let Die"

I have downloaded both UK and US English, and another language. If I go into the translation app, on the live tab and press Set Up Live Translation, nothing happens when I press the tick in the upper right

<edit> I think it has suddenly started working, the Set Up Live Translation button has disappeared and Start Translation now shows with the 2 languages, maybe it was indexing something

Will the firmware updates not make my audio sound like trash when connecting to my Windows computer for work Teams meetings? Never a issue with connecting to my iPhone/iPad/MacBook/Apple Watch. Just always lousy when connected to a Windows machine (prob intentional).
Bi-direction bluetooth audio was, until recently, trash.

Apple implemented a non-standard improvement ~3 years ago. More recently, the Bluetooth LE Audio standard added a new codec (LC3) that can provide improved sound quality. Last I checked Apple hadn't adopted LC3 on the AirPods, iOS, or MacOS, and nothing seems to have changed in the last year. Apparently Windows does support LC3, but you'd need a bluetooth adapter that supports a recent version of Bluetooth (5.3 or later, I think), but that won't help your AirPods if Apple still hasn't added LC3 support.

I just realized that Live Translation should also allow you to watch TV programs, movies, YouTube videos, etc. in languages other than your own, and have them translated.

Does anyone know if this update will be applied if you decide to stay on iOS 18 and MacOS Sequoia? Or do you need to upgrade your system?

I'm not ready to move to Tahoe or iOS 26 yet but would love the higher quality audio.

Open the translate app, click on the live button (airpod logo) and it works fine for me, (also in the UK).

Hear translations for nearby conversations using AirPods

When someone nearby speaks to you in a different language, you can use Live Translation with AirPods—enabled by Apple Intelligence*—to hear what they’re saying translated into your preferred language in real time. The translated dialogue also appears on your iPhone.
Note: Live Translation with AirPods is supported on AirPods 4 (ANC), AirPods Pro 2, or AirPods Pro 3 paired with an iPhone 15 Pro or later when Apple Intelligence is turned on. AirPods must have the latest firmware. Live Translation isn’t available in all languages or regions**; this feature isn’t available in the EU. For more information on availability, see the iOS and iPadOS Feature Availability website.
  1. Go to the Translate app

    on your iPhone.
  2. Wear your AirPods, and make sure they’re connected to your device.
  3. Tap Live.
oh my .. we only have iphone 13.

I plugged my AirPods 4 ANC into my iPad via USB-C (case with pods in) and it just straight updated in a matter of minutes. Not sure if I’ve ever thought about doing that, but tried it. Updated.
About an hour ago I plugged my APP2 case (with the Airpods inside) into my M1 Macbook Pro, and found that the case was then updated from 8A0 to 8A356, but the Airpods themselves are still at 8A343. Now I've plugged the APP2 case plus Airpods into my iPhone 16 Pro Max, and I'll check it after a while to see if the Airpods themselves get updated.

Doesn't work with my 16 Pro Max at all. Keeps telling me to download languages which I did and it shows them downloaded. Husband's 15 Pro Max worked just fine. what junk. oh well at least they call it Beta

I tried it today on YouTube videos in both Spanish and French, it worked fine translating them to English. There's a slight lag as the translation needs the speaker to finish the sentence to ensure they have the proper context, but the translations were good.

iPhone 16 Pro on 26.0 with updated AirPods Pro 2.

Hopefully just for listening. There's universal hate for those that use AirPods or car bluetooth in Teams calls. Horrible mic quality and increases the meeting time since they're constantly being asked to repeat.

For the Windows issues in the past my experience was improved by using a newer external dongle that supports the latest bt profiles and audio codecs.

Will try out using the AirPods as camera remote on my 4th gen AirPods with ANC. The keep audio in headphones will also be useful.

Just to be clear, AirPods sound phenomenal on voice calls if you enable Voice Isolation from the menu at the top of Control Center during a call. Unfortunately, it’s out of the way for most people to find and only accessible during calls. But once selected, Voice Isolation remains enabled and does dramatically change the game.
