…no one is saying these are different AirPods Pro 2 models. We all understand this is a new software based feature for an existing product.
they show them during a brand new keynote where they have always announced new hardware.
I had several friends text me that they are ordering the new AirPods Pros and they already have them, so I had to show them enough info that they decided to cancel the orders, that was just 5 people that I know. So try to imagine the general public who just see's an ad and believes it is newer than their current devices. Apple is known for yearly updates on products so it isn't out of the ordinary for many people to think these are new.
I doubt "we all" applies to "we all".

You underestimate the intelligence of folks in these forums. We’re an exception to the rule. Or your friends just didn’t pay attention to what Apple actually said, because they made zero insinuation this was a new product. :)

I'm super excited to try this out. I damaged my hearing years ago but it started getting worse about a year ago. I started wearing hearing aids, and they help quite a bit. If this works even a moderate amount, it would greatly improve my daily life at work as I'm constantly switching to my AirPods for phone calls and hearing aids when I'm done.
I have a family member whose prescription hearing aids connect directly to their iPhone. They hear all notifications, music, phone calls, etc. through their hearing aid. I have a friend with a different brand of hearing aid that enjoys the same feature.

I stuck mine (gen 2/USB-C) in when in a noisy restaurant and was delighted to discover that they successfully masked the background noise but still let me hear the voices of people at my table (which I couldn’t make out over the background hubbub before). It was a really useful bit of additional functionality which turned an irritating situation into a pleasurable one.

I will say, I did find the way the new features were presented somewhat misleading. I would understand how some people may think there were new versions of hardware.

I just rewatched it. They genuinely say outright that it’s coming as a free software update for the existing models.

Only way you could miss that is if you aren’t paying attention. :)

10-4 good buddy.👍

I'm just here to thank everyone for confirming that the AirPods Pro hearing aid features mean no new hardware. I watched the keynote live and wasn't sure if that meant the feature was just for yet another new small variant of the AirPods Pro 2 or not (although it sounds like we still don't know if this applies to the original AirPods Pro 2, which I have, or the "new" APP2 with USB-C that also got some other minor sound quality updates).

Do they come with support for lossless audio with Dolby Atmos from Apple Music?

Doesn’t look like it:

AirPods Pro 2 pair with Apple Vision Pro to deliver Lossless Audio with ultra‑low latency, for an unprecedented sound experience.5 Both feature the H2 chip, communicating at industry-shattering speed and unlocking a revolutionary new format rendering pure, uncompressed sound in real time. So your movies, shows and games become breathtakingly immersive

This really is a nice update and I’m glad that Apple is focusing on hearing loss protection. I just don’t think it’s quite accepted yet though to wear AirPods when interacting directly with other people. It still gives the impression that you’re not actively listening or participating in a conversation. Out of politeness I still remove mine when interacting with a cashier for example.

But maybe that’s just me.

I have a sinking feeling this will only apply to the Pro 2 with USB-C and not work on the original Lightning version of the AirPods Pro 2. Hope I'm wrong about that.

Happy to stand corrected when it launches but suspect it’ll be for both the USB-C and Lightning versions - the updated lightning ones were referred to as AirPods Pro (2) before USB-C was added?

the USB-C and Lightning versions
To my knowledge the only difference between the Lightning and USB-C version is the charging case. There is no difference in the AirPods. It is possible to order just the USB-C case. That seems like a waste as my Lightning case works just fine with either a cable or MagSafe charging. For $100.00 I would not even consider updating the case to USB-C.

Tim Cook „…new generation of AirPods…“

Are you getting it? These aren't new AirPod Pros. It's just a software update for our already two-year-old models.

"Can't innovate anymore, my ass."

So what’s the difference between this ‘new feature’ and just doing a free hearing test using the mimi app and applying the audiogram it generates through the iPhone’s accessibility settings like you’ve been able to do for years?

I may take a look at these once they are available. I didn't watch the event so I don't know exactly what the difference is with older AirPods, but I saw something online that mentioned over the ear functionality-- or I misread something. For me, Airpods have never stayed in my ears and I still have a set of them somewhere but I quit using them. AirPods are not the only brand that didn't stay in my ears, I tried most of the popular competitors and I had the same problem. My hearing finally got bad enough that I got hearing aids and they work with my iPhone but the sound quality is only acceptable, not great, when playing music or listening to podcasts.

I was wondering the same thing. I sure hope it's different/better because applying the Mimi generated audiogram didn't offer any improvements that I could notice.

The Pro 2s are much, much better in this regard. I also had my first-gens replaced like 6-8 times, but have had the same pair of 2s for the last 2 years without issue.
I'm still rocking my first generation ones. This is after I accidentally washed them and partially dried them in a tumbler dryer. The only thing really noticeable about the age is the case's battery seems to not last as long. Given the survived a wash functionality, I'm highly impressed.
