I have had so many charging issues and power drain issues with my gen 2 case, which led to two warranty replacements, that I am hesitant to drop $250 on another pair.
The airpods experience has always been the same with me across every pair, Pro and regular alike - every morning, before I need to use them, open the case and re-seat them because one or both drained in the case overnight.

My first gen APP are still working after 5+ years, but reading how the 2nd gen APP don't hold up as well I'm unsure what brand I will buy next when my current pair eventually dies. I kinda of feel like maybe I should exclusively go back to wired earbuds which I still use regularly with my phone.
I’m not sure who told you the second generations hold up worse than the first generations.
I had to have my first generation AirPod pros replaced 4 times.
I’ve had my second generations replaced once, after several years, and the only reason was due to battery health degradation, which is going to happen to any electronic device.

My first gen still works fine, and the battery is decent.

On the other hand, there is absolutely no personal data collected with your AirPods, and they are cheap enough that I feel like this would just lead to an exponential increase in AirPods related e-waste.
Yeah, it’s quite annoying that if someone steals your AirPods, they can start using them immediately just fine.
But on the other hand, it means that if anyone who is not too familiar with technology just wants to sell AirPods that they aren’t using, no matter how old they are, the new user can immediately start using them no problem.
If we start locking them to Apple IDs, like we do the iPhone already, so many people who tried to buy ones that are locked or even just find old ones that they may have purchased themselves locked to old accounts will end up just thrown away because they don’t feel like dealing with the hassle.

A bigger issue is that they’d stop working reliably as Bluetooth earbuds for non-Apple devices. If you decide to pair something not produced or supported by Apple, how are you going to log into your Apple account to authenticate your AirPods?

We need 5G and cameras embedded in each! This way we can jog with direct to AirPod streaming!

That's a good point. I know, surprisingly, a couple people that use AirPods with Android, and don't own anything else by Apple.

My retired AirPods pro are used exclusively with my work-provided Dell laptop, and aren't linked to my my phone at all.

The leaks said the next AirPods Pro would be a major re design, but this is the new apple, only minor changes
In exactly what way do they need to be redesigned?
I am seriously asking.
What about the current design isn’t functional? What do you believe needs to be improved?
Or are you just suggesting they need to redesign them because… uh, change is good I guess.

What is the point of criticising something without providing any arguments.
To put my displeasure out there into the ether, so that everyone (Apple included) knows that these are not universally praised and there is a lot of unmet potential for improvement in a newer model. I don’t have to go into detail to make it known that the product could, and should be better.

Hoping for longer up time. The APP 2s added another hour which was amazing. Would love the APP 3s to hit 7-8h uptime on a single charge.

Dropping the cheap, archaic shiny white plastic shell with a giant ass seam, filled with glue would be welcome as well!

I'm not sure what you were reading but my APP2 have held up much better than my APP1. APP1 got dirt stuck to the inside of the case, developed issues with static and connections. Sometimes sound issues on calls. My APP2 have had none of those issues and the ANC is as good or better than ever after 2 years. APP2 are great.

They sound better than APP1 as well. I won a set of Bose Ultra earbuds and while the sound quality and ANC was marginally better, the Bose had connectivity issues and poor auto switching between devices.

So my APP2 even held up well against those.

I'm not going to go into a lot of detail either, but I think your post could probably be better too. ;)

Many people on here and Reddit say they have gone though multiple pairs of APP2, that does not leave me with a good feeling about a product. I am over 5 years with my APP1 which is decent, but I would expect at least 5 years of regular use from any pair. I guess we will see how the App3 hold up, or don't, over the next year or two. I know myself and if I paid $250 for a pair of earbuds and they went bad after lets say 18 months I would be furious.

The Apple we all know now. All the major redesigns and new features being rumored are just clickbait. Apple's innovations these days are what was written in this article of "almost identical".
The M4 Mac Mini isnt even a year old, as just one example…

Personally, I'd an appreciate a soft, in-ear "hook" to hold the units in place (like the older Bose QuietComfort).

I've never had an AirPod (any model) stay in my ear for more than a few seconds :/
