Have you sized up or down for the tips, coming from APP1/APP2 to APP3?

I’m trying to get an idea of how the size of Apple’s official (non 3rd party) silicon tips have changed from one generation AirPods Pro to another, if any.

As an example, I’ve gone from APP1 (Medium Tips) to APP3 (Medium Tips). But I’m considering down-sizing to the Small tips as I feel the design of the APP3 may be pushing the Medium tips outward more than on the APP1.

So I’m hopefully going to give enough poll options that may give others an idea of which tip may suit them on the latest AirPods Pro 3’s from where they came from on either the APP1 or APP2.

Just to repeat, this is only regarding the official Apple silicon tips, not 3rd party models.

Also, could you state the sizes you changed to, or stayed the same with?

On APP2, I used the tip it came with, which I believe is Medium.

On APP3, I went down one size, to Small.

APP2: Large.
APP3: Large is half a size too big, while medium reports a bad seal.

I did keep using the large, because otherwise they don't work as intended, but ended up with some sort of irritation or rash on the inside of the left tragus. Quite painful.

I want to love the APP3 as the adaptive audio has actually become useful even in noisy environments. It's no longer that b/w blocking if it's noisy. But they're not comfortable. I'll give them another go once this rash heals, but I don't think I'll keep using them in the long run.

APP2: Left - medium; right - large or medium, neither seemed quite "right", but medium was marginally more comfortable (I've always had issues with my right ear and any ear buds, sometimes resorted to inserting them upside down). Seemed like I had to adjust both fairly frequently as they would work their way out.
APP3: Right - medium is perfect, comfortable and stable from the start; left - has been a struggle to get a good fit, uncomfortable with medium or small after 30 - 45 minutes. XS is more comfortable but can't get a good seal. I'm trying large on my left ear now and it seems like that will be the best, possibly because it's not pushed as far into my ear.

I'm happy that both pretty much stay where I put them. Not that I never have to adjust them, but it's much less frequent, but I wish the left was as comfortable as the right. First world problems, I know.

After more days of testing, I think I’ll stick with the Medium sized tips, so the same as APP1 for me.

As mentioned in another thread, the skin where the APP makes contact with needs to be wiped free of oils along with the APP themselves. Only then will you give these in-ear headphones the best chance of performing at their best for as long as possible.

Update:

On one hand I feel like I can't go back to the 2 after having experienced how these are just better in almost every way, but they're just so uncomfortable.

A simple comparison would be that the APP2 felt like they comfortably just rested in my ear while the ear tips sort of ballooned out to create a seal; while the APP3 mainly get attached by getting shoved into the ear canal.

Everything about the APP3 just says that it needs to firmly get stuck just right to create the seal and do the (by me unwanted) heart rate monitoring. And apparently the shape of my ears can then cause some painful abrasions, to the point of a scab forming.

I fully blame that ridiculous inclusion of heart rate monitoring. It's a fun concept, but it feels like they probably forced the design of the overall AirPods themselves just to make the heart rate sensor work; and that created unnecessary compromises. Based completely just on my experiences, of course.

Edit: I found that I could go all the way down to small with the APP3 and still mostly get a good seal, but in the end medium (down from large in APP2) seem to be the sweet spot that "should" work.

I was a large with APP2, initially medium in APP3 but started to hurt a little so tried small and still sound good & no longer hurt.
Will see if they stay put whilst doing activity, especially in hotter weather.

I couldn’t wear the Pros 1 or 2 tops at all because they were too slick and wouldn’t stay in my ears. I’m wearing XS on my 3s.

After having initially moved from medium or large with APP2 in my right ear to APP3 medium, and medium APP2 in my left year to APP3, I ended up switching my left year to small, and angling the left more towards the front than I had had before. I saw the suggestion to change the angle somewhere, thought it was worth a try, and it really did help make the left more comfortable. Still not as comfortable as the right, but it's working fine for me.

Can't stop my left AirPod to stop making a clicking noise with medium so will try large. Not as comfortable but will give it ago.

On my APP2 I had medium, so around the same for me with the APP3

I feel like I’ve tried just about every combination . . . I thought I was finally set with left - small and right - medium, then I started getting the clicking noise in the right. I switched the right to large and that stopped the clicking. I can’t say that I feel confident that this will be a permanent fix though, the way things have gone so far.

I will be able to give it a proper try out today so I will report back, but im unsure if this will be a permanent fix! Might have to go 3rd party with the tips.

EDIT: Worked for me. Going up a size in the left ear stopped the clicking. Not as comfortable as a medium tip but this will have to do for now.

I am in the same boat. I could use APP2 with either medium or large, both are fine. Medium in APP3 are fine at the beginning, but as soon as I start walking or move my mouth the ANC starts shifting, which is uncomfortable because I can hear street noise come and go under the music.

Large have perfect ANC, but they are too big and I feel pressure in my ears. Apple should do a size between them, the difference between medium and large is too much. I'm hoping for some third party tips to solve this.

Going a size down is ESSENTIAL to maintaining a similar sound signature to the APP2. At first I was disappointed (I put medium tips on there; the same as APP2). However the bass was a bit too much, and the vocals felt recessed and distant. Switching to the small tips, made the sound close to perfect for me. They're not the relaxed listen that the APP2s are, but vocals sound wonderful, lots of detail and nice separation throughout. Happy with them.
