So what? And you don't know if it would be much larger.

It's just a matter of design and engineering. From the first draw to the chain of production. People are smart and creative, they can design a repairable product.
Sure but it will be a different product and most likely a larger product. Of course this gives the concern trolls something to squawk about. I’m not going to lose sleep over it.

See Samsung's ear-buds. Are they much larger? I don't think so.

It doesn't matter whether it is soldered in or not.
The soldered battery provides high reliability. It has zero to do with repair ability. (Re)soldering is relatively simple...

It does matter if it is soldered in or not.

Soldering it creates a product that has to be discarded when the the consumable battery stops working. This is inherently environmentally bad.

Love it! An enclosed battery designed to be replaced, soldered on and covered in plastic. I guess Apple found its next subscription revenue stream - AirPods.

I think Tim needs to do another speech about how Apple cares about the environment.

Did you read the article? The non-repairability has nothing to do with the method of battery connection.

Obviously the glued construction is a barrier as well, but at least how I read the article, was that the soldered connector is also a factor making the battery non replaceable, thus making the AirPods non repairable when the battery dies.

"iFixit also discovered a watch-style button cell battery inside each AirPod, replacing the pin-type battery found in the original AirPods. iFixit notes this could be the same battery found in Samsung's Galaxy Buds, and those are replaceable, but Apple has tethered the battery to a soldered cable, so AirPods customers will have no such luck."

Apple isn’t perfect, so they’re hypocrites?

Well, no one posting here is perfect either. Does that mean everyone is a hypocrite?

Do I wish the AirPods had easily replaceable batteries? Sure.

For those who choose not to buy because the battery isn’t replaceable, cool. Others will buy anyway, satisfied with the $29 AppleCare battery replacement and/or the out-of-warranty battery service, and the fact they’re recyclable.

I don't get the massive outcry about this. Something this advanced, this small, how could they make it "repairable" without changing the form factor significantly?

When you look at the size of them, there surely must be a billion other things more deserving of attention from an environmental impact than these?

Can you recycle your AirPods with Apple?

As to the fact they're seen as consumables and expensive - I've been using my AirPods pretty much every single day since release. Work that out as a cost per day and its bound to be measured in pennies. So I think they're great value for money.

I’m sure they can do better, but a 95/100 isn’t too bad. In a perfect world, it would be 100/100.

Yes, Apple certainly cares about the environment. There’s plenty of objective evidence. A small negative doesn’t cancel out a huge positive, does it? Must Apple be perfect to be worthy of being described as “caring about the environment”?

Are your earphones 250USD?

No my wired ones were about 35 or so. But if it's concern about environmental wastage surely one set of AirPods beats 4-5 sets of EarPods?

And I'm talking about the standard Wire-charged AirPods 2 which are like 160, not the new Pros ones.

There's lots of small convenience advantages to wireless as well. No cable tugging when I move around.

This is one of the reasons I purchase the $20 clone versions that last for about a year of daily use.

If the battery was replaceable I would seriously consider investing in a pair because I know I'll get my money's worth by replacing the battery each year.

Imagine if Apple sealed the iPhones and said you can no longer replace the battery. No deal.

Even my MBP battery is replaceable in my mid 2012 unit. No way purchasing a unit without that option.

I would gladly buy a wired version of the AirPods Pro. The noise cancelling can then be powered thru the lightning connector. The AirPods Pro would then last so much longer, no battery to deteriorate. Not good for Tim's profit sheet though.

What would also be handy is that the AppleTV remote could pass audio thru the lightning port and then you could use the wired AirPods Pro with the remote. With the remote having a sensitive touchpad, they could put lockswitch on the remote so you could then pair the remote with other bluetooth audio device, effective you've got wireless era buds - another option.

Does anyone that knows about batteries know if coin cell have better longevity than pin type? The only reason I’m looking to upgrade my 3 year old original AirPods is that the battery lasts all of 5-10 minutes. Even if these hold 50% of capacity after 3 years I’d be happy. If they can hold an hour of life 6 or so years down the road I’d happy.

Totally expected. To make items like this with replaceable parts would be even more of an engineering nightmare and would likely make the product twice the size and/or completely unbuildable in the first place. Do people really think the oceans are going to fill up with discarded AirPod Pros? Goodness gracious, I bet everyone throws away far more offensive items every single day of their life, never mind once every couple of years.

Still, none of that will stop some people being hysterically offended, but hey ho

I think you are in the very tiny minority with this.

While "almost" everyone drives around with combustion engines... it makes no sense to care about small things like this. Who cares if the buds can't be repaired? There are worse eco-crimes?! For example I know people who order toilet paper on Scamazon because it's more convenient to have a truck come to deliver it.
