Same here. When I think about it, that's not very Apple. All my devices are made by Apple so I'm only used to the "no backward compatibility within the Apple brand".

AirPods Users Without a Nearby Apple Device Can Visit an Apple Store to Update Firmware

I run iOS 15 on my iPhone, which is what I mostly use with my AirProds Pro2, which prevents updates. When I want to allow the firmware update I connect them to my iPad which runs iOS 16. That way I can wait until I'm sure the upgrade is ok.
Would it be that difficult to build a dedicated AirPods app?
Because that would make too much sense. Apple does some dumb stuff when it comes to updates for their headphones.

Stand on one foot, with your hands in the air and say "Please update 3 times fast" and just maybe it will update. Their update process is such a crapshoot. Mine never update either even after doing all the things they claim will make them update. Too bad apple just wont add a check for update button like with all their other devices.

I connect mine to my MacBook to update I think you need to have the AirPods in the case but open it right?
In principle they could update over audio. You know, like modem sounds. Probably the firmware is too many megabytes so it would take a week. 
I was surprised when I discovered I could pair mine to my Surface Pro and downright shocked when I found that the stem controls for pause and skip track work in YouTube Music on said Surface Pro.
They're just regular Bluetooth headphones. Seems like Apple could market this a bit better.
Edit: On second thought it's probably deliberate to not step on the Beats brand's "territory".

Nah the techs just put them on the charger and tell you to wander the store for an hour or so.
I hear retail came up with this idea to boost sales.

Not only that, they want to make it more of an inconvenience for non-iPhone Airpods owners by forcing them to walk in the Apple Store to update their Airpods and possibly be tempted to get an iPhone. Sneaky and a smart decision, Apple!
Why the ? would you buy Airpods if you do NOT own an Apple device.
I had trouble reading that because the firmware on my light bulb was updating.
I use the Airpods Pro 2 on my Pixel phone. I don't really like iPhone and airpods pro 2 are just unbeatable in ANC... They work great with other devices (but you do lose some apple integration)

Exactly. Also, and hear me out, prompt it through iPhone settings? As long as case and AirPods are 50% or more charged, just tap update. Craziness.
