Firmware update for original Time Capsules please Apple!

Was the original Time Capsule capable of dual band? I doubt it.

Guest Networking is kinda cool but I would be surprised if they release an update just for that...
But maybe they will update it for the MobileMe features...I'm sure they want all the subscribers they can get...

I was just talking about this yesterday if only the AEBS could support dual-band simultaneously, I would be so happy; well looks like my wishes have been fulfilled!

Amazing with all the news today that this is the only with more positive ratings than negative. Sure wish my AirPort Extreme BS had the dual networking capabilities. I have a Netgear setup for my guest network.

Funny with all of the excitement leading up to Today that the real improvements don't happen to Mac Pro, iMac, or long awaited Mac mini but instead AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule.

I should have been more specific. Just an update for the MobileMe file sharing. I wouldn't see as how that would be a hardware specific update.

What? My link is to the new Time Capsule. And either way, your link states the exact same thing I quoted:
"Speed and range will be less if an 802.11a/b/g product joins the network."
Apple's known for having marketing errors (esp. on the website) right after product launches. If you're really concerned about this, wait a week or two and see if it changes.

One of their recent bigger "oops" was when they listed the base-level MacBook as having a "illuminated keyboard". Oops

Hmm… I wonder if there is any way to throttle the speed of the connections on the "guest network". If so then I'm definitely replacing one of my Airport Extremes.

Speed degrades if a a/b/g joins an n network on the same frequency. Hence the dual band. If a/b/g are at 2.4GHz you can run n at 5 GHz and will have no loss in speed.

Hopefully this is it.

Anyone have any idea on whether this will be offered as a firmware/software update on existing TCs?

New AEBS Firmware

Can anyone confirm that the new firmware today will give existing AEBS and Time Casule users some new features. I won't be home for quite some time.

This is only an update to the utility software, so its doubtful, you would need a firmware upgrade to get more functionality on your AEBS/Time Capsule. This is probably just an update to talk to the new firmware. Hopefully something will come out for us soon.

TUAW is confirming that the new 7.4.1 firmware will update the disk sharing on older models.

"Note for existing AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule customers
Existing AirPort Extreme (MA073 and MB053) and Time Capsule (MB276 and MB277) customers can access their AirPort Disk / Time Capsule disk through Mobile Me over the Internet by upgrading to AirPort Utility 5.4.1 and AirPort firmware 7.4.1. Subscription to Mobile Me online services is required for this feature. Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi and Guest Networking features are only available to new AirPort Extreme (MB763) and Time Capsule (MB764 and MB765) customers"

Bam, a firmware update :)

Didn't expect this to be released  And I just bought a Time Capsule from my local Apple Store on Sunday....!!:p Specifically to do exactly what the new one does - use the TC as an N only network and use my old AEBS (fast ethernet) to create a second b/g only network!

I believe you have 30 days to return it, do it! I bought mine from Amazon.com a week ago and it is on the way back already with a new one already ordered.

Too bad the devices are still the dated white plastic.
I was hoping for shiny black plastic or even an aluminum side with shiny black top.

Otherwise very useful update though they should have lowered the price of the TC by at least $50.

i wish Apple would enable AirDisk (or whatever it's called) for older Airport Extreme a/b/g base stations. The old UFO ones.

But it's a good thing I didn't buy the newer Airport Extreme a/b/g/n model at CC for $107 when I had the chance. I was considering setting up a dual-band network with my existing UFO base station. Now I can do it with a single unit! And still have a Airport Express a/b/g WDS remote station without slowing the n part of the network. pretty slick.

Yet still no uPNP....what every other router on the planet supports....till that day comes, no Airport or Time Capsule for me...

Apple would rather pimp Bonjour for zero-config networking devices. Apple supports open standards, but uPNP is *too* open and has a number of issues (like security exploits).

Adding an Express to the new airport extreme

Can someone answer this long-winded question for me then about the new basestation

If i had a new extreme basestation and then used an express to extend the wifi network, will the performance of my 'n' laptop be affected if a b/g laptop connects? Since the express does not have dual band simultaneous bands.

It would on extend the 2.4 Ghz band I think, and as long as all the G devices are on that band it shouldn't be an issue

Will Mobile Me sharing allow remote time machine backups? If we can access our disk, will it start backing up on a regular basis?
