I believe you have 30 days to return it, do it! I bought mine from Amazon.com a week ago and it is on the way back already with a new one already ordered.

I literally bought the 1TB model yesterday on Amazon because the price had dropped to $387. Now I know why.

Debating whether I should cancel the order and get the new one or not. I suppose it's naive to assume the new version will be offered by Amazon at the same price? Also, I'm not sure I would even get any use out of the new features. I do not use MobileMe and was not planning to subscribe any time soon. Don't really care about the guest network stuff, as I will have no attached hard drives and guests are welcome to use my printer. My WiFi devices consist of:

- 802.11n capable MacBook Pro (and a second to be purchased for my wife in the next few months)
- 2 3G iPhones
- Occasionally a Nintendo Wii (which I have been thinking about running a cable to anyway) and a DS.

I guess the iPhones will drag down the network with the first gen Time Capsule...crap. What to do, what to do.

Just quick question relating to Time Capsule.

According to the Apple website you can use it both for back ups (Time Machine) and as an extra storage area for files you don't want cluttering up your laptop's hard drive.

However I've also read several reviews that say that you can't do this and that Time Capsule cannot be partitioned and therefore has to either be used for storage or for Time Machine.

I'm hoping the reviewers are talking rubbish but can anyone here confirm?

I was under the impression that you could have multiple backups AND alternate storage. I sure hope that's the case. I'm wanting to use a 1TB to backup two laptops with ~250gb hard drives and use the remainder for storage.

EDIT: Whew. Subsequent post confirms this is okay. Good.

Where's firmware update 7.4.1 then? Airport Utility, upgraded to 5.4.1 isn't picking up any new updates.....

More waiting!

1) The iPhones, DS, and Wii WILL ALL drag down the network. DS is B, Wii and iPhones are G.

2) You can solve the drag with the old Tim Capsule if you have an old G router around. It is fairly simple to plug your OLD router into the Time Capsule and configure the G router to supply a second G only network that keeps your old stuff off the new N network. Really not hard but now you have 2 routers, more cables, more hassle compared to a new Time Capsule which does it all.

3. You can do multiple Time Machine backups to the internal drive but you can NOT combo space with external HDs plugged into the Time Capsule. If you plug external hard drives into Time Machine they can act as extra storage but only through manual drag and drop type copying. And YES YOU CERTAINLY CAN DO TIME MACHINE BACKUPS TO THE INTERNAL CAPSULE DRIVE **AND** copy other files there with no problems. Time Machine files are kept in a single folder on the HD and you can copy other stuff there like an other drive.

Oh well, I was hoping Apple would update the Time Capsules with 2 or 4 hot-swappable raid drives...

Basically, I want a Mediasmart Server or Drobo but I was hoping Apple would do something to compete with these..
You could connect a Drobo to the USB port of the TC. Not sure if the TM would work on the Drobo then (I think not).

As far as the update goes, I have only seen firmware updates by opening Airport Utility, clicking Manual Setup, then in the status window it will say "Firmware Update Available" or something like that.

The Wii and DS aren't really an issue since they are used so infrequently, and as I said, I will probably hardwire the Wii anyway. But the iPhones are a problem, since they're on the network 24/7. No getting around that.

I had not even considered the idea of hanging on to my current Linksys router and using that to set up a second network for the B/G devices. I guess I will present that to the Mrs. and see if she wants to go economical or elegant. ;)

Anyone know what the new and improved Time Capsules will be going for on Amazon? I can't seem to find them.

That's a relief. I've no intention of attaching an external drive. Getting the 1TB so I don't need it. Hell, I've got infinite amounts of space left on the 250gb drive in my laptop.

Sweet, the dual channel was the one feature missing that prevented me buying the old time capsule. I don't want my N connection slowed by my Wii/iPhone.
Shame there's no 750gb/1.5tb upgrades, the lower would have been perfect for two laptops, one 500Gb, one 250Gb.
Thanks apple, now I'm down another couple hundred...

Can I do this?

Just got on friday a refurbished AEBS. Bad timing, I guess. However, I think I can get the equivalent of a dual band by doing the following. Would someone who actually know what they're doing (unlike me :) ) check my logic.

I have the old Linksys router that the AEBS replaced. It was b/g compatible. If I were to connect the Linksys to the AEBS with an ethernet cord, then I could have b/g devices connect to the Linksys wirelessly, and keep the AEBS for the n devices. Is this correct? That a wired connection won't make the AEBS drop to b/g compatibility mode?

If a device is connected wirelessly to the Linksys, is there a way to mimic the guest networking features of the new AEBS? That is, anything connected to the old Linksys can see the internet only?

Thanks in advance....

Very tempted by the new AirPort Extreme.

Likewise...

I've had a dual setup using AE and old Airport. I'd like to streamline the hardware, maybe get a time capsule but Xbox360 (last time I checked) wouldn't play nice with the new AE. Anybody know if this has been rectified by M$ or :apple:?

I too am wondering how to " Simply register your Time Capsule with your MobileMe account" now ive updated, anyone found out yet?

Has Apple "EVER" updated this much in a single day before?? I wonder what could have possibly been in store for the alleged March 24th event.

I guess March 24, might be reserve for Snow Leopard and new iPhone?

Or maybe even new Apple TV?

I wasn't aware of the 360 having issues with Apple routers. Is this just via WiFi or over Ethernet as well? I have my 360 cabled to a Linksys router currently and wasn't planning to use it with WiFi since I like the solid connection.

my xbox360 works fine with the 802.11n AE... (LAN)

You would have to check your linksys docs. I know (I have done this with multiple routers in the past) bridge networks with routers and sometimes giving them almost a seperate 'subnet' but as far as restricting access that's up to the router that's 'bridged'.

Check to see what the linksys can do, I have a linksys I replaced with a TC and I'm gonna be essentially doing a psuedo dual band for my kids DS's since they can't do WPA2 networks, I have to enable a WEP network and that network only needs internet access. I think on mine I have a restrictions tab that I can change permissions on what's accessible, but again, I have to read the docs.

Yes, I am. I thought mentioning "firmware" and "7.4.1" might have been enough.

I thought that once you run both updates, it'll trigger the firmware update.

I've just updated, but since I'm at the office, can't update my Airport which it's at home. :p

I have an AirPort Extreme base station and the WiFi dongle from Microsoft on my Xbox 360. No problems for me.

When I set-up wireless to AE it wouldn't connect. Internet search led me to the conclusion it wouldn't connect with AE but would connect with Older AE.

I have one 360 set up wirelessly and another by ethernet to an older Airport express that is extending the b/g network of older Airport. They are not hooked up to new AE.

Big question for me: Can I use TC and my Linksys router simultaneously so that I can have my Xbox connect to the Linksys and everything else work through TC? I need to have a wireless 360. Thanks!

Oh man, Apple is trying to empty my bank account.

I truly believe they'll introduce a new AppleTV.

Which makes sense, they've migrated all Intel Chipset to NVidia.

And the new NVidia ION platform would deliver more powerful graphics, then, we'll probably have 1080p without glitches.

And they'll probably give us a glimpse about Snow Leopard, and would probably announce the release by October.

Why October, trust me, it's like Leopard, strategic reason.

I currently have a G/B APExpress extending the 'main' N APExpress with no devices running on N at the moment so it isn't a big deal, but I got a good deal on that N-APE. Anyway, would it theoretically be possible to have each extending the two bands of a new Extreme? The old B/G extending the 2.4 and the N extending the 5 bands?

I wouldn't be surprised if it was possible, but then again wouldn't be surprised if Apple made it not possible. Probably too early to ask, but what are anyones thoughts on that?
