But they do forget that half of the world, still pays a lot for internet, being that not everybody has unlimited downloads. I would love to have a subscription with iCloud, but I'm always afraid of passing the traffic limit I have per month.
Well, you can say the same thing to Microsoft, Adobe, Google, etc. It's not just Apple, everybody is moving to the cloud. It is unfortunate seeing digital gaps created in regions/countries without proper broadband infrastructures.

Apple have stopped refreshing the iMac?

Swear to God I didn't know that. When did that happen?

Glad I got one of those late 2015 iMacs all those months ago.
Sarcasm? i am just disappointed that did not refresh IMac last Month, was planing to buy one

Also, it would be cool if they would add support for the upcoming 802.11ad standard. Back in the day, they were one of the first to do 802.11ac
Apple would do that when they release new Macs with 802.11ad. That's when they released the 802.11ac airports, awhen they released 802.11ac Macs. Same thing with Time Capsule, they released that to when they announced the first Macbook Air.

I love my Time Capsule, it pretty much "just works".

And my old Airport Express too.

Although you pay for it. I don't think I've spent over $80 for a wireless router in the last decade (other than the TC), maybe if I did, I'd love those too.

But I took the plunge because I wanted a seamless Time Machine backup (and needed another router).

No, you don't with the vast majority of ISPs. I own my modem and own a separate router. Time Warner has a list of compatible modems, as do other large providers such as Comcast.

True, but you have to take them whether you like them or not. :(

I have a router connected to my Apple router, and the router from my ISP is in bridge mode. It technically has more features, including 802.11ac, but I just don't like it. Its UI is a mess and it doesn't offer anywhere near the same level of functionality.

Use an Extreme base station, and an Express to send music to my audio system. May pick up one of each before they disappear, just in case Apple really does do away with them. My guess is that they'll actually be replaced with a similar but enhanced product - something more like a home kit hub + wireless router (maybe also + Apple TV).

The 2015 iMacs already have Skylake processors in them and there are no desktop class Kaby lake processors available at the moment, so it wouldn't have made much sense for them to refresh them last month. I'd expect Apple to refresh the iMacs some time in the 1st half of next year once the new chips are available

Funny - I am right now in fact... just opened up windows Airport to check you were wrong.. and you are.

There is an Airport Utility for Windows. Also Windows users generally wouldn't be buying this. On the other hand, I love my Time Capsule and the ability to configure it from my Macs and iPhone app.

Maybe you are not familiar with Airport Utility for Windows:

Interesting. I have found my Netgear Nighthawk performs much better than my Time Capsule. The problem with this survey is that it encompasses the $49 special that you can buy at Wal-Mart, which drags the scores down for others I am sure. The Nighthawk was as expensive as an Airport Extreme, but the range is much better and has not needed a reboot in almost a year now.

My Nighthawk works so much better than my Airport Extreme(current model). Anytime I would try to do some local heavy lifting over wifi my AE would either drop connection or lag enough to make what I was doing useless. Now I can do whatever I want and my Nighthawk never skips a beat and hasn't crashed since I plugged it in 7 months. I've had all of Apple's routers since they started making routers and they worked fine up until the most recent model with AC wireless.

But really profitable.
It is better to sell a subscription than a product that can last for 10 years. And once you put your data on iCloud is even more convenient to have an Apple device, so you stick with their ecosystem.
Sad move for customer, great move for the company

A sad move for customers cannot, by definition, be a good move for a supposedly customer-centric company like Apple. I, for one, will never backup my files in any "cloud" out of security concerns and the fact that law enforcement can subpoena Apple for your data. I also have lost interest in the iCrap ecosystem, which has become inferior in so many ways to competing mobile operating systems.

Keep it up, Apple, and the chickens will eventually come home to roost.

*UGH* I'm on my second Airport. How long will these things be safe to use? I mean if they're not getting security updates, we should move on, I guess...but to what?

The reason I'm using an Airport is they seemed to take security more seriously than the other consumer router makers. Like WPS (which is completely insecure) is turned off by default.

I seriously have no idea what to use now, nor when I should move on to a different router :-(

Huh? I am using it with a windows PC at home, it is an awesome router with a 2 TB HDD on the network that I can backup my files /movies etc manually
You can easily configure it with an iphone/ipad

The point still stands.

Wrong. It will work with the most recent Apple extremes of which I have 2 currently running in my home setup. You should really check your facts before you post definitive statements which are false.

AirPort Utility 6.3.2 or later is required, but not available for Windows.

But you can set it up via iOS. I know many people that don't have Macs, but have iOS devices and use Airport routers.

The point still stands.

Or maybe they're combining a mesh network with Siri to become a competitor to Amazon's Alexa and Google's Home?

When will Apple fans stop "thinking inside the box" of existing products and start giving Apple the benefit of the doubt? Because even when they make great products, people find no end to their complaints.

When will Apple fanboys stop blindly defending Apple by abdicating all control of their brain functions?

This makes me sad. I'm guessing they will force us to use iCloud Storage to back up our files in the future.

Speaking only for myself, no, I will not use iCloud for backup. I may eventually be forced into someone's cloud service, but it won't be iCloud.

That's hard to believe.

You can't even configure it from a Windows PC which makes up 90% of PCs.

AirPort Utility for Windows which hasn't been updated for years and is incompatible with the more recent models.

I think it's probably accurate. Someone buying an Apple router more than likely has at least one Apple device. Whether it be a Mac or an iOS device, they've got the ability to quickly set it up.

The point still stands.

How does your point still stand? You are stating that 90% of the market is PC, not Mac, so therefore Apple Routers shouldn't be as popular as they are. That is a logical fallacy, as I proved that there is a way for PC users to use Apple Routers. So sorry, but your point is logically flawed.

Exactly what I said, but apparently his point still stands. Even though his point can't stand because I (we) proved his point to be flawed.

My AirPort Extreme gives me the best wifi speeds of any router I try. Right now, on my windows pc, I've got 122 down and 15 up, from 2 rooms and a floor away... the next best (before returning it) was closer to 70 down and 5 up.
