no solutions...

Well I'm not going to be much help other than providing my problems which might help others figure the source. I have a MacBook Air running 10.5.6 and I'm traveling around Bangkok using the mainly Truewifi hotspots but sometimes bars and cafes with wifi, Id say 50% of the time I get self Assigned IP address and nothing seems to cure it... Ive tried everything that I've read which is now a lot. Ive given up. I can remember I used to have this problem on my home network maybe 4 years ago and my solution was to connect to the router with via ethernet establish connection then simply remove the cable and go back to airport connection. Unfortunately I cant try that right now. Anyway, good luck all.

Same problem, still no solutions HELP please

I have recently found my self with the same problem as many of the other users here. I connect to the internet three different places. One has wireless and ethernet, depending on the signal I will plug in ethernet and my connection is fine. Second location is at work that has a wireless connection which I never have any issues with. The third location is where all the trouble is. The first couple times I could plug in an ethernet cable and everything was fine, the last two times I tried I got a self assigned IP address and now it cannot connect.

I have restarted router and computer, obtained a new lease and checked my DHCP settings and nothing works. The only change I can think of is I installed an mmo on the system, but it has not conflicted with connections elsewhere. All of my settings are the same as they were a couple days before this happened and I still cannot connect at this third location. Any advice on how to solve this dilemma would be appreciated.

Finally!

I've been struggling with this problem with my iMac for one year (Using Ethernet connection instead). Using Netgear WNR 3500 gigabyte router. Working with other wireless PC connections without difficulty. Using WEP security. Tried multiple different fixes reviewed in this forum and others. Stumbled on suggestion to create new network, and resubmit password for WEP security with a "$" first, before the password. It worked! I'll repost if this fix is temporary. Keeping my fingers crossed! I really wish Apple would seriously address this issue in their support area. It seems to be a rather consistent and systemic problem. Here's the webiste where I found the info: http://hokietux.net/blog/?p=34

For what it's worth, I spent several hours trying various techniques suggested here and elsewhere (resetting PRAM, deleting prefs, changing network settings, etc), but as soon as I tried the "Turn Off Firewall, get a good IP address, Turn On Firewall" sequence, my wife's iBook was back in business.

(Thank goodness my iMac remained connected to the internet via our home network the whole time, so I could keep investigating solutions. Incidentally, the iBook also remained connected to the home network, but with its self-assigned IP address, could not connect to the internet.)

Just another data point to others researching the problem, but for me, a lifesaver. Thanks!

Unable to open some webpages on my mac

Hi,
I need some help regarding this issue.
I am using D-link 624 and I am unable to open some web pages ( google for instance) on my mac. Somebody advised to try DNS flush, tried that but did not help. Please help me out with this issue. It is frustrating as my pc is working fine.
Thankyou

I have just spent two days trying to get to the bottom of the self assigned IP issue. I tried all the various solutions in this thread to no avail, but I did find one post in another forum relating specifically to IP and Linksys.

If you're getting self assigned IP and using a Linksys router the trick is to update the firmware on the router, worked a treat.

I hope this helps, it might also do th job on other routers too.

The Real Solution

ok, i've had variations of this problem for a long time and some of the other solutions offered seem to work temporarily but then really the computer actually just seems, given enough time, to be finding its own partial solution to the problem anyway but not for multiple computers. the faster the clock speed the faster a computer seems to self-heal. Despite this, max of 3 computers could get on at any time. but it is definitely, the 'self-assigned IP address' problem that we've solved here once and for all (well, for us anyway), and I note in this forum over 36,453 views on one thread and 28,095 on this thread and stacks of sites listed for a google search where the problem is spoken about. So its a huge problem. Anyway, we have three macbook pros, one old iMac, one Nintendo DSI, one Nintendo Wii, one PC, two iphones, and occasional visits from my daughters and son who have macbook pros and PC- so lots of things to connect and we couldn't get any more than 3 computers, at random, to work at once till now.
so to the solution- and my wife worked this out. and its so simple you will cry.
open airport utility and it will come up with the wireless devices- select the one you want if there are multiple (you may need to enter the Airport- not wireless- password). Select Base Station>Manual Set-up and then Internet. At the bottom it says 'Connection Sharing': it was set to 'Off (Bridge Mode)' on mine. Change it to 'Share a public IP address' (or 'Distribute a range of IP addresses' also works apparently), click update, it will reboot and voila (hopefully), problemo solved. Now please send money :D
This solution also shows up under Help>Airport Utility Help, search for 'sharing your internet connection' and then select 'sharing your internet connection' from the help topics.

I've been having this problem for months. Sometimes I'll go weeks and everything will be fine and then out of nowhere it gets really bad. Today is the second day in a row where I have been without internet for 2+ hours and then *poof* it's back on. Nothing I try works, it just eventually and randomly comes back.

I've tried everything listed in every thread I've found (firewall, preferences, PRAM, and on, and on...) I have an Intel iMac and an Airport Express. At this point I am certain that it's either an issue in Leopard or a hardware issue because without fail my iPhone and Windows laptop both run fine off of the Airport when the iMac goes down.

Even more troubling is that the issue seems to have worsened. I don't even have a self-assigned IP right now. In fact, I have no connection to the router and my iMac isn't even seeing my Airport (or any of the other 5+ networks I normally see...)

I really love my iMac but this has been one of the most frustrating experiences I've ever had. There's absolutely no rhyme or reason to it. Any suggestions?

got mine to work

I was having the same annoying trouble. I had never had a problem with using networks at home or at other places until I went to a coffee shop tonight, and then it all started. It continued to not work even once I got home and attempted to get on to my own network.

So what I did was I went into network preferences, advanced option for airport. Then I went to TCP/IP settings and set configure IPv4 to off. Then I applied the conditions and exited out of network preferences. Then I went back to network preferences and went back to TCP/IP settings and set configure IPv4 to using DHCP with configure IPv6 off. That worked for me, it assigned me a new IP address and no problems now. :)

Problems connecting as well...

I am also having problems with my AirPort. It automatically connects me to my wireless at home. I have a linksys router and it is not password protected. It does not work, however, at my friend's house. It will automatically connect to the weak-signaled netgear router that must belong to a neighbor, but not to his netgear router. His wireless is password protected, but I am not even prompted for a password when I attempt to manually connect. It simply states that there was an error connecting. I need a quick and reliable connection since I do a lot of school work here. What could the problem be?

I have a MacBook and am running version 10.4.11

This just started happening to me yesterday on a network that worked flawlessly for years.

I have a network with two Airport Expresses. I have a Macbook running 10.5.8 and a Powerbook running 10.4.11. And I get the "Self Assigned IP" problem on both of laptops. I also get the issue on two iPhones. I am going crazy with this.

I suspect that this is a hardware problem since it started on all devices as the same time. My Airport Expresses are both several years old. I did switch which one was the main base station connected to the cable modem, but that did not seem to make a difference.

I am not sure what is going on here, but the fact that this is happening to several devices, with several different OS versions, and started all at once, leads me to believe it is a hardware issue, but I am not convinced of that.

I might pick up a new router and see if I have any luck. If you have any ideas, I'd be glad to hear them. I have tried many of the suggestion here, with no luck.

EDIT: Just to update, I was using WEP as I thought my Tivo needed WEP. I was wrong about that and I have now switched to WPA to see it makes any difference.

Grr... that happend to me!

(I hope this thread is in the right section!)

I just bought a white applemac laptop yesterday and it has all been set up - but the internet won't connect. I have a home network which always worked fine with my microsoft laptop and the AirPort is 'on' - but it says I have a 'self assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet.'
... well, I can't! So... what do I do?

I've tried all the 'assist me' guides on it but it just leads me around in circles - ending with 'this connection error cannot be fixed'.

Please help me as soon as you can!

This might be a problem with the new update. I have seen this problem with another user. My internet connection was working fine until about a couple of weeks ago. When now I realize the update date was done.
What I finally figured out after seeking help and getting no good answers was to:
Change the channel on the router by renewing it.

Mine was originally defaulted on 11 and when I renewed it changed to 3 and aww finally no problems yet and it has been a few days. So I strongly believe that this is the way to resolve your situation.

This is a very annoying problem that's just started happening on my leopard machine.

What you need to do is go into System preferences> Security>firewall then turn it off to "allow all incoming connections".

Then turn your airport off.

Then turn it back on again.

You should now be able to connect to the web.

Then you need to go back and turn your firewall back on (very important!).

Hell knows why this happens but it's yet another crap bug in Leopard....

Literally started happening for no apparent reason after three months.

Ahhh thank you, thank you, THANK you for that! :D Just found this year-and-a-half old post and I guess the bug is still there because it worked! This definitely saved me a few hours of frustration.

Just a note to mention that this problem still exists in Snow Leopard.

I've tried every trick available, with no change. Doing a reinstall now. Dammit.

Too simple

It works!!! On one computer everything was working, on the other no IP. Made the above change and now everything is fine!!!!!... Thank You!

Well, a re-install worked for a day. Now I'm right back to the same old problem.

I guess I'll just tether to my phone until I get a chance to make an appointment at the genius bar.

Or I could re-install the OS every two days. That sounds like fun.

10.5.8

10.5.8 has messed up my wireless connectivity on both the non-apple routers I use outside of home. Connecting to the airport extreme is fine, but at university now i can't connect. All my settings are correct according to the university, however it obtains a self-assigned IP and cannot connect to the internet. Sometimes says its authenticating. Ive done a fresh install of leopard since i first encountered this problem as i installed a new hard drive in the macbook aluminium (late 2008), yet this encountered the exact same problem. This is really frustrating. Windows 7 can connect no worries (which im forced to use at uni). Anyone else had this issue since 10.5.8? Its got nothing to do with the power adapter issue/wireless connectivity that ive been reading about. Snow leopard better fix this or ill be super pissed off

Well, I bought a new router (Airport Extreme Base station and I still have issues). I still get the self assigned IP address on my iPhone and my 10.5.8 laptop. I am going to try a new channel and see if that helps. Very frustrating, especially since I spent a lot of money on the new router, apparently needlessly.

EDIT: I changed the channel of my b/g network and changed the radio mode from automatic to 802.11a/n - 802.11b/g and gave the 5 GHZ network a unique name so my only my Macbook uses that network (only n device I have). Everything seems to be working fine, but it is usually takes a day or so for problems to appear.

password check

I just went through the same hell last week.

Surprisingly, my solution was to double check the password airport was using to hook up to the local network and it turned out I had it wrong, though only by one character, that's why I didn't notice at first.

It all happened after upgrading the MacBook Pro to the newest version of Leopard, that's why the connection needed to be setup all over again.

This may be a rather simple approach to the problem, but I thought it was worth sharing since it worked for me.

Well nothing seems to be working for me. The problem keeps coming back. And it keeps happening on Leopard and my iPhone. I just moved so I don't have my Tiger machine setup yet, so I don't know if that machine still has problems. I am at a loss.

I purchased a new router and tried almost suggestion I found on the web. This problem just will not go away. This is the most frustrating experience I have ever had with Mac OS X. I would even try a re-install of the OS, but I don't think it will help.

Did anyone actually solve this problem? It seems too wide spread for Apple not to know about it. This really seems like a fundamental flaw somewhere in OS X

I have this problem with ethernet, not wireless. I have a time capsule router, and 10.5.8 on my mbp. it doesn't matter what I do the ethernet will eventually get a self assigned IP. I've tried everything, even a clean install, but the problem remains. very, very frustrating.

I hear you. Nothing I have done helps at all. And I have tried everything on the internet. I get the problems every few days regardless. For me to solve the problem, all I have to do is renew my DHCP Lease on my 10.5.8 Macbook and on my iPhone I just need to turn Wifi off and then turn it back on, but it still is awful. I may try a non-Apple router and see if that helps, but I have little hope anymore and may just have to live with it. Which is awful. I could see how this problem would make someone not buy Apple products again. I certainly won't be buying an Apple router again if I can solve this with a non-Apple one.
