Airs in cafes

I once used my corporate-issue Dell in a cafe.

Was I putting on "airs in a cafe"? :). Not really, just IM-ing my kids. 'Cause I missed them and my crummy hotel didn't have wifi.

So whats it with the cafe demographic and Apple products?
If you want broad, sweeping generalizations it's all about disposable income.

That said, the particular coffee shop seems to have some impact as well. Some shops seem to have more Apple oriented clientele while others seem to have people that mostly seem to use Windows laptops. Generalizations like this aren't much use IMO though -- particularly when they're based on such small sample data.

Serious IBM users are at their offices and visiting clients, not sitting in cafes.
Who uses IBM's? Even IBM doesn't make ThinkPads any more.

you cant do any serious work in cafes
"I can't" != "No one can". Don't use "you" where you should be using "I".

Some do "serious work" in cafes. Some do not. Again, broad generalizations are pointless.

Jealous, huh.

Ah, that explains it.

Would that be your imaginary rMBP?

no i am not jealous :) i just dont find it practical to bring a laptop in cafe bar and do some serious work in my case developing :) and for me its way much easier if i wanted to browse some news from cafe bar i would do it with my iPad :)

and speaking of rMBP i am going to order it next week ;) and if you think that black macbook pro is not a good machine well thats your opinion and for me it is a good machine and it had a nice run of 6 years :)

and if any of people feel insulted because of my earlier post i am sorry, as i didnt meant to insult anyone :)

i find people who bring laptops in cafes are just showoffs ( you cant do any serious work in cafes ffs )

maybe i should come with my black macbook to feel unique

or when i buy rMBP 15" to install gentoo and to not have any GUI :p how different is that haha :p

I've studied for every major medical licensing exam in cafes.

Cafeine and coffee helps but you can drink a coffee in your home or office ;) or somewhere where is more quieter than cafe bar places ;)

yes i know that not everyone is a showoff, but in my opinion and i personally i cant do much serious and dedicated work in cafe bar due the crowded people and noise, only thing i could do in cafe bar is to enjoy in my coffee and talk with my friends in person :)

I wasn't talking about the coffee or caffeine (what's the difference btw - is there a substance found in coffee other than caffeine which also boosts alertness?).

You can't do any serious porn watching in cafés either. People use computers for lots of different things. Some can be done in a café, others can't.

I can get a lot of work done in cafes. Often I prefer the lively atmosphere to a dead and quiet office - in particular in the summer when nobody is around at universities.

At least here in Chicago, I see a lot of people working many hours in cafes. Some have business meetings, others just work on their projects (often web/graphics design, but also other stuff). I see student groups meeting there, or just students learning on their own.

That's not the only reason people enjoy coffee. There are much easier ways to ingest caffeine. Several rigorous studies have shown there are many beneficial effects of coffee, in addition to it being very tasty and making you feel more alert :)

Whenever I go to a Starbucks, I take my Surface RT, just so I'm not a hipster.

I like to start my own trends, and go against the crowd. ;)

Why don't you just grab a fork or something and jam it into you hand. Also against the crowd and different, but may be less painful.

The point I was making was reference to studies which have shown the ambient noise of working in a coffee shop is beneficial for creativity. :) Although thats a good point about the other benefits of coffee :)

Less painful than drinking Starbucks? Hmmm, after tasting their coffee's, I'll pick the fork in the hand any day thanks :)

I normally use the iPad here rather than my MBA when out in public, as it's a little more descreet than having people look at Homer eating the apple on the back of the MBA :)

Interesting, which studies are these?

When I go to coffee shops I use my Bose headphones to block out noise/listen to my music. I prefer the more lively environment of a coffee shop to the isolation of my apartment for studying, not the noise.

People who call other people show offs, usually have their own internal psychological plan to one up the show offs, like your plan to get a rMBP 15" to show off your self! How silly.

Define "serious" porn watching. Porn watching can be done in a cafe, I've seen it happen, but I'm not sure how you're defining "serious" as that could entail something else entirely.

I have seen people watch porn in the open, in public, with no shame at all. The y could have gotten into legal trouble, but did it anyway...sometimes you just can't wait

BS. I wrote most of dissertation in cafes. When I was an adjunct, I'd work with students in cafes rather than a crowded, shared office. Students do serious work in cafes all the time, as do business professionals I'm sure. Heck, the library where I went to grad school had a cafe in it. How quiet and isolated does an environment have to be for "serious work" in your eyes? A cubicle? A monastic cell?

I've been making it a habit to work in cafes a few hours of the day to escape the monotony of the office and put myself in a environment that helps bring out the creative vibes.

One thing that I noticed is that Apple products seem to dominate the cafe crowd - seems as if 90% of the laptops are Apple with many being Macbook Air. For tablet users, its hard to see anything but an iPad.

So whats it with the cafe demographic and Apple products? It does not seem to be just young people.

people with disposable income like to overpay for coffee too?

/yes, i'm kidding.
//about the overpriced Apple implication, not so much about the ridiculous coffee prices in those places:p

OT Starbucks question

Hi, I am smiling reading your post. May I ask a question, please? I noticed that people IRL who don't care for Starbucks coffee often deliver a rant about all that is wrong with the brew. Some go on forever. I have always been curious as to what causes that need to vilify a cup of coffee?

When I order food or beverage that is not to my taste I simply don't do it again.

Curious as to what causes such passion about Starbucks?

Thanks

Humans are like that. They can get passionate about anything. Sometimes it's passionate about how good the thing it is and sometimes it's about how bad the thing is. One of the more interesting negative comments I've heard about Starbucks from more than one person is that it tastes like sawdust. (I don't drink coffee, so don't ask me.)

It's not just Starbucks - think about some people and sports teams. Heck, think about the debate of OS X versus Windows or iOS versus Android.

Starbucks isn't just food - it's a dominant brand. Like Apple. Like Microsoft. Like Walmart. Sometimes people who choose not to use a dominant brand have very strong opinions about it.

I think it's more than that. It's also the fact that Starbucks is ubiquitous these days and hugely popular. There will always be people that, for one reason or another, like to distinguish themselves from the crowd by proclaiming themselves above a certain thing.
