I think it's more than that. It's also the fact that Starbucks is ubiquitous these days and hugely popular. There will always be people that, for one reason or another, like to distinguish themselves from the crowd by proclaiming themselves above a certain thing.
There is that as well. As I said it's a human thing.

I noticed that people IRL who don't care for Starbucks coffee often deliver a rant about all that is wrong with the brew. Some go on forever. I have always been curious as to what causes that need to vilify a cup of coffee?

Humans are like that. They can get passionate about anything.

Sometimes people who choose not to use a dominant brand have very strong opinions about it.

If you want to see some passion about coffee, come over to our Espresso enthusiasts thread! Lot's of fantastic discussion about espresso, espresso-based drinks and regular coffee. There is a ton of great advice and tips on brewing, roasting, and selecting coffees as well as the products which prepare them.

The group that participates are all very well mannered and understanding of everyone's preferences. At almost 1000 posts, I don't recall even one argument or fight amongst the group. Its a very nice and civil thread to be a part of.

Hi, I am smiling reading your post. May I ask a question, please? I noticed that people IRL who don't care for Starbucks coffee often deliver a rant about all that is wrong with the brew. Some go on forever. I have always been curious as to what causes that need to vilify a cup of coffee?

When I order food or beverage that is not to my taste I simply don't do it again.

Curious as to what causes such passion about Starbucks?

Thanks

As a certifiably insane, completely around the bend, totally demented coffee freak (see "Espresso Enthusiast" thread mentioned by SandboxGeneral) I feel it is my moral responsibility, indeed my very raison d'être, to warn coffee drinkers to avoid Starbuck's espresso. A foul brew, indeed.

Also, because it's fun to dump on Starbuck's!:p :D

I guess that's what happens when you just talk about it instead of drinking it. ;)

Are you talking about the Surface Pro? Because that has a battery life comparable to the 2012 11" Air. The Surface RT is more like the iPad, and gets somewhere around 8+ hours of runtime.

Under heavy loads 3-4 hours max of your lucky. Light loads(surfing the net)6+ hours. Can't speak on the 2012 air, but my wife is going to enjoy her 12 hour plus 2013 air(normal usage)

It's not the brand, but the taste. My son loves a couple of the Starbucks coffee's, and I have tried maybe 30 or 40 cups of different types and none were nice at all. I can drink most coffee's from a thick Turkish coffee to soy based, and even instant coffee's but there was a taste about the Starbucks ones that I did not like.

I just wont go back and have a coffee there, no big deal, and since there is not one close to here it's not a problem for me. The one we regularly go near has a Gloria Jean's 4 or 5 doors away and I do like their cappuccino's and short black's a lot :)

Oh and both of them have free WiFi for customers so that is a plus for keeping data use down on the iPhone, iPad, and those with Laptop's

Thanks for your insights.

Hi david, thank you for your response to my way OT Starbucks question. Not buying something that does not appeal to you makes total sense to me. That I understand completely.

Bear, you attributed this to human nature. That encompasses an endless array of behaviors that can be difficult to understand. You mentioned Apple products generating passion along it other products. I did not mention Apple stuff intentionally in my post but I have noticed it since we bought our first Mac.

It was one of the old Performa series Macs. At that time Gil Amelio was CEO, Power Computing was selling clones, Mac users were considered to be tin foil hat wearing weirdos and the company was expected to go belly up.

Still with Apple's difficult position at that time our friends teased us unmercifully about out computer choice. We liked the Mac so we got one. Just that simple. Folks cracked hard on us.

Later on as Apple's fortunes improved there was obvious envy particularly since we purchased a few shares in a show of support when things were looking dim. Lots of envy when the price of AAPL went way up. Those folks feel better now but are unhappy about the dividend. Oh well.

Human behavior may very well be the answer.

NewbieCanada, you mentioned dominant brand. Could very well be. You also mentioned MS and Walmart. Walmart makes me crazy. I was there this evening. I needed tin snips. The abject stupidity in that store is what gets to me. People working in the hardware and tools department were oblivious about tin snips. They had me spell it and explain the use of the tool! On balance I was glad to be there. Walmart was open when my local hardware is not. My local hardware gives excellent service and advice.

Stupidity is my only issue with Walmart. I am OK with people who love to shop there. Their choice of where to spend money.

Amplelink, if I understood your post it could be the desire not to follow the crowd. that one makes sense too.

Shrink, your posts are always interesting. The cartoon cracked me up. I am indeed a coffee drinker. I'm gong thru an adjustment period as Caribou is closing all the stores in my state. The last one in a reasonable driving distance closed last Sunday. I bought my morning beans there. Gotta find them online.

SandboxGeneral, thanks for the link to the coffee thread. I hope to read that tonight.

Confession, I did stop at Starbucks just before driving home tonight. I had my coffee at Panera. Needed a sandwich and some joe after the Walmart/tin snips errand :)

I didn't buy anything at Starbucks today. I had my drink from Panera and used the WiFi for a few. Panera closes early on Sunday here.

I did look to see who was using what device. There was one Dell and another non Apple product. The rest were Macs and iPads. I do see mostly Macs at Starbucks. We have an excellent Apple store close by. Team in that store is very accommodating and helpful. There are two other Apple Stores about 30 miles away from it in either direction. That may explain the Mac dominance in my immediate area.

Thanks again for all the posts. Very interesting and much appreciated.

i find people who bring laptops in cafes are just showoffs ( you cant do any serious work in cafes ffs )

I spent almost my entire last year working out of cafes as a remote software dev.

I'll admit, most of the people I see aren't doing serious work. I tend to do a few hours of billable work, go to the gym, then go some other cafe and do a few.

Want to see an alternate universe?
Go to a Starbucks in Bellevue or Redmond Washington.

Whenever I go to a Starbucks, I take my Surface RT, just so I'm not a hipster.

I like to start my own trends, and go against the crowd. ;)

Well, you don't have to worry about too many people copying you there...

Depends on where you live. When I was on the East coast it varied by the day. Some days there would be way more Macs. Other days it was usually even. When I moved to San Francisco it was always almost exclusively Macs. In Denver I see very few people with computers in Starbucks. Most of them are talking to other people.

Agreed; that is a lovely, informative, fun, thread, if a little obsessively deranged at times (and I'm writing as in the fond recognition that I am one of those who most certainly could be classed as occasionally suffering from this condition).

I actually like the idea of Starbuck's, or, rather, that is, Starbuck's the concept of the coffee shop (not the reality of Starbuck's the cannibalising chain) - that attractive ambience that the cafés try to create; I love this civilised concept of deep armchairs, dark wooden floors, comfortable surroundings, attractive lighting, high ceilings, and the sort of proper service and equipment that a good café have.

However, as a coffee lover, I have to say that the coffee really is rather dreadful. I avoid it - it really does not merit the name of real, proper, coffee.

Who said anything about not drinking it? It is a well enjoyed and consumed beverage. :)

We make it...we drink it....we love it...

Yes, we do.

On the thread topic, I have to say, over the past few years, ever since I got into the habit of using wifi in airports, I love using coffee shops for work. It is not a daily occurrence, but, if I have to attend a meeting, or give a presentation, and prepare material, or papers, or write reports, and I am moving between one urban centre and another, there is no better place, in my view, than finding a good, capacious, coffee shop, the sort with black-and-white tiles, or dark, wooden floors, comfortable armchairs or booths, accessible tables, excellent coffee and snacks, good service, cleanliness, professional properly trained staff, wifi, a mixed crowd, suits and students both, along with shoppers, and the low hum of thoughtful conversation in the background. I have done some serious writing of briefings and papers in such settings, and I love it. (And yes, I have a MBA, and have had one since 2010, which has travelled the world with me).

Shrink and SBG: In my present location, one of my colleagues told of his coffee, but what he meant also was his relationship with his wife. She buys beans, carefully selected after much Skyping discussion between them, roasts the coffee weekly, next grinds it (yes, they have the proper paraphernalia) and then proceeds to ship it to where we are. I informed him that this is a definition of true love. He sighed happily and agreed with me. To say that I was envious would be a serious understatement.......

Great and beautifully written post; I have taken the liberty of quoting it in full because I think it is the sort of thoughtfully composed and elegant post that enhances the forums.

When I go to Starbucks, I lay out all my Apple devices on the table to increase my odds of getting laid.

We don't have a starbucks near us (yes, there is a corner of Britain without one!) but our local Costa has almost all windows laptops. My work win laptop is like a brick, I personally prefer to leave it on the desk at home or the office.

I find it handy in the odd occaision to be able to take my air & log into our work network via Citrix to keep an eye on my email for an hour or so. I spend long periods of my day on the phone and there would be a perception that I was skiving if the other people on the call could hear the general background noise!
