Apple introduced AirTags in 2021, and over the last several years, the item tracker has been growing in popularity. Rumors suggest that Apple has a new version of the AirTag in the works, and while we don't know a lot just yet, a new model is said to be coming sometime in 2025.

This guide highlights everything that we know about the AirTag 2 so far, and we'll be added to it as new rumors surface.

Design

There are no rumors of an AirTag redesign at this point, and Apple will likely keep the same general shape. There have been complaints about how easy it is to access the battery, which some worry could be a danger to children, so Apple could potentially change the way the AirTag opens.

The AirTag has a replaceable CR2032 battery, and Apple doesn't plan to transition to a built-in rechargeable battery. The AirTag 2 is likely to continue to use a CR2032 battery.

As an anti-stalking measure, Apple could make the speaker in the AirTag more difficult to remove. That would prevent would-be stalkers from removing the speaker to prevent the AirTag from making a sound.

Vision Pro Integration

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the AirTag will integrate with the Vision Pro headset as part of a spatial computing ecosystem, but he did not provide specifics on just what that means.

It's possible the Ultra Wideband chip in the AirTags could be used for relaying positional information to the Vision Pro in some capacity, or there could be some kind of VR item tracking interface.

Upgraded Ultra Wideband Chip

The next-generation AirTag will have a much longer tracking range thanks to the inclusion of a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. The updated Ultra Wideband chip was introduced in the iPhone 15 models and it has three times the range as the original Ultra Wideband chip.

Launch Date

A new AirTag is coming in 2025, and it could launch in September alongside new iPhone models.

There's only a few things that can change… form factor, charging, or manufacturing.

Could make one smaller / thinner / wallet-y
Could make them with charging using the watch charger and recharging batteries
Could make them more waterproof or less "amendable", or colours, or improve range/transmission

I think they are going to have a very hard time improving these given the standards and power requirements. I'm personally expecting that they don't change the original, but offer a few more choices like a wallet option, or some sort of car option. Would be interesting if they can charge via motion, like some watches do - think bicycle; enough movement by simply riding. They could also offer NFC type of scenario where there is no battery, but I'm not sure it's in a usable state for tracking - just too much transmission power needed.

But they're pretty boxed in because of how good it is, and the size of a battery needed to run it.

I have an AirTag. The battery was running low so I replaced it. Still doesn’t work. Looked online and it said sometimes the bitter coating on batteries stop it so I followed the instructions to remove it and it still didn’t work. I like Apple products but this one … not so much!

Vision integration via UW makes sense — great way of locking virtual objects to a physical location.

The blending of the interwebs and the physical world continues apace…

You have to buy the battery that doesn't have the "child safe" coating on it. Scraping a viewing l coating off isn't reliable.
